10-1/4 in. Ratcheting ACSR Cable Cutter

Until now when I had to cut any large gauge wire I would have to nip at it a little at a time with conventional wire cutters. Now with these ratcheting cable cutters I can cut almost any size wire with one cut. The cutters are very well built with robust cutting blades and padded handles. The ratchet mechanism gives you plenty of mechanical advantage to cut the larger gauge wire all at once. The cutter also has a free travel built in so you can insert the wire to be cut and then manually close down the cutter to accommodate the size wire you are cutting. I would highly recommend these to anyone who has to deal with cutting larger diameter wires.

I have never owned a pair of ratcheting cutters, but this is the way to go for heavy wire or cable. Running power to a new shop addition was easier with these cutters. The cutters went easily through the heavy wire for a clean cut with just a few strokes. They are simple to wrap around the wire and to release when you’re ready to cut again. I have other tools by this brand, I would recommend it.

I am an electrician and, just like a dentist, I want professional grade, high quality, precision tools. Most are made in the USA, but sometimes you must look elsewhere to find the tool that does the job. The Klein Tools #63607 (OMSID 203195003) 10-1/4" Ratcheting ACSR Cable Cutter is such a tool...made in Germany. I'm actually surprised that it doesn't tell time because it has been as finely made as a precision Swiss watch. For years I have used Klein's #63060 which, unlike the 63607's, are not rated for cutting ACSR (Aluminum Cable Steel Reinforced) or tri-plex/quad with steel messenger. I flinched the first time I cut through steel messenger with my new cutters and I am still reluctant to loan any of my cutting tools to fellow tradesmen...I could just see 'em trying to whack #5 re-bar. These babies are up to the task, however (no, not for re-bar). Put them in your pouch and put them to use. They aren't heavy or, at only 10-1/4" long, cumbersome, and cover a wide range of wire/cable sizes. The ratcheting mechanism actually takes hold with cables about 1-1/8" in diameter. The ratcheting is relatively easy, but over time it will only help those chiseled forearms. Finally, even the best tools need repair. Klein has a complete parts list on their website so you can keep your investment in tip-top shape after even many years of use. Thank you, Klein Tools! I thank you and my customers thank you. Almost forgot. The cutters went through that steel messenger with little more than a scratch on the blade's paint. Amazing, really.

As an electrician, I've long been a fan of Ideal Industries and their products. Cutters work well. I do like the comfort of the handles, with its rubber overmolding - definitely nicer than the pair I am coming from. I didn't really see a benefit to the Bigfoot part of the handle personally, but then I've only used them through 4/0 thus far. Handles do need to spread quite a bit before engaging the ratcheting mechanism each time, so folks with smaller hands may find that somewhat of an issue. I also found the unlock mechanism a bit difficult to work, but assume that will loosen up with use. I cannot find any mention as to country of origin on the item, packaging or literature, so must assume China.

I can’t count the times I’ve wanted to slice some nasty-big wire and wished I had a device that left me with a nice burr-free cut without a ton of prep or power outlet. These pliers allow me to do just that. The ratcheting function is a big part of that, allowing me to spread the force needed over a longer time, thereby focusing it on a smaller portion of the cut, which in the end lets me cut bigger and tougher materials without power tools (which also means no sparks and grit from a grinding wheel or noise and shavings from a portable band saw). There are spare blades available for when I eventually exceed the original blades’ Jedi Mandate, but until then, I’ll save this for those fewer projects when a clean mess-free cut is more critical. Not cheap, but an excellent tool for your toolbox. This thing is a 3-pound, 15-inch-long, made-in-Germany monster with super-comfy tactile hand grips; can't wait for that next 3-0 service wire that dares stand up to this. Etch your name on it; this quality tool will disappear from your toolbox faster than a liberal at a gun convention.

Nice tool if your in the trade. Replacable blade , i would recommend getting an extra blade when purchasing if you do lots of trade work . The rachet teeth are fine so it takes a little longer to get thru larger wire. The blade release lets you open the blades up for wire incertion. not spring loaded . Tried some cooper strand and aluminum (00) no issues, Handles have some leverage this tool is solid but a must if your working with larger wires.

This cutter has the ability to cut through ASCR wire which has a steel strand for aerial strength. They are also designed to cut straight copper wire (bare, THHN, XHHW, SOW, etc) and the various jackets on the wire. The same is for aluminum wire as well. The blades are extremely sharp, and this should be kept in mind. I do not know if they can be sharpened. The cable cutter makes a clean cut that does not require any additional finishing to be used in a lug, splice, or end fitting. I used it to cut 4 - #2 wires together. This can be accomplished if you tightly tape all runs together, and make the cut between the tape. This is a nice lightweight cutter for the size of cable and wire it can cut. The cuts I made went smoothly and barely a mark on the cutting blades. I wager there are hundreds of cuts left in the sharpness of the blades. Great tool.

This is one of those specialty tools, that despite their cost, you need to make the investment. If you work in a profession that uses 336mcm Linnet ACSR and triplex steel messenger cable or copper up to 400 MCM, as well as aluminum and multi-conductor cables up to 600 MCM, then this is the tool for your tool box! The ratchet action holds cable tight and allows straight cuts with minimum effort. My first use of this tool was to replace some battery cable ends on a tractor. It made quick work of cutting off the damaged ends, providing a clean cut for installation of new cable ends.
