Kellogg Garden Organics Topper Soil for Lawns, Sod & Seed is the perfect soil mix and top-dressing to revitalize, repair or over-seed for a greener, thicker lawn. It's the perfect soil amendment with a natural & organic starter fertilizer for your new lawn and helps with moisture retention, helping water penetrate deep into the soil, encouraging deep root growth to promote a healthy lawn. HOW TO USE: As a Top-Dressing - Spread seed over existing lawn or bare patches and cover with 1/8 in. - 1/4 in. Topper and thoroughly water-in. Keep moist until seeds germinate. HOW TO USE: As a Soil Amendment - Mix a 2 in. layer of Topper with native soil 4 in.-6 in. deep into the soil. Lay sod or spread seed. Cover seed with an additional 1/4 in. layer of Topper. Keep new seeds moist until seeds germinate.
  • It looks different. Aged wood fines create pockets in the soil to allow air and water penetrate deeper into the soil for greater root development and overall lawn health.
  • Revitalize tired lawns - organically! Spread 1/8 in. over existing lawn and thoroughly water-in
  • Adds organic matter to the soil for better water retention and reduced soil compaction.

      Answer This Question

A:  Topper Lawn Soil is not formulated to be used as a stand-alone container soil mix. You can mix 50:50 with a potting mix like Patio Plus Outdoor Potting Mix in a large pot or container which will work well.

      by|Apr 11, 2022

        A:  Yes you can.

A:  If the uneven areas in your lawn are 2-3 inches deep, Kellogg Garden Organics Topper Soil for Lawns will work fine. You can over-seed right in the soil mix. If the patches are deeper, we recommend using a standard top soil to fill in the holes, spread Topper across the top and over-seed.

Thank you for your feedback. The composting process which heats the soil to over 131 degrees for several weeks would kill any pests in the soil prior to mixing and bagging. We will have someone contact you to learn more about your experience. KelloggGardenProducts

Helped grow a lush green lawn
This topper was the foundation to seeding my backyard. I went from seeds to a lush green lawn in a very short period. I believe this topper was vital in helping the grass grow well. I had no issues with any of the bags I purchased.

                        Filled with trash!
Years ago I read a story about how Kellogg sources some of their material which has trash in it. After reading such positive reviews here and on other sites, I dismissed it as sour grapes against a well respected company. After using the product, I now believe the story completely. I purchased 80 bags from Home Depot on separate days from different lots. Both purchases were filled with trash: plastic, styrofoam, rocks, sticks and even glass! How they market this as a topper for grass where kids play barefoot is beyond me. How it is certified organic when filled with plastic is just as curious. Avoid at all costs! *photos are just a small sample of what I picked off the top layer of soil in less than 5 minutes.

I’ve been using this product for years and whether you’re doing this for a new lawn or receding or just want your lawn to be green this is the product to use with a spreader. Are used approximately 23 bags for 3500 ft.² of lawn. I live up in the high desert in the ground and soil are really poor doing this every couple years builds up a nice layer for your grass. It also helps retain moisture. Within three days my grass started turning bright green after the winter browning. The product seemed that he had a little more of larger larger pieces in it this time. I have to modify my spreader and make larger holes.

                          Mostly saw dust
According to the Kellogg website, these are the ingredients of Topper: Processed Forest Products, Recycled Forest Products, Arbor Fines, Peat Humus, Sphagnum Peat Moss or Compost), Composted Poultry Manure and Organic Fertilizer. Where's the dirt? Lots of sawdust clumps included. Get ready for either weeds or strange grass after you put this down.

Used this product to amend clay soil and seed a new lawn. Pros: - Fine material, no big chunks or much mulch, nice dark color - Holds water well and is easy to level for a new lawn - Cost is not that high for the quantity you get so you can cover a large area without bulk ordering Cons: - Fertilizer will only last for a couple weeks - Lots of fine woody material that will deprive nitrogen from the soil Used this product in most of my yard (1500 sq ft) to amend clay soil and seed a new lawn. Worked well to level the soil when prepping for seeding and gave the new grass a quick growth boost. Unfortunately after about a month the lawn started to struggle. Additional fertilizer helped a bit but it now requires constant amendments with fertilizer/compost to maintain a dense green lawn. Good product if you're looking to break up some heavy soil. Wouldn't recommend as a base for a new lawn nor for topdressing.

Thank you for your feedback. Just like an organic garden, adding organic matter to your lawn is a multi-season project to get beneficial soil microbial activity balanced so your lawn is thriving on it's own. It typically takes 3-4 seasons to reach this balance. The wood fines in the formulation are fully composted and will not create nitrogen draft. Adding organic material is one of the best things we can do for our lawns and gardens. However, it does require some patience - but the end-result is worth it! KelloggGardenProducts

                              Horrible weedy soil
We choose to go ahead with Topper instead of Scotts to support a local firm and a promise of chemical free soil and thus bought around 12 bags of these 2 weeks ago for our new lawn. We hand seeded and after 2 weeks there are hundred/thousands of weedlings including dandelion, clover and ragweed every where. The picture below is after we spent 5 hrs hand picking these weeds. Still lot more to go :( . We can't get rid of ragweed due to fear of disturbing nascent grass and they are currently very small (but there are hundreds of them). May be we were unlucky to get a bad batch of the product but I had a super bad experience with the product. We are currently deliberating if we need a do-over.

Weeds are the gardeners bane. All Kellogg Garden Organics soils reach temperatures of over 131 degrees for several weeks in the composting process that will kill any weed seeds. Under the right circumstances, weeds that were once dormant, can sprout.
