Lifting heavy items just got a lot easier with this block and tackle. I needed a way to lift a 200 lbs Pinewood Derby track into my garage rafters. Be very careful with heavy items. The hooks come in two styles. One with swivel and one without swivel. See photo. I have a slight preference for the one without swivel. The pulleys come in two different hook styles. Standard and gaurded. The website description is not useful. You need to look at the pictures to see the difference. The rope it comes with is a little short. I will be buying new rope soon. It was not spliced as shown in the product photos.. Hopefully my knot holds. I received this KLEIN TOOLS BLOCK AND TACKLE, SPLICED TO BLOCK 268 WITH HOOK 258 for free to write this review.

This is a kit consisting of two blocks, a hook and the line to run between the blocks. Two important things to note: it DOESN’T include any parts to attach the top block to anything to support the tackle, and the line ISN’T SPLICED to either block. Unless you are experienced at splicing line, I would recommend buying the product model with the line pre-spliced. In this case it would be 1802-30SSR rather than 1802-30S, which is only a few $ more. If you knot the line instead, make sure you use a knot that won’t slip! And you should be very careful to ensure that an attachment point is very securely attached (with several lag bolts for example – see my attached photo.) The components in this kit, including the line, are high quality and very sturdy. What is missing though are instructions. People experienced with block & tackles probably don’t need them, but first-time users should have some guidance in robust attachment to suspend it, how to splice (or tie a secure knot) to attach the line, limits on suspended weight, how to route the line through the blocks, and how to secure the end of the line when a heavy object is suspended. An instructional video on the Klein Tools website would be helpful. (Note: after experience with sailboat rigging, this wasn’t a problem for me.) My use for this product is to hoist the bag of soaked grain from the kettle for brew-in-the-bag home brewing. For a 5 gallon batch, up to 16 lb of grain could be used, which could absorb water weighing another 10 lb or so for a total of 26 lb. Double that for a 10 gal batch. After the “mash” brew step, the bag of grain needs to be lifted from the kettle, suspended, and rinsed to extract as much as possible from the grain. I used to have to lift the bag with one hand while sliding a grating on top of the kettle and let the bag settle on it. With the hoist I attach the bag to its hook, pull it up and secure the line so that I can rinse it while suspended. Much easier to do single-handed, particularly for large or stronger batches! See photos.

The Klein tools block and tackle is a real quality product just like the rest of the tools that Klein tools makes. It is heavy duty and overbuilt to take years of service, the 3/8 rope that comes with it slides around the pullies with ease and makes lifting one hundred pounds very simple. The pullies have hooks on both of them and it comes with an extra hook that you can attach to what ever you are hoisting to make hook up very simple. I had extra wheel chairs that were always in the way so I used the block and tackle to hoist them up in the rafters where I secured them and made room on the floor. The Block and Tackle will also make simple work of installing meter loops or hoisting conduit to free up a hand.

I have an occasional need for a block and tackle, now I have one. I have not had a chance to use it because I have been iced in, but, I put it together and played with it indoors for a couple days. A Block and Tackle consists of the "Block" [actually two Blocks] with two [or more] pulleys on each one, plus the "Tackle", which is the rope [or wire] that connects them. When it has two pulleys on each block, it is known as a Twofold Purchase. These are rated for 750 pounds, but are marked 'Not for human support', go figure. Not hard to figure out the use, or how to attach the rope, which is twisted instead of braded, so I will likely replace the rope. The only thing I do not get, as it comes with no instructions, is why the block that the rope is attached to has an additional "hook" [?] on one of the side plates.

The Klein model #1802-30S is a double block, double sheave with rope assembly that comes with the Klein #259 swivel neck forged flat anchor “J” hook. This block and tackle come with 25 feet of 3/8” diameter nylon rope and the entire assembly has a 750-pound maximum load rating. Each pulley block has two sheaves (two pulley wheels) each and each sheave uses a bronze bushing to smoothly rotate and minimize friction. The two pulley blocks are each 1 5/8” in diameter and are made of light weight galvanized steel and aluminum alloy metal. Each block has a 1/2” opening, spring-loaded snap hook with its nose lengthened to extend over the latch. One block also comes with a built-in snubbing hook, when engaged, to conveniently hold the line and load stationary as well as a fixed 1/2” becket anchor hole to terminate one end of the assembly line. When the line is weaved through the four sheaves, the total block and tackle assembly measures six feet long. When the included #259 flat swivel 2” wide “J” hook is used on the fixed pully block and connected to the attachment point, both pullies and its related load, have the ability to be turned 360 degrees in relation to fixed attachment point. When pulling the rope down through the fixed position pulley and other pulley block is in a moveable load position, there is 4 to 1 mechanical advantage in lifting the load. For example, when using this assembly to lift a 500 weight and accounting for pully friction, you will only expend approximately175 pounds of energy because of the 4 to 1 mechanical advantage. When the assembly is used in the reverse position with the block having the becket hole placed on the load position and the line being pulled up instead of down, the mechanical advantage is increased to 5 to 1 thereby making it even a little bit easier to lift the weight. It should be noted that this block and tackle assembly is not an occupational protective device and therefore is not rated for and should not be used for human support. This block and tackle did not come with manufacturer’s instructions and therefore, I had to check the Internet for the proper alignment of the blocks and line. I must say, the Klein block and tackle is truly a professional quality tool that will provide the user with a mechanic advantage in lifting heavy objects. Some examples of practical uses for this block and tackle include lifting a riding lawnmower to change the cutting blade, hoisting or lowering a bucket of tools or equipment, lifting cement blocks, removing a heavy motor from a piece of equipment, etc. All in all, this block and tackle product is great for use by electrical workers, hunters, farmers, and the do-it-yourselfer in order to lift heavy objects using a mechanical advantage in a quick, safe and efficient manner. This is really a handy tool to have available when dealing with heavy loads!
