Hi Susan, That IS the reason I purchased Kleans MS. Works wonderfully and not art store prices. Happy Painting! Libby

Reconsider doing that. There are some serious safety issues using it. A gallon should be adequate but if it is on bare wood and the wood is stained, you might remove some of the stain. If there is a already a varnish on the wood, adhesion of the polyurethane to it might be an issue, in which case you might want to very lightly sand it with 220 sandpaper. I would not mop it with mineral spirits, just apply a small amount to a good quality paper towel, like Bounty, and wipe a small section at a time. You will be breathing the stuff, so a respirator would make sense, if you can even obtain one during this pandemic. Other people in the area will also be exposed. Dust settling on the polyurethane is inevitable. A satin finish flooring polyurethane can help with that. Brush marks are a problem. Flooring polyurethane is difficult to apply thinly and evenly. It dries much slower than it says on the can. I suggest for such a large area that you vacuum it first, then dry-Swiffer it. Consider spraying the flooring polyurethane thinned 50:50 with mineral spirits using a high volume low pressure sprayer. It will require a compressor and a dessicant filter between the hose end and the spray gun. It will dry a lot faster with no brush marks and make it easier to complete one section at a time. Second coats dry a lot faster than the first coat. Ventilation needs to be adequate. If you plan on spraying it, you absolutely must use a respirator -- a mask is not adequate! Plan not to walk on it for 2 days, which is longer than the can says and that means you will have to wait that long to apply the second coat. Don't paint yourself into a corner. This is a difficult project, even on a smaller scale. I have used various stains and polyurethane techniques on our engineered wood floors in our house. I have never been able to duplicate the factory color and finish on our floors when they got damaged and I needed to re-stain and poly them. I am always just hoping that it will be better than it was. I am planning to repair 2 areas but am procrastinating for all of the above reasons. Other considerations: clean shoes are necessary. To protect them from the poly, place a supermarket bag on them. You will want to wear gloves when handling the chemicals. Use mineral spirits to clean up. Lacquer thinner for clean-up works better but is more expensive, extremely volatile and more toxic. Again, use that respirator if handling more than a small amount of it.

If you have already completed the project then there shouldn't be any issues. For future reference, water based stains and coatings thin with water.

Works basically the same, for thinning and clean up. This does not have the vapor smell associated with paint thinner.

Cleans up oil base paint extremely well. I don’t recommend paint thinner at all. Mineral spirits is the best choice. You can let the used spirits sit undisturbed for a few days and the paint will settle leaving clear usable spirits on top. Pour slowly into another container and wipe out the deposited paint from the first container with paper towels. You will have the least wasted spirits and hazard waste.

Used during and at cleanup while staining a desk/workbench that I built. It worked well in cleaning up brushes and made it less of a chore than usual. Haven't noticed any objectionable odors and it just plain worked well.

Works great for thinning Watco stain and for mixing with urethane for wipe on finish. Light years better than some "green" mineral spirits which nearly ruined a project when I used that for making wipe on finish. Had to totally sand off the mess and refinish the Piano Bench using KleanStrip for my thinner.

I am making a lot of woodworking projects right now, some small, some big but almost all need some sanding and finishing. The vital step for me in between is wiping down with Mineral spirits. Not only gives you a very clean surface to work with but also gives you a preview of how the grain is going to look once a finish is applied. I use this every day in the shop and always try to keep a spare gallon on hand.
