Is the center support adjustable? I am installing the brackets on a trim but the center support will need to be a bit more set back

Do you recommend to use this rod in a child?s closet to hang clothes?
No. I don't think it would be strong enough for many clothes. You could make a similar rod out of galvanized pipe fittings that are available that would be stronger.
