Has anyone had trouble with the spring becoming detached from these cutters? I've had 2 pair and the spring was lost on both. No replacement spring available, that I can find.

    Answer This Question

I had this happen to my well-used 10+ year old K1412 (which incidentally I bought on a spur of the moment from a Home Depot endcap display). I saw the answer from KleinTools to call them. So I did. They told me that there isn't a replacement part, but there is also a Lifetime Warranty on them. All I had to do was take it to a distributor and they would replace it. I asked for distributors near me and of course they mentioned Home Depot. I walked into my nearest Home Depot and yes they exchanged them for a brand new set. I'm happy.

Can this be used to strip the sheath after insertion of NM-B into box, or is it best to strip sheath before inserting into box?

Before. And be sure to leave 6+ inches of wire for termination.

Yes, this can be used to strip sheath.

              By|May 4, 2023

Don't strip the wire. Cut it (the sheath) using the correct notch where you want it and then insert into the box. After that just pull the sheath and it will slide right off.

If the NM-B is already stapled and/or clamped, I wouldn't recommend it, as you're just as likely as not to damage the insulation on the individual conductors, and possibly even the conductor itself. Either strip the sheath prior to inserting into the box - which is my preference - or pull it through and strip, then pull it back to where there's a 1/4" of sheathing left in the box and secure it.

yes, actually its best to run your romex then strip last.

The K1412 can be used to strip NM-B before or after insertion into a box.

The grips can be slid off with the right amount of pull. Inject some silicone caulk into the grip, reinsert, and let dry. I have had this happen in the past. We use them every day and have pulled many off, but never worn a grip out.

Klein backs their tools up with a lifetime warranty against failures that are product related as long as it isn’t normal wear and tear or misuse. Your issue doesn’t sound like either so they will probably repair the tool or refund the purchase price.

Be aware..brand new, defective and potentially dangerous. Check what you're buying first. Tool was not milled correctly leading to scored/partially cut wires that may (and initially did) go unnoticed. These may break during installation or even later.

I've bought many different companies wire stripers over the years, but this one is the best by far. I lent a new one to a contractor friend of mine and it was MIA for 6 months! He hands it back, obviously well used and goes... I bought 2, one as a spare, these things are great! Well... I tried my old one and it worked just fine ...so I didn't insist on him giving me his new spare! LOL... What I like about this stripper is you just put either 12 or 14 ga wire in, squeeze and pull off the outer jacket with the other hand, no extra work wiggling & trying to get the sleeve off like the other brands, just a nice clean cut every time! There are separate strippers for the inner 12 &14 ga wires too. The tool fits in your hand very comfortably as well and the rubber grips are nice & wide (see pic). It also comes with 2 bolt cutters for 6-32 & 8-32. The spring back handles feel just right & are easy to control and the quick lock feature keeps the tool safe in your pouch. I should mention that HD keeps these in the electrical section in the store and not in the regular tool area where the other wire strippers are kept. Every DIYer & pro should have one of these in their tool belt for sure!

I had always wanted a Romex stripper and Klein has a good reputation so I picked one up yesterday. The jars cut through the outer jacket and they don’t even nick the insulation on the conductors. They barely touched the paper under the jacket… The joint has no plan it at all. This tool is everything that is advertised.
