About This Product

Klein Tools CL800 Electrical Tester is an automatically ranging true root mean squared (TRMS) digital clamp meter that measures AC/DC voltage, resistance, continuity, frequency, capacitance, and tests diodes via test-leads, and temperature via a thermocouple probe. It also features a Low Impedance (LoZ) mode for identifying and eliminating ghost or stray voltages. Klein Tools' Test and Measurement product line was exclusively designed from the ground up by electricians for electricians. Years of field research, combined with extensive input from electricians across America, inspired the development of meters and electrical testers loaded with innovative, time-saving features.

Questions & Answers

Can this device work as just a voltage and wiring tester, I have circuits that are not on a GFCI, I assume you have to push the test button for that. Otherwise does it work as a simple volt and wire tester?
BySep 9, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Yes. The Klein Tools Cat. No. RT250, GFCI Receptacle Tester with LCD, can be used on standard, non-GFCI three-wire 120V outlets to display voltage and identify common wiring conditions. The GFCI test button only needs to be pressed when testing the trip function of a GFCI device.

I would like to test for voltage fluctuations, will this device show live voltage when looking at the screen as the voltage drop happens, can you physically watch the display or does it record it, with a bulb adaptor can I see voltage in a light socket.

    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

The Klein Tools Cat. No. RT250, GFCI Receptacle Tester with LCD, displays the voltage and wiring condition of a three-wire, North American 120V electrical outlet. It is not designed to record or monitor voltage fluctuations. Because it is specified for use with three-wire electrical outlets only, it should not be used with a light-socket adapter.

How do you get the Screw Off the battery plate . It does not fit a Phillips screw driver
      ByAug 31, 2026
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

The battery compartment for Klein Tools Cat. No. RT250 GFCI Receptacle Tester with LCD is held in place with a Phillips screw. While it loosens, it does not come all of the way out and separate from the battery door so it doesn't get lost. To open the battery compartment, loosen the screw enough to pull the door off.

What does it mean if the green led blinks
          ByJun 25, 2026
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Klein Tools Cat. No. RT250, GFCI Receptacle Tester with LCD: If the green LED is blinking, it indicates that the outlet wiring is correct, but the outlet voltage is outside the tester's specified operating range. This can occur if the measured voltage is below 85V or above 135V. If the outlet voltage is within the normal operating range, the green LED should remain steadily illuminated when the wiring is correct.

I have this meter, it won't turn on anymore. Changed the batteries. Is there a fuse somewhere to replace?
                ByJan 24, 2026
                1 Answer |
                Answer This Question

None of Klein Tools' clamp meters have replacement fuses. If your item falls within our warranty period, please contact us for replacement. Otherwise, we recommend the updated CL810 600A AC/DC Auto-Ranging TRMS Clamp Meter with Worklight as a replacement.

So far loving this tester! We are currently building a house and needed an easy way to go thru our almost 100 outlets installed in our house. The display is easy to understand. Looks well built to last as well. I have many Klein Tools items and happy with them.

                  Careful with the anti-theft packaging
I bought this at Home Depot Chelsea in NYC today and the anti-theft packaging shattered as I cut it open and injured my hand. The outlet tester may be OK but this packaging is all I’m thinking about. The rack these were hung on had further anti-theft cabling and lock. Who would have thought an outlet tester would be such a target. Maybe that speaks to it's quality?

Such a solid and feature rich multimeter
This thing is rock solid. Makes fluke meters feel like toys. Definitely has a noticable rigidity and quality feel that most clamp meters lack. Flukes and ideal meter feel cheap. They measure fine and all but don't have the robust build that this does. Combine the build quality with the accuracy and rich feature set and you can't beat Klein for the money either.

Great meter with lots of features for the price
After reading the reviews from others and looking at the price for features this meter has I went with the Klein CL800 for my A/C and electrical jobs. So far it works great and the accuracy is fine for field work.

Ok meter, hard to read screen and no tone with NCV
Good feature set and feels good in the hand. I just hate how faded the screen gets at an angle or when I turn on the backlight. The last thing I want to do is have to stick my head in a box to view the screen or twist some wire. Also the NCV has no tone alarm, so strange. Normally I'm a big fan of Klein but I'm a pass on this tool. Fluke or Ideal clamp meters for me.

quick & easy. [HD needs to increase review limit]
voltage reading is my reason for getting this. a 2-3' extension makes perfect .. i added outlets & switches years ago & getting little shocks ,, but all is good finally with this tool . i suspect it was static carpet shocks. HD double write limit

This is a great tester with which you can test and diagnose variety of problems such as improper wiring, faulty grounds, timing for tripping of GFCI receptables and most importantly - voltage fluctuations. This is particularly helpful when you need to diagnose and service generators, flickering lights due to deteriorating connections on your main panel and so on. For the price, it is a must have in every service van and toolbelt and a very good addition to a home's repair kit.
