Questions & Answers

Use this before a poly/stain combo like Minwax Polyshades?

I have an old wood desk with a pecan stain now that I want to apply Polyshades to in a darker, walnut finish. Can I use this product to help with adhesion?
Asked by: StephenM
Yes you can use it on enamels and oil paints as well as water based products. See the video above and read the description. Polyshade is not a stain. It really doesn't work well on bare wood. It's main purpose is to go over previously stained and sealed surfaces to add color or make an existing color different. Keep in mind that it will not soak in.

How long do I wait before priming and/or painting? I read answers to questions where some people say to let it completely dry and apply a second coat while another person says to prime within 10 minutes. Some say it is tacky others say it is not. If tacky do I wait for it to dry completely? Can anyone clarify these points? I read the product label but it is not too clear.
Asked by: Denny
I let my primer sit for four hours and then I painted over the primer and it worked fine. No problems.

Do you have to wipe this off after applying?

Asked by: stefcatz
I did so my cabinets would be free of any remaining polyurethane finish.

Klean-Strip 1 qt. Liquid Sandpaper Cleaner & Deglosser is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 400.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great...if you understand what it is and its actual intended use Deglossers are a chemical cocktail of various solvents that are used to clean and soften smooth finishes such as high-gloss paint, varnish, and lacquers. They are NOT a stripper - NOT intended to strip any significant amount of finish. The intended use is to clean off contaminants (wax, grease, oil, dirt, etc) and chemically open smooth finishes so primer can more tightly bond to the surface. You must primer fairly quickly after applying, usually within 10-minutes, e.g. while the surface is still clean and tacky. If you let it sit too long, the surface will chemically close off somewhat as the solvents evaporate off. To use a deglosser effectively you'll want you'll still want to clean your finish with detergent and lightly sand to scour the surface. Then wipe down with mineral spirits to clean up remaining dust. Finally, wipe on the deglosser (per the instructions) and apply your first coat of primer within 10-minutes. Also, I highly recommend using a quality oil-based or bonding primer if you're painting over varnish or lacquer. Excellent results can be had.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Klean Liquid Sander First time I have ever used a liquid de-glosser before. In the past I have just sanded and then painted. Renovating a house where the prior owners painted all the mill-work and cabintry with oil-based paint so the thought of sanding was beyond imaginable. This de-glosser did remove the gloss. I did use medium weight steel wool to scrub the chemicals into the woodwork. It is a very manual process, but much faster than sanding everything. The gloss was knocked down and the chemical also cleaned the moldings and cabintry (I had cleaned them with detergent first and then used the Klean deglosser, but this stuff pulled off dirt that I did not even see). The priming went well and took to the deglossed services easily. Not having used other products I do not have a comparision, but overall the process went well. I would recommend this product. The cost was minimal, just a lot of elbow grease.

I would suppose this deglosser would work for specific finishes and not for others. I am planning to paint my 1950's woodwork that has been originally finished with the old toxic chemicals and then refinished on top with a coat of old oil based polyurethane. I was just trying to prepsir the surface to accept the primer and paint withou EVER CHIPPING. When applied with a cloth in a circular motion as directed, the product clumped up and formed small balls of what I assume was the old finish. It became really messy. I couldn't get it off unless I used a green scrubber pad. It took 1/2 bottle for one side of a door. It began to smell really badly like varnish. I stopped. It sat for a few days and I tried to sand it. It left globs of some sort of deposit that did not want to be sanded off. It was terrible. The other side of the door sanded quickly and easily. My experience.....not to be used on certain finishes....wish that would be indicated on the bottle.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works well - with limitations I am a painter and tried this product for the first time when painting previously varnished wood rather than my usual routine of cleaning and sanding. It took a bit to learn how much rubbing was necessary to penetrate the old finish and make a new surface. More then a quick wipe, but not a laborious scrub. it dries quickly and provided a stable substrate for a latex topcoat. I don't yet know how strongly it binds to the wood. Will it resist chipping? We'll see. Instructions mention that some surfaces should be precleaned with TSP like cleaner. True. Kitchen cabinet doors, with the oil from hands, bled right through. This product is not a sealer like an oil or shellac primer. In my case, even using TSP before rubbing on the liquid sander was not enough to prevent bleed through. I ended up using an oil primer. In that case, the liquid sander was unnecessary. Overall, I liked this product and will use it again- but not for surfaces that are heavily soiled with bleed through. There, the old standby primers remain the best.

I have painted a lot of cabinets and woodwork over the years, and I have always spent a lot of time sanding and prepping the surfaces to get good adhesion of the paint. I had a lot of cabinets, doors and doorframes to paint, and I just dreaded the work sanding all of them. I heard about this product from my daughter and it was fantastic! Rub the old paint surface with a rag and enough deglosser to wet the surface well, and the dirt and grease come right off and the surface is left with a slight haze that holds the paint well. It cut my prep time by about 75%. I sprayed all of the doors and cabinets and brushed the doorframes. I had no fisheyes or other flaws that I might have expected without complete sanding. I highly recommend this product and will definitely use it again.

Purchased to use over an oil based enamel screen door with a high gloss surface. It went on easily using a microfiber cloth rubbing in circular motions. I couldn't really see that it dulled the shiny surface at all so I was skeptical but the Kilz enamel primer I used went on with no problem and the finish coat of Rust-Oleum white went on OK as well. It saved me hours of sanding as there is a decorative Fleur-de-lis design elements on the door that would have taken forever to sand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is so much better than the rest Ive been using Gloss Off for the past year on my house doing a full remodel. This week I started doing our kitchen cabinets and ran out of the Gloss Off so i ran to Home Depot and picked this up. The results are ten times better. With the gloss off it left a mildly deglossed surface and did a good job cleaning. This Klean Strip deglosser is almost better than sanding. Its smooth and clean but extremely flat and grabby. Its awesome.

I used a scrubby pad to apply this product, the type you’d use to lightly scub dishes, this product really moved the finish. I then primed and painted. It’s been two years and the paint looks perfect! I’ve recently purchased this to strip the finish off some old rattan furniture so I can restain.
