So far so good. I love the idea of not swapping (2) AA batteries twice a year (40 AA batteries over the ten year life of each detector) . I also liked the mounting options, but the single sheetrock anchor screw is very brittle. I broke it using a hand screwdriver - even when I drilled the 3/16" hole.

            Great Idea, Defective Execution
I purchased four of these "10-year" smoke detectors and in less than a year thinking the extra cost would be recovered by the savings of 9-volt batteries needed with traditional smoke detectors. Unfortunately, two of them have gone off erroneously and because of the design, you can only turn these off once which is permanent. I have tried to contact Kiddie and that have not responded. I still like the idea of the 10-year battery smoke detector, but I will never buy Kiddie again.

I like the voice, but not the mounting base
The mounting base on this is very strange. It is about the size of a USA 50 cent piece. I don't like this, and I had some issues with it on a popcorn ceiling. You have to give it a good twist to activate the unit, and it feels like I'm going to rip it right off the ceiling. (See attached photo.) OK, so they tried something different by having two different ways to mount it, one with traditional screws and anchors, and the other with a central drywall anchor screw. Neither gives me much confidence. Mounting issues aside, the unit has a pleasant voice announcing "fire" in a direct tone. This is good for someone who may have issues, such as dementia. It makes it clear what is happening. I've only had it up a few weeks. We'll see how long it lasts and I'm hoping for the best in longevity.

Bought 2 Kidde somke detectors with 10 yr battery. They probably function properly, but now way to tell yet. However, living in a house with high ceilings and being an octogenarian, the need to have the alarm installed by someone else is an expensive and irritating issue. Local fire departments are refusing to do this because of danger and under staffing. Then, to have to test it by pushing a button 20 feet up on the ceiling is silly (dangerous). Also, having to climb up with a vacuum or blower to clean it is even worse. I have suggestions, but don’t think they’ll fit in this form. 1. Test with a laser pointer. 2. The test should determine if cleaning is necesary, 3.Mount with a pulley system so seniors can lower it to clean and test. If you really want to save lives, you need to understand senior (and other) citizen’s physical and mental limitations. Senior living places have alarms with pull cords in bathrooms so fallen people can reach them. Your engineers need to sit down with seniors, overweight, and otherwise handicapped users and discuss their needs. Please forward this information to Kidde and any other mfrs of products used by seniors.

Response from Kidde ExpertJan 12, 2024
Hello. The issue there is that smoke rises and pools on the highest point of the ceiling the same way water falls and pools on the lowest point of the floor. Smoke can only be detected effectively on the ceiling or, if you flat roof, on the wall within a foot of the ceiling. But the same vents that allow in smoke will always allow in dust and debris and the alarms will need to be maintained and cleaned on a regular basis. Anything that keeps out the dust and debris will keep out the smoke and make the alarm slower to respond to smoke. For testing the alarms, we do now make hardwired smart alarms that can connect to an app through Wi-Fi and the alarms can be monitored and tested through the app. The smart alarms are available here on Homedepot.com.

this has gone off for no reason at least 3 times in the 3 months we've had it. i don't have any reason to believe it is a reliable product. definitely doesn't hold up to the "worry free" description.

Hello. If this alarm is going off for smoke 3 times in the first three months, this alarm may be in one the locations to avoid listed in the owner's manual. This would especially include alarms being installed within 3 ft (.9m) of a forced air supply ducts used for heating or cooling, ceiling or whole house ventilating fans, or other high air flow areas. We recommend that alarms not be installed near vents, flues, chimneys, or fans. We recommend that alarms not be installed near doors or windows near areas directly exposed to the weather. We strongly recommend not to install these alarms in garages, attics, and crawl spaces as you will get temperatures, dust, insects, and chemicals that can cause nuisance alarms. Look at where this alarm is and what is near it. Could something be blowing air and therefore dust and debris in the alarm? Could this alarm be in a location prone to dust or insects? Call us with the alarm in hand at 1-800-880-6788 so we can help figure out what is going on. For now, trying cleaning out the alarm. To clean, after disconnecting the alarm, hold the unit by its edge and thoroughly blow through the gap on the side of the unit with compressed air (like keyboard cleaner). See if that clears up the issue.

These Smoke detectors where easy to install and what's impressive was the voice message when activated Saying Fire , Fire get out. This I feel was extra protection helping people understanding the importance of getting out before it gets dangerous. Great Design !
