Q:Will grass seed grow in this, meaning can I put this down as a top soil and plant grass seed in it?

    Answer This Question

A:  Hello Wstt. Thank you for shopping the Home Depot. The Kellogg 2 cu. ft. Topper Lawn Soil would be an excellent choice for using seed with your new lawn. Use about a one-inch-thick base before you add your seed. After applying the seed, cover it with between an 1/8” to no more than ¼ of the topper over the new seed to keep the seed moist and to prevent the birds from feeding on your new seed. Rick_HD_ OC

Q:Can you use it in vegetable garden or is it toxic
      by|Oct 1, 2023
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  There are no toxic chemicals in any Kellogg Garden Organics soil mixes. Topper can be used in a vegetable garden, mixing 50:50 with the native soil in your garden. Amend Garden Soil, with it's larger particles size to help create pockets in the soil, would be our recommended soil mix for your garden.

        pH = 5.2
Buyer beware of the pH of about 5 on this product which is not ideal for Fescue lawns.

          Bad Purchse
I picked up a few bags from my my local home depot. The plan was to use this before and after I seed my dead yard with new grass seeds. I did it and started watering the yard twice a day. Bunch of weeds came out even before the grass did. Now my yard is full of weeds and all my work is turned into waste.

All Kellogg Garden Organics soils are composted to over 131 degrees for several weeks. This composting process kills any pests, pathogens or weed seeds that might be in the soil. However, a number of factors can trigger weed seed germination, including temperature, moisture, oxygen and light. Tillage is one of the most common triggers. It exposes buried seeds to warming sunlight and aerates the soil. Weed seeds can be buried for years and not germinate and then, exposed to the right environment, they seem to be everywhere.
Weed seeds can also travel – through container-grown plants; earthworms are known to collect weed seeds and move them into their burrows. Weed seeds are always prevalent in the wind throughout the warmer months. KelloggGardenProducts

How much glass in product is acceptable to you?
Bought 6 bags and now have the kids searching for glass in the lawn. Found a bunch of glass, sharp plastics, and other things in soil. The attached picture is just the amount of stuff we found on day 2.

Thank you for your feedback. The composting process which heats the soil to over 131 degrees for several weeks would kill any pests in the soil prior to mixing and bagging. We will have someone contact you to learn more about your experience. KelloggGardenProducts

Helped grow a lush green lawn
This topper was the foundation to seeding my backyard. I went from seeds to a lush green lawn in a very short period. I believe this topper was vital in helping the grass grow well. I had no issues with any of the bags I purchased.

                      Filled with trash!
Years ago I read a story about how Kellogg sources some of their material which has trash in it. After reading such positive reviews here and on other sites, I dismissed it as sour grapes against a well respected company. After using the product, I now believe the story completely. I purchased 80 bags from Home Depot on separate days from different lots. Both purchases were filled with trash: plastic, styrofoam, rocks, sticks and even glass! How they market this as a topper for grass where kids play barefoot is beyond me. How it is certified organic when filled with plastic is just as curious. Avoid at all costs! *photos are just a small sample of what I picked off the top layer of soil in less than 5 minutes.
