      Answer This Question

A:  Hello from Kidde. Are you looking to replace hardwired alarms? The alarm model selected is strictly battery operated and cannot interconnect with other smoke alarms. For replacing hardwired alarms, we will need to know what alarms you currently have installed in your home. Are they Kidde alarms and what is your model number? Feel free to call us at 1-800-880-6788, and a representative can advise on a replacement (once we have a little information from you about your current alarms). We are available from 8am - 8pm Eastern Mon-Friday and 9am - 3pm on Saturday.

Q:I bought 4 of these installed them last Saturday. On Tuesday they all started chirping. Took them all down reinstalled, did a test. Two days later started chirping again!! What's wrong?

        Answer This Question

A:  Let's clarify whether the alarms were giving a periodic chirp (every 30 seconds) or going into the full 'fire' alarm. The model given is for a battery-operated photoelectric alarm with 10-year battery. These alarms are unable to interconnect with each other. It is very unusual for battery operated alarms (which cannot interconnect) to All start doing the same action. Kidde can help figure out this problem. Please call 1-800-880-6788 while you are with the alarms. Kidde does stand behind our products, and we are happy to troubleshoot what is going on and resolve the issue for you.

A:  We bought 4 and they all work great. Except for one that kept chirping. Otherwise we’re very pleased with them.

Q:Do these battery operated sensors interconnect? If one detected smoke would another on a different floor go off?

            Answer This Question

A:  Hello. No, not with this model. You would want our wire-free interconnect alarms models 21028747, 21028759, 21028753, 21028757, and 21027326. These 5 alarms will all work with each other and interconnect wirelessly using a digital radio signal. The hardwired versions do need to be hardwired. These are our P4010 wireless alarms. For more information, feel free to call us at 1-800-880-6788.

              Solved: false alarms
Like others, mine would sometimes go off for no reason. Apparently the mounting holes from the previous detector were getting dust into the sensor. I have had no issues since I filled the old holes in the wall behind the sensor. I would have given this 5 stars if the instructions said to fill any holes from a previous unit.

                Failed in 13 months!
I was happy to get what I thought was an alarm that had a "10-year life." Sadly, that life was cut short. :-( After only 13 months, it started with the 3 long beeps indicating smoke detection, which was (thankfully) erroneous. Trash!

                  Couldn't turn it off
Why do these smoke detectors always fail in the middle of the night? We've only had this unit a few months, and it went off at 4 am. We couldn't turn it off! We had to hit it with a hammer and cut the wires just to make sure it would shut up.

                  Hello mercedes,
Thanks for reaching out. There is an area on the back of the unit that you break through the label and puncture the back label. This will reveal a plastic "screw" that you turn counter clockwise to disengage the battery. Well, the good part is the detectors did not catch fire....
I inspect and replace smoke detectors in apartment buildings. I have boxes and boxes of this detector, dead. On some units the ten year battery seems to last about three years. The test beep goes on too long as well.

Not good long term near bathrooms
Bought two 2-packs, one for each level of the house. The ones in the basement, lower level (entertainment area), main level (kitchen, dining, living rooms) are all just fine. A couple cooking-related false alarms, no big deal. The one on the upper level (bedrooms, main bathroom) started going off for no reason. Sometimes it would go off for a little bit and stop. Other times it kept going for several minutes before i could find a stick to press the "hush" button. Then it would silence for ~10 mins and start again. After waking up twice to it last night and again this morning as i was sitting on the toilet, i decided to pull it down, turn it off and buy a new, different brand. I looked at the date we had written on there. We installed in Oct. 2017, and I'm going to replace it now, Sept. 2020. Almost 3 years. Not bad, really. Just wish it would've lasted 10 years as advertised. We had a First Alert for ~10 years. It went off a few times, all due to cooking (a couple were due to someone falling asleep while cooking, so that saved us). We replaced with a newer First Alert detector that lasted another 10 years. Then i saw these on sale at Home Depot. Being familiar with Kidde because i've had a couple fire extinguishers of theirs, i decided to get them. After this incident, i'm going back to First Alert.

                        Tricky to silence
Installed in '17, failed today. Could not be silenced until I figured out how. You might need a hammer, but my foot worked fine.

                        Hello Carl,
Nuisance alarms, particularly in the middle of the night, are caused by something interfering with the sensor. These units are looking for particles of combustion, so when a small insect or piece of dust gets into the sensor (*located inside of the unit) the unit will interpret this as smoke particles. We recommend using compressed air, through the side vents/ bug screen and blowing out/cleaning the alarm really well.

Hello. That is unusual. Are the alarms in a location that get especially cold or especially hot like a garage, attic, or crawl space? That can affect the sensor. Call us with these 4 alarms in hand at 1-800-880-6788 or contact us at https://www.kidde.com/home-safety/en/us/support/help-center/submit-a-question/ with details about what the sounded like when giving the warning and let us troubleshoot this and see what we can do for you about these alarms. We'd like to help you.

Please read the instructions before purchasing. It seems there are two types of smoke detectors. One for fast spreading fires and one for slower ones. My sense would be to purchase a smoke detector that responds to both types of fires. I did install this one in our family room and trust that it would do its job, if necessary. Would have been nice if mounting hardware were included (screws and wall anchors).
