Product Details

Kellogg Garden Organics Topper Soil for Lawns, Sod & Seed is the perfect soil mix and top-dressing to revitalize, repair or over-seed for a greener, thicker lawn. It's the perfect soil amendment with a natural & organic starter fertilizer for your new lawn and helps with moisture retention, helping water penetrate deep into the soil, encouraging deep root growth to promote a healthy lawn. HOW TO USE: As a Top-Dressing - Spread seed over existing lawn or bare patches and cover with 1/8 in. - 1/4 in. Topper and thoroughly water-in. Keep moist until seeds germinate. HOW TO USE: As a Soil Amendment - Mix a 2 in. layer of Topper with native soil 4 in. -6 in. deep into the soil. Lay sod or spread seed. Cover seed with an additional 1/4 in. layer of Topper. Keep new seeds moist until seeds germinate.
  • It looks different. Aged wood fines create pockets in the soil to allow air and water penetrate deeper into the soil for greater root development and overall lawn health.
  • Enriched with natural and organic starter fertilizer to help seeds germinate fast.
  • Adds organic matter to the soil for better water retention and reduced soil compaction.
  • Revitalize tired lawns - organically! Spread 1/8" over existing lawn and thoroughly water-in.

Q:Does this contain compost
by|Aug 25, 2022

Answer This Question

A:  The ingredients in Topper Lawn Soil are aged wood fines, composted dairy manure, dehydrated poultry manure and feather meal. The wood fines are a composted base material and the other ingredients are added to it.

    A:  Yes it does.

A:  It's been a while since I used this product but I do have a clear recollection of one characteristic. I wasn't happy with it's consistency. It may have been partially composted but had far too much non-decomposed wood/bark for a lawn top dressing.

A:  I was able to get plenty of bags of Topper since I had ordered online just to make sure the specific store had enough.

Q:Is it normal that your product includes sticks and rocks (small) in this lawn soil? I bought this product a couple of years ago and it worked almost...had good growth in the area where my lawn needed a boost, and used it last year without result.

A:  I have used this product several times in the past couple of months and it seems to be working. I am pleased with the results.

          by|Apr 1, 2022

A:  We use aged wood fines in all of our soil mixes. Small sticks and rocks do occasionally find their way through the screen and into the mix however, it is not the norm. We will have someone contact you to get additional information.

          by|Oct 9, 2021

A:  It does have some very small sticks, did not notice any rocks. I tilled it up with my existing soil and I was great for laying sod.

A:  All the ingredients for All Natural Topper Lawn Soil are natural and organic - no chemicals. However, it may cause your pet to have an upset stomach since it is not a food product. Please contact us directly at KelloggGarden.com if you have any further questions.

A:  It should not be harmful since its organic soil. Unlike some other sellers, what I have seen is just pure soil. One Suggestion - Make it drink plenty of water which can be helpful.

                Rocks in top soil
After throwing down ten bags and running the sprinklers I noticed a ton of rocks. Not just tiny pebbles but big rocks that will be projectiles for sure. Be careful with this stuff. I have gone over half the yard so far and this is what I have collected.

                  Is it mulch or soil?!
I bought 14 bags of this and it’s basically mulch and not much soil at all. Very disappointed and now my lawn is filled with wood chips/mulch…

The use of aged wood fines is more common in organic soil mixes than conventional synthetic soil mixes. It mimics the natural and organic activity that occurs on the forest floor. For nearly 100 years, we have used fully composted aged wood fines in our soil mixes for three reasons – Better soil structure with its slightly larger particle size helps air and water penetrate deeper into the soil, allowing for better root development and overall plant health – Excellent food source for beneficial soil microbes which help plants resist pests and disease – A more sustainable resource benefiting the environment. No doubt, it does look different than conventional synthetic peat-based soil mixes. KelloggGardenProducts

It seemed like they took more time to let this product break down before packaging it. Which made it easier to work with. No big chunks. Fit into my small plant planter.

Great for planting St. Augustine sod
I used this to cover where the edges of my St. Augustine sod met to keep them moist. Never saw this done but figured it would work well. Boy, was I right! The sod caught on so well and grew together beautifully. I will always use this method in the future.

                      CONTAINS SHREDDED PLASTIC
I bought this tonight at my local home depot. They removed my first remove today only after an hour of it being up and I imagine it's because they're getting called out for this issue. Upon opening the bag, I got out about a shovel sized amount, only to immediately start noticing things that didn't belong. Naturally, I start sifting through to discover it was SHREDDED PLASTIC. I found a LOT of shredded plastic bags, along with a wad of rope, cut up plastic black flower pots and even found a cigar tip!! What about this is organic???? This is horrible for the environment and quite honestly, false advertisement. Providing pictures to just show SOME of the plastic or in their words "organic" materials I found in this bag.

                        Weed grower
I used this product to reseed part of my lawn damaged over the winter. It is a poor substitute for top soil; it had lots of bark mulch in it and lots of crab grass seed, which i not have to eliminate and probably reseed again. Would not buy this again.

Thank you for your feedback. Potential weed seeds, pests and pathogens typically cannot survive the composting process where temperatures exceed 131 degrees from several weeks. We will have someone contact you to get additional information. KelloggGardenProducts

I gave this one star because it did fill the hole in my lawn. Now I have a bunch of mushrooms growing there instead of grass.

Mushrooms are typically a sign of too much moisture. They thrive in damp organic material. Reduce watering and the mushrooms should disappear. KelloggGardenProducts
