When attempting refilling new soap dispenser, the head comes out, but the pump assembly stays in base and I can not reach it to pull it out. How do I refill when the pump assembly does not come out with the head?
I have not had that happen. The tube comes out with the pump head. Maybe it detached and if you go underneath and take the bottle out you can retrieve it?

Do you refill soap on top of counter or bottom by screwing off bottle?
It fills from top. You pull pump out of base and pour soap in the hole.

K-1893-C-VS and all other Kohler soap/lotion dispensers are designed to be filled from above the countertop. Gently pull the head and pump assembly up from the base and then pour the soap or lotion into the top of the base. Thank you for choosing Kohler.
I fill mine from the top with a funnel. You could do it from the bottom,but in my case, it's too inconvenient...much easier from the top.
Pull the pump off and refill directly (no need to unscrew, just pull it up). Try not to overfill as the pump assembly takes some space and will cause it to overflow. Do NOT try to remove the bottle from below as it can get quite messy.
You can refill it on the top.
