Hello Trevor, Yes. The signal is different for smoke and CO. The beep pattern is 4 quick beeps for carbon monoxide so the smoke won't sound if there is carbon monoxide as it is programmed with 3 beeps.

I changed the batteries in this thing and now it beeps periodically, happens about every 8 hrs or...

Can these be wired in series?

The wire (red) which interlinks the units and allows them to all communicate an alarm is wired in series. This red wire begins at the interconnection between the first and second units, and continues on in that manner until reaching the last unit The 120V AC power (Black and White wires) must be connected in parallel from the power source to all units.

It is unlikely if you can use the Test button and they react properly that they are wired incorrectly. What I suspect is that one detector is defective and does not operate properly when on battery. With the AC power off and when all Units are saying “Fire”, remove the batteries at the units one at a time to see if the alarm stops. The unit where the battery was removed and “Fire” stops is the defective unit.

AA batteries will work regardless of the brand as long as they are 1.5 volts. I have seen the condition you speak of and it was corrected by removing the batteries and reinstalling them making sure they are pushed as far up in to the unit as possible. Looking up at the unit, the battery farthest to the outside should have the positive side (with a nipple) facing to the left. The inner most battery should have positive side facing to the right. I would also point out that this unit is very sensitive to a rapid change in humidity. I have it installed in a hallway outside a bathroom door. In the winter months when the air in the house has lower humidity, after someone takes a shower and opens the door, the steam from the shower causes the unit to have a problem causing flashing lights and beeping until the humidity level goes back down.

If I remember correctly, I used a flashlight and close-up glasses to find out which way the batteries go, but if you go to https://www.kidde.com/home-safety/en/us/support/help-center/browse-articles/articles/how_do_i_replace_my_smoke_alarms_battery_.html, there is a photo of how they go in (scroll down). Package arrived in good condition. I liked there were plenty of different spaced holes in the base to fit most any electrical box for connecting to ceiling. Only needed to loosen two screws to remove the old base and install the new one. Using 3 screw type wire connectors, transferred one wire at a time from the old alarm connector to the new one without having to shut off electricity. And very easy to twist and lock the new alarm onto the base and get the battery opening in any position you want. Pressed the test button on each alarm and as soon as one would go off the other alarm went off too, both alarm and voice, just as advertised. Entire installation for both alarms took under 30 minutes from the time I got the ladder out, read the instruction an put the ladder away. And at 69 years old, I would say it was one the easiest jobs I performed on my house this year. I totally recommend this alarm for the price and ease of installation.

Very simple installation and testing procedures - took me 5 minutes to install. I like this product because it uses battery backup instead of running on batteries. It was a good solid 8 years before I had to replace the original Kidde I bought, so I do like the longevity of the product itself.

We have a house that was built in 1997 with 8 hard wired smoke detectors. I replaced 2 with the combo detector and 6 with Kidde smoke detectors. They were all an easy replacement, the existing connector could be reused on all 8. All 8 of the new Kidde detectors "talk" to each other, so if one goes off they all go off! So far so good, the self tests have worked great.

This was replacement for 10 year old unit, Kidde KN-COSM-IB (actually replaced two). Old connector did not quite fit into new unit. Had to install supplied connector. Battery for old unit (9V) required unit to be twisted CCW to open to access battery. New unit uses two 1.5V AA and are installed right under battery cover as shown in picture. Other than the battery differences they seem to be identical in operation.

Easy peasy installation and it works. What's not to like? However, it's only a few days old so the jury is still out on its long term performance. I purchased 2 replacing 2 7-yr old alarms and the old ones still had the original batteries. So, that's a good recommendation right there!
