Q:Will this work Fire x photoelectric 4480 wires to connect a newer kiddie model or do we need to replace all wires and dectectors?
by|May 21, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hello. There is no direct replacement for your alarms. That being said, you can use any of our current alarms to replace your older alarms. You will have to take down all of the older alarms before putting up any new alarms. You will have to change out the mounting brackets at each location but that will just take a screwdriver to change out. You will either have to change out and rewire the wiring harness plugs at each location or you can choose to use this KA-F2 adaptor to adapt the old plugs to our new alarms. The adaptors would plug into the old plugs and the new alarms would plug into the adaptors. Note that the adaptors will not work with our new Detect line of smoke alarms.

Q:I'm replacing an old (2015) PI-2010 with a new PI-2010. The old one had a male connector (see photo), but the new one has a female connector. Does this adapter fit the female connector coming from the house wiring, and the unit itself? Thanks!

    Answer This Question

A:  The PI2010 still has the same wiring harness plug connector. No adaptor needed. No photo showed up in your question. Please call us at 1-800-880-6788 with the old and new alarms in hand and photos ready to email to us so we can see what you are talking about.

      Answer This Question

A:  Hello. No. These adaptors are for a particular older FireX wiring harness and a particular older BRK/First Alert wiring harness. We do not have adaptors for USI wiring harnesses.

A:  No. There is no adaptor for your wiring harness. You will need to take down all of the old alarms before putting up any new alarms and you will need to to rewire and change out the wiring harness plugs and the mounting brackets. The old alarms will damage any new alarms.

          Misleading on Adapters
Not one Home Depot in the Atlanta area carries this much-needed adapter to connect Kidde to Kidde harnesses, and yet an abundance of Kidde to Firex on shelves in a two-pack of different adapters…thus rendering your purchase to one you will probably throw away. Moreover the image shown with the 20-9003 adapter gives the impression there are also two in the box, like in-store packs. So I ordered one box. Only one inside. Now I gotta wait a few more days and order yet another.

Saved Time, But Hard To Snap In Place
I am in the midst of replacing all seven smoke detectors in my house with four Kidde TruSense Smoke and three TruSense Smoke and CO detectors. Most of my (extremely) old detectors were FireX, and these adapters saved me some serious rewiring. It didn't look pleasant to pull the jumble of wires and wire nuts out of the ceiling and hardwire the connectors that came with the new detectors! My first attempt to connect the adapter to the original wire harness took about 25 minutes and resulted in sore fingers for days. The dang thing just didn't want to snap in place. This problem appears to be a result of the center tab. I'm not really sure why it's there, since it doesn't clip in place like the side tabs. It doesn't appear to provide any structural advantage, and is very much in the way. When I was finally able to get the side tabs to snap into place over the old harness, the center tab was bent pretty heinously. It might have been easier to just cut it off with a hacksaw. After struggling with the second install for several minutes, I learned my lesson and went in search of a pair of needlenose pliers. That made it much easier to get the side tabs to snap into place, and it was off to the races after that. I have now replaced five out of seven. One needs to be rewired, because it does not have a compatible harness (but I already knew that and only bought six adapters). The other is 15 feet up on my vaulted bedroom ceiling, and I have to drag up the 10 ft ladder from the garage. I'll hopefully get around to that before 2021! I was torn between giving this three or four stars, but I opted for four since it saved me from rewiring. I do wish that they sold these individually for FireX or First Alert. I'm going to wind up throwing the six unused First Alert adapters in a drawer somewhere, and that seems like a waste. Selling them individually might have cut the price in half as well.

I purchased new kidde smoke detectors to replace my old one and these adapters make installation super easy. My previous smoke detectors were already hardwired so it literally took minutes to install, i simply detached the old ones attached the adapter and attached the new smoke detectors. I highly recommend buying the adapters for easy installation!

The adapters were not needed since the alarms had the wiring kit included and the harness was not able to be used in my model

Adapter just worked fine. Made it much easier to install the new detectors on an old Kidde base without having to redo the wiring while up on a tall ladder.

I did not have to hardwire. I could use the existing three prongs. In the previous smoke detector.

I started having false alarms with Kidde fire alarms installed in 2016. I noticed the new alarms have a different connection, and I was afraid I might need to hire an electrician. I purchased this quick connect adapter because I wanted to see if it would connect a new alarm to my system—and it did. When I am ready to replace the alarms, these connectors will make it easy to do myself.
