Q:California, 2014 10 year batteryKidde Is lying about 2 year Battery. The code in most states is 10 year battery guaranteed and not warranted. If you don’t have a 10year one, you will not be code compliant. If House burns down, not compliant. No insurance.

A:  Hello. Different states, different counties, and even different cities will have different code requirements for what kind of smoke alarms are required and where. Before purchasing smoke alarms, please refer to your local fire codes and your local authority requiring smoke alarms, usually your local fire department or local fire marshal's office, to find out exactly what kind of smoke alarms you are required to have and exactly where you are required to have them.

Q:I live in California, and code is 10 years. The battery must last 10 years not the two-year one they are trying to sell you. You have to replace the whole detector every 10 years. You don’t change the battery every.6 months. Home depot should know better

A:  Your smoke detector needs to be replaced every 10 years. Most of the ones are sealed and you can’t change the battery. Because you have to replace it every 10 years no matter what. Search your state code for smoke alarm battery it will tell you 10 years.
