Do I need to use a roller after laying down the top soil for my sod?

Do I need to use a roller after laying down the top soil for my sod?
Asked by: Jack
Not only do you want to rototill in the topper with at least 4 inches of the native soil but then spend a large amount of time smoothing out and grading the ground prior to your Sod arrival moistening it from time to time to make sure that any sprinkler trenches and other holes don’t cave-in on you and give you a problem later with your beautiful new sod

Can I use this as fertilizer and apply it after I put the seeds?

I'm just learning how to plant grass
Asked by: Pedro
There is no fertilizer in this product. Do put on top of the seed, but not more than 1/2”.

The soil was still hot out of the bag and cooked my lawn. How can i fix this?

Asked by: Rooster
Please contact us at info@kellogggarden.com so we can get details regarding your application. Organic soils can be "re-activated," creating the composting process by heating up again. However, the soil must be in a pile - depending on the space and environment, at least 12"-24" tall to "re-heat." Topper should be applied to a lawn for over-seeding at a depth no more than 1/4"-1/2" per the directions on the back panel of the bag. Contact us at the email address above and we'll see if we can figure out what's going on with your lawn.

2 cu. ft. Topper Lawn Soil for Seed and Sod is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 89.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Bulk Topper - Used In Conjunction With Others I would recommend this product if used in conjunction with other toppers. This is a great bulk purchase and should be used to fill in the gaps or hit targeted spots for over-topping. I have bought this product from time to time over the years. Sometimes you get a really great batch that is nearly all soil. Other times you get some dryer that looks like clay dust. I think that is just the way it is processed and packaged. I will say I got more good soil than dry soil, but it is worth noting that it does happen. I especially like this topper as filler in the garden. You get twice as much as other name brands for the price. So in that regards and if used properly, works for me!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the "Big Name Brands" I used this as an amendment for the native soil, which has a high alkaline base. Seeded lawn area, and within days, had grass popping up. Was able to grow a beautiful lawn in the 105 degree heat using this product. Also works great as a topper when you want to get a jump start on the spring growing season! Highly recommend for first time lawn artists

I laid Kellogg’s Top Soil to reseed the grass in my small yard that was dog urine burned. I was pleased to find dry (too often competitors’ stuff is wet and impossible to lay down), small-ground, woody, composty material (no rocks or other foreign objects) that went down easily. I put the grass seed on top. Others suggested blending the seed and “soil” but I don’t have anything big enough to mix it. It’s been down less than a week. It has been easy to keep wet (bountiful spring rain helped with the watering). No grass yet, but is expect it soon. Very pleased with this product. I will continue to buy this top soil and other Kellogg products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Over the last few months I must have used about 30 bags of this soil to attempt to recover my dying lawn in Southern California. I have used it with grass seed as well as Sod. Grass seed germinates in about 7 days and grows very fast. Put this down, and cover with sod and the sod grows dark green and thick. Works great. Recently I have just been dumping this soil over some of areas of my lawn that are half alive (fescue), raking it out to thinly cover an area and watering. The grass immediately begins to take off and turns dark green within 7 days. Much more than the adjacent area that is also watered and does not have this soil on it. Sometimes (1 out of 10) the grass will turn yellow in 3 days making me think it is going to burn- but then it recovers and turns dark green and grows rapidly. Perhaps some bags have more fertilizer than others which causes this temporary yellow response? Just my guess. Anyway, I wish they had larger bags and that this was cheaper. Smells bad (meaning good to a farmer) for about 5 days after application.

I put this on top of my dry lawn last year and it went from being dry and rough to the greenest, softest grass. I will be using it every year. I highly recommend using this if you want to revive your lawn.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Topper! It is good feed for your lawn. Lay a thin layer and rake it in once a year. Water and your grass is good to go. Not bad for the price compared to the other stuff out there. Some mixes have mushroom spores so white mushrooms may pop up on your lawn. I got about 12 or so mushrooms and picked them out slowly so no spores spread. They looked good enough to eat but...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best I've found in years! No big huge organics. Nice fine compost material soil. In 12 bags I found 1 little piece of aluminum. Way way better then ANY big name brands I tried in last few years. Very pleased!

Not really a "Lawn Topper" as defined as a topping for established lawns. More of a new lawn topping mix. Works well for new lawn planting. To top established lawns, the product needs a far higher ratio of sand. Seems such a product is very difficult to find in the States. So, make your own with items available at Home Depot. The ratio is as follows: 2 bags of "Top Soil"...any brand works fine 1 bag of "play sand" 4 shovels of peat moss. Mix in a wheelbarrow and spread with the back of a garden rake. To do it correctly, mow lawn down to just above shaving in late October. Rent a plugger and plug the lawn (aerate). Rake all the plugs and dispose. Spread the top mixture and pull it across the lawn with the back of a rake. Yes, it will take a lot of bags of soil and sand... about 35 bags of soil for a 3000 sqft lawn and 17 bags of play sand . Yes, it is a lot of work, but the results are amazing. FYI, in the UK, it's common for the mixture to be 70% sand, so adjust as necessary depending on your soil content and the number of mounds/depressions in you lawn. To truly experience a stunning, solid flat lawn, plan on doing this three years on the trot. The result is worth the effort.
