Is the warranty for 5 years as the description says, or 10 years as the user manual says?

The way i read it is the unit should be replaced after 10 years. It is very confusing. I took the 5 year as the limited warranty on the unit. I can say that my first unit purchased years ago started going off with a warning beep and could not be stopped with new batteries. On further review it was over 10 years old and was just failing. So replaced it with new Kidde unit. I did mark the date installed on the unit to see how long it lasts. Hope this helps

There isn’t one as far as I know. Kind of defeats the purpose of low battery warning if you can hush it. My low battery warning has not gone off yet. 2 years on original batteries.

Does this also detect natural gas leaks?

I don't believe it does. Carbon Monoxide is odorless, so it is good to have a working Detector. There is a sulfur chemical added to Natural Gas, so that your nose can detect any leak. You will know it when you smell it. Call the Gas Company. It also can explode when exposed to a flame or spark. Very Bad.

Does this unit work without the batteries installed?

Yes. The battery is there in case of a power outage. If you lose electricity, the unit will beep and the battery takes over. However, the battery should be changed every year.

Super easy, not really an install. Pulled tab, inserted 2 AA batteries and plugged into wall. As long as light is green, I'm good. Will sound alarm if there's any danger. Super easy, super happy!

Ready to use out of the package. Simple installation. AC operation plus battery backup. Unit has a 10 year life span. Previous unit alerted end of life operation at 10 years and 1 month as designed. Unit is installed in a finished 2nd floor garage studio. Previous unit detected CO from backup generator running outside of garage at ground level. I trust the Kidde CO monitor. Based on experience with previous Kidde CO monitor, this unit should be fine.

Plugging in a few of these into wall outlets at strategic locations around your home, especially close to sleeping areas where they can be heard if the unthinkable happens, is probably the quickest and most effective route to high stakes peace of mind you can do for your precious family.

This alarm saved our lives Thanksgiving night. Around 10pm the Kidde alarm started beeping and the red alarm was flashing next to “Move to Fresh Air”. I checked my heater - it was asleep. Opened up the front door. Pressed the alarm reset and it stopped for 10 seconds then started beeping again. I took the alarm to the opened front door and pressed the reset. It stopped. Plugged it back in and it started beeping red. I changed the batteries and plugged it back in. Started beeping red again. It had to be defective! Just unplug it for good, I thought to myself. I felt fine. I checked my gas stove and one of the burners was in the "on" position! I am not sure how the knob got turned, probably when I started cleaning the kitchen at 5:00pm or when I finished it up at 9:00pm. We opened all doors and within seconds, the beeping stopped. 6 months ago, I had to replace the alarm because it had reached its end-of-life. I was so mad. I am glad I was not mad enough to NOT replace it otherwise we would possibly be dead! I can’t believe I almost unplugged it and ignored it. I am buying Kidde carbon monoxide detectors for Christmas presents for my family!
