Answer This Question

A:  It is available as a single pack right now as the I12060A model 21029886 with adaptors that you won't need for older FireX and First Alert/BRK wiring harnesses.

Q:How long should the backup 9V battery last in the hardwired unit? We just replaced in October 2022 all of our Kidde units and 2 of them have been chirping & needed new batteries already. It's only been 10wks since replacing the units.

    Answer This Question

A:  Hello. The batteries should normally last 6 months to a year with one of the battery models listed in the owner's manual. 3 month is a bit of a short time. For best battery life, we would recommend one of the alkaline batteries of the model and brand listed in our owner's manual and with a really good use-by date of 7 to 10 years out. If you are using an alkaline battery, we would strongly recommend a battery with at least a really good use-by date of at least 3 to 4 years out. Batteries that are close to their use-by date, within 1 year, are often not powerful enough for our alarms or not powerful enough to last 6 months to a year.

Q:Is there a direct replacement for Firex model FADC (4618 series)?
      by|Jan 11, 2023
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  Hello. There is no direct replacement for your alarms. That being said, you can use any of our current alarms to replace your older alarms. You will have to take down all of the older alarms before putting up any new alarms. You will have to change out the mounting brackets at each location but that will just take a screwdriver to change out. You will either have to change out and rewire the wiring harness plugs at each location or you can choose to use the KA-F2 adaptors to adapt the old plugs to our new alarms. The adaptors would plug into the old plugs and the new alarms would plug into the adaptors. The model for the adaptor pack is the 21028461 which includes the KA-F2 and the KA-B2 for some of the older BRK/First Alert plugs.

Simplest replacement of any home repair items I have. The alarm connection plug fit perfectly with my existing wired smoke alarm system. I really like the model I selected with backup battery access on the front side of the alarm so I don't have to remove the alarm from the ceiling and unplugging it to replace the battery. Simple and fast online ordering.

My Kidde Fire X Smoke Detector was easy to install. I really liked the easy access to the battery with the front load battery access. It has all of the features you look for in a fire alarm. I would highly recommend this product.

I have had these for a little over a year, maybe 16 months. They were easily to install. The battery is not hard to change (yes, despite being hardwired, I have had to change the battery in them). They do alert you, and they are loud. They will wake you up at 3am. They will also alert the neighbors (they text me to tell me my house was beeping). Unfortunately, they alert me when it rains, not when there is smoke. I can't leave my garage door open or they will go off.

Response from Kidde ExpertOct 29, 2019
          Hello WakesMeUpAt3AM,
Typically, Nuisance alarms, particularly in the middle of the night, are caused by something interfering with the sensor. These units are looking for particles of combustion, so when a small insect or piece of dust gets into the sensor (*located inside of the unit) the unit will interpret this as smoke particles. We recommend using compressed air, through the side vents/ bug screen and blowing out/cleaning the alarm really well. If you continue to have issues, please call product support. 800 880 6788

Our 11 year old fire detectors were not interchangeable with the new FireX detectors, but it only took a couple minutes to rewire using the new wiring harness included with the new set. We installed 10 units in about an hour and a half. The units have a great top-loading battery compartment and the check and quiet buttons are also right on top. Having a wide mounting collar against the ceiling eliminated any need for touch-up painting from the old ring. Its ionization sensor feature is a big comfort.

Easy to install, comes with batteries and mounting plate to fit nearly any hardwire box. Comes up short of five stars for one hassle. The sticker ironically proclaiming ‘NO MORE HASSLE’ on the front, advertising the front load battery door. First off, I’ve already bought this and taken it out of the box, I don’t need to be sold on this feature. Second, the sticker is printed on paper with a regular adhesive backing. It leaves residue and paper remnants on the front of the unit. This could all have been printed on the pull tab that activates the battery. They do also come with a shower cap looking bonnet to keep them dust free if you are renovating. Those are worth handing onto for the next time you paint.

Instructions were concise and easy to follow. Smoke detectors were a replacement for 20 year old Kidde detectors and installed very easily on existing wiring with interconnect. I feel as though we are safer with detectors that are not 20 years old. I really like that the batteries can be changed without removing the unit from the mount-simply push in on the door and it exposes the battery.
