hello May, Thanks for reaching out. Batteries should be changed every 6 months, to 1 year maximum.

My old detectors were battery operated. Can I use these with just the battery?

hello Moe, The battery is only supposed to be used as a backup. If you run this unit on battery alone, the battery will go dead in about 1 month.

If I understand you correctly...You either want to use a 20 year old unit or you have a 20 year old system...If it is the first...Why would you want to use that outdated unit? If it is the latter if you're hard wired...no problems. If you want to avoid the alarms going off...Go to your main panel and find the smoke alarm switch and turn it off...then install the replacement unit.

I have an old FireX model FX 1218 hardwired smoke detector i need to replace. Which current model would be a fitting replacement?

The FireX i4618AC should be a good replacement for your FX1218 if your unit is the ionization model AD,ADC. Model PAD is a photoelectric model. I just replaced five 11 year old FireX detectors last year. Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years. In 2009, Kidde bought FireX. In doing this, Kidde change the hardwired connector on the FireX detectors. When I replaced my 5 Firex smoke detectors in 2009, the base and wired connector were still the same and were easy to replace. The pins on the detector for the AC harness were straight across and not like the pins in your picture. Sometime around 2015, Kidde change the base and the wired connector for the FireX smoke detector. What I had to do was to replace the entire unit, including the base that attaches to the ceiling and I had to purchase adapters that Kidde/FireX sell so you didn't have to replace the wiring harness. BUT, looking at your picture of your old alarm, the pins for the AC harness are stagger and not straight across like the old Firex detectors that I had. At this point, I'm not too sure if the AC harness connector is the same.

Our smoke alarms went off the other day due to some work being done in the house. Couple days lat...

The Kidde Firex Hardwired Smoke Detectors were very easy to install and wire. The great thing about them is the Ionization Sensor, and that they also have a 9-Volt Battery Backup in case you loose power. The price was perfect and because they came in a 4-Pack, I was able to replace 3 which I had in my home along with allowing me to add another in my laundry room. I find the KIDDE brand to be perfect for any home. Along with the smoke detector's I have also installed the KIDDE Carbon Monoxide / Smoke Detector combos in my kitchen and garage.

Do not work
You need to make sure you test the interconnected feature after install!!! I installed these to replace ten year old expired kiddie models. As numerous other reviewers have noted, when one is set off, it’s supposed to sound all of the wired alarms in the house... but they don’t! This is concerning in the event of a fire when people are sleeping or with elderly or mobility impaired. I tried three different four pack boxes and mixed and matched and could not get any five alarms to all work together. Never more than two would sound with the primary, and my house is only 990sq ft, so it’s not a wire length issue, it’s a quality control issue. I switched to an older model number of the alarms with the front spring door. They worked instantly and only cost a few bucks more for a six pack then this did for a four pack. Actually cheaper per piece and now I’ll be having the electrician run wire out to my sleeping porch for the sixth one.

I purchased & installed 5 original detectors that were beginning to fail !! Install was easy although the hardwired plug was slightly different from the original ( same brand), but was easy using crimp connectors to the new 3 pin plug !! Units work well and have an included 9V battery backup !!

Had to replace all 7 smoke detector in my house. These were easy to install. My house was already wired for the triangle three prong connection but if you have a different connection these come with connectors to change them out. It maybe took 20 minutes to install all of them and test them out. Very easy.
