Protect your family with the Kidde Firex Smoke Detector, Hardwired with Battery Backup, Smoke Alarm. The hardwired, ionization Kidde Firex Smoke Detector, Hardwired with Battery Backup, Smoke Alarm operates on a 120-Volt power source with a 9-volt alkaline battery backup. Using ionization sensor technology, the Kidde Firex Smoke Detector alerts to invisible fire particles, even during power outages. Red LED blinking lights flash for standby, if the alarm senses combustion, fire, or smoke, alarm memory if the alarm is activated, and hush mode. UL Certified with a 10-year limited warranty. • 85 decibel fire alarm alerts of fire
  • Ionization sensor - detects invisible fire particles (associated with fast flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric sensing alarms

Yes but the plugs were different so you have to buy adapters. Another marketing ploy I guess.

I have the Firex model 1218 which no longer exists. Is this the correct replacement model?

Hello smokedtectornovice,Firex became part of Kidde in 2008 and their product was discontinued. That being said, all of the new units will come with a wiring harness and mounting bracket that will need to be installed. The new units are not compatible with the old ones.

1 have 11 off these smoke detectors in my home and have had no issues with false alarms. I doubt there is any way lower the sensitivity other than relocating them further from your kitchen, but since these are wired units that could be a lot or work.

What could be source of carbon monoxide in the home?

Hello rico, Thanks for reaching out. Chirping is an indication of either low battery, or if chirping every 30 seconds, the unit has come to the end of it's 7 year life. If neither of those pertain, Please call Kidde support at 1-800-880-6788 Open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM EST Saturday 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM EST. They're the experts and will be able to assist. Thank you.

Simplest replacement of any home repair items I have. The alarm connection plug fit perfectly with my existing wired smoke alarm system. I really like the model I selected with backup battery access on the front side of the alarm so I don't have to remove the alarm from the ceiling and unplugging it to replace the battery. Simple and fast online ordering.

I have had these for a little over a year, maybe 16 months. They were easily to install. The battery is not hard to change (yes, despite being hardwired, I have had to change the battery in them). They do alert you, and they are loud. They will wake you up at 3am. They will also alert the neighbors (they text me to tell me my house was beeping). Unfortunately, they alert me when it rains, not when there is smoke. I can't leave my garage door open or they will go off.

Response from Kidde ExpertOct 29, 2019
Hello WakesMeUpAt3AM,
Typically, Nuisance alarms, particularly in the middle of the night, are caused by something interfering with the sensor. These units are looking for particles of combustion, so when a small insect or piece of dust gets into the sensor (*located inside of the unit) the unit will interpret this as smoke particles. We recommend using compressed air, through the side vents/ bug screen and blowing out/cleaning the alarm really well. If you continue to have issues, please call product support. 800 880 6788

Our 11 year old fire detectors were not interchangeable with the new FireX detectors, but it only took a couple minutes to rewire using the new wiring harness included with the new set. We installed 10 units in about an hour and a half. The units have a great top-loading battery compartment and the check and quiet buttons are also right on top. Having a wide mounting collar against the ceiling eliminated any need for touch-up painting from the old ring. Its ionization sensor feature is a big comfort.

Easy to install, comes with batteries and mounting plate to fit nearly any hardwire box. Comes up short of five stars for one hassle. The sticker ironically proclaiming ‘NO MORE HASSLE’ on the front, advertising the front load battery door. First off, I’ve already bought this and taken it out of the box, I don’t need to be sold on this feature. Second, the sticker is printed on paper with a regular adhesive backing. It leaves residue and paper remnants on the front of the unit. This could all have been printed on the pull tab that activates the battery. They do also come with a shower cap looking bonnet to keep them dust free if you are renovating. Those are worth handing onto for the next time you paint.

Instructions were concise and easy to follow. Smoke detectors were a replacement for 20 year old Kidde detectors and installed very easily on existing wiring with interconnect. I feel as though we are safer with detectors that are not 20 years old. I really like that the batteries can be changed without removing the unit from the mount-simply push in on the door and it exposes the battery.
