Users are further shielded from late night battery chirps by the unit's Ambient Light Sensing feature, which establishes a day?/?night cycle and prevents alarm chirping in dark conditions.

Q:what do you mean by harness. Is is the plastic piece with three prongs that clip into the house wiring?

      Answer This Question

A:  Hello from Kidde. Yes, the plastic piece and 3 prongs (which is a plug) have 3 wires that are black, white and red coming out of it. This accessory to the alarm is what we call the "wiring harness" and is used when hardwiring smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

A:  I purchased these years ago, so my memory may be weak on this. But the harness, or wiring harness, is the wiring that attaches the house wiring to the smoke detector. The red and black wires (I think these were the colors) attach to the two wires (common and hot, respectively) from your house current (make sure that you turn the circuit breaker off first) and the green wire attaches to the ground connection (the metal box is grounded). Then the three prong plug attaches to the smoke detector. Then tuck the wires into the box and attach the smoke detector to the mounting ring (it twists on). I think I have this right, as it has been a few years. I installed four of these to replace the old expired ones, so the wiring was already installed from the old units.

Q:I am replacing all up smoke alarms in the source with the 10 year Kiddle. P{lease explain the three stripped wires. Do I need to use both of the plugs?
          by|May 16, 2022

          Answer This Question

A:  Hello. By both of the plugs, I assume you mean the wiring harness plug with three tinned stripped wires that comes in the package that gets wired up in the ceiling to the 3 wire circuit of your house and the second plug on the alarm itself that plugs into the wiring harness. If so, then the answer is yes. The wiring harness does need to be wired into AC power into a 3 wire circuit if you are interconnecting the alarms or on a two wire circuit if you are just using the alarm as a single station alarm that doesn't communicate with other alarms. The alarm itself needs to be plugged into the wiring harness plug and get AC power. This is an AC powered alarm. If this alarm comes with a wiring harness and two adaptors then this would be a different model then this alarm. The adaptors we have are to adapt certain older FireX and First Alert/BRK wiring harnesses for use with Kidde alarms. You don't have to use these adaptors and can just use the wiring harness that comes with the alarm. For further information or if I have these assumptions wrong, please call us at 1-800-880-6788. Please have pictures of both plugs you are talking about ready to email to us.

            Worst detectors ever
I bought 10 of these to replace the 10 yr old detectors I had. These dectors go off at all hours of the night, and because they are in series, all 10 are alarming. When you try to silence the unit, it tells you there’s too much smoke. I have had these detectors for 14 months, and have done everything possible to stop the false alarms, but nothing works. kidde was no help, Don’t waste your money on these detectors, they will drive you insane and go off at all hours of the day and night

Hello. If you have interconnected alarms, the first step is finding the initiating unit, as that is the key. Once you know where the issue is happening, it is usually easy to figure out what is causing the alarms to go off. To find the initiating unit, look for one that is flashing RED or GREEN at least once every second while in alarm mode, then follow the reset procedure on that unit. If the alarm stopped on its own before you could find that flashing light, the initiating unit will flash for 1.5 seconds every 10 seconds. If there are no obvious signs of a fire, the alarm should be cleaned before being reinstalled.False alarms are most commonly caused by something interfering with the sensor. To clean, hold the unit by its edge and thoroughly blow through the gap on the side of the unit with compressed air (like keyboard cleaner). We recommend cleaning out all of your smoke alarms at least every 6 months to a year and at this point we would recommend cleaning out all of your other alarms as well as a preventative.

Some of your alarms may be in one the locations to avoid listed in the owner's manual. This would especially include alarms being installed within 3 ft (.9m) of a forced air supply ducts used for heating or cooling, ceiling or whole house ventilating fans, or other high air flow areas. We recommend that alarms not be installed near vents, flues, chimneys, or fans. We recommend that alarms not be installed near doors or windows near areas directly exposed to the weather. We strongly recommend not to install these alarms in garages, attics, and crawl spaces as you will get temperatures, dust, insects, and chemicals that can cause nuisance alarms.

Try cleaning out the alarms. If you have the issue again, find the alarm setting off all of the others and call us with that alarm in hand at 1-800-880-6788 so we can get this resolved for you.

10 yr battery-hard wire and Great Kidde reputation; have used Kidde products for 25 years including Kidde fire extinguisher. The voice warning for fire and carbon monoxide is great, alarm is loud enough and continues to warn occupants in our home. What I like most is easy to install; if I can install this kidde-detector anyone can. Have owned this fire alarm for 3wks it’s our 3rd alarm by Kidde in our home at this moment.

These are terrible. Every one I installed immediately said replace alarm. Reset everyone and left them installed for the day with no change. Had to remove them all and replace with old ones until different new ones arrive. Will not purchase again.

The hardwired Kidde detectors in my home were all expiring and chirping. I purchased the Kidde units to simplify the replacement. Initially, the new units also chirped. I called Kidde support. Support was very helpful and found a solution - I needed to connect the new detector to the base included in the box to activate the backup battery. Then I could connect them to the existing ceiling mount. I'm looking forward to a chirp-free 10 years.

Beware of this unit if you are sensitive to light in your room at night. I could really do without the "ambient halo ring".

Hello. This alarm has an ambient light feature where if it detects it is in a dim or dark area, the light will dim and only flash on one small part of the ring. If this is not happening, please call us with the alarm in hand at 1-800-880-6788 so we can figure out what is going on and get this resolved.
