They recommend to unplug everything because it could cause an error nothing in the book says it could damage anything. It makes sense because it could cause a voltage drop on the circuit and that's probably what the unit is detecting or part of it.

can i find cables behind the walls?. apart to finding breakers. thank you

It will not trace wires behind walls. I just tried it. No way to find a wire behind wall. OTOH, if you are tracing a wire in the attic or crawlspace, it can work. First, make sure the wire insulation is intact. Second, wear insulating gloves. If you can touch the outer insulation directly with the probe, you can get a signal. It works about 95% when the tip of the instrument touches the outer insulation of the wire. In circuit breaker mode it is also a bit finicky. It works best if the tip touches the circuit breaker directly. Again, wear insulating gloves. There is a sweet spot on surface of my breakers centered on the sticker. If I touch the lever, it might not register. Distance of the circuit matters. The outlets 5 feet from the breaker box were easy to discriminate. The 100 foot run from the other side of the house had a much weaker signal, naturally.

I don't know how it would. The signal coming back to the panel is on the hot leg.

Not much. They both work the same.

Does this work on dead circuits

Asked by Skip May 28, 2019

Answers

No. It can only identify a breaker if that circuit is energized. The transmitter plugs into a powered outlet and sends a signal to the receiver(the tool you scan the breaker box with). If the power is of the transmitter can't transmit as it's powered by a closed, energized circuit.

I really like this gadget. Every place I've lived, the notations at the breaker box have never been complete nor reliable. I changed an outlet for my cousin several months ago, and for her huge house I tried no fewer than 8 breakers trying to find the right one. WIth this tool, you simply plug one end into the outlet, and at the breaker box scan the breakers to identify the right one. Easy peasy... maybe, baby. The identification isn't exact. It's a best guess based on the strength of the signal as you point the tester at each one. It's fairly accurate, but I'm hesitant to take it at face value. Still, it's a HUGE improvement over hit and miss. But here's the thing... and why I ding it. The description reads."The Klein Tools ET310 is a digital circuit breaker finder used to locate the correct circuit breaker in a panel to which an electrical outlet or fixture is connected." It says NOTHING about the fact that in order to test for a fixture, you need to buy additional accessories. If you look at my attached picture from the packaging, the adapter to test a fixture is two-prong while the Finder is three-prong. So you need to get a three- to two-prong adapter, then the plug to socket adapter, in a ridiculous series that will not fit every situation. In my humble opinion, everything should be included to make it a good value for the price. Despite the tech of this FInder, I still relied on my Klein sensor to make sure the power was actually off. So silly.

(What's this)
As always, Klein puts out a quality tool and guarantees them with confidence. This Digital Circuit Tester is a fantastic tool to have if you have a circuit breaker panel all messed up. The prior owners of my home just guested which breaker shut off which area of the house. Boy, what a mess!. With this gem of a tool I can put the transmitter in the socket, turn it on and go to the panel in my garage. The long part or Receiver will sound with a beep, light up and give you the voltage it's finding. As you see on the transmitter, there's a series of codes. These tell you if the circuit's grounded, open or state that the electricity is in and it runs all this on a 9v battery.. You can't go wrong with this tool. It's very reasonably priced at Home Depot, has a great guarantee from Klein & is accurate, a major importance when you're working with electricity. You want to be right!

Almost a waste of money, but not quite.
A very well constructed product and built to take a beating! Like being thrown across the room kind of beating. This particular technology is flawed. More often than not I got false positives. It's transmission signal must be inductively transfer to other nearby conductors thus causing several false positives. The receiver doesn't seem to "learn" reliably. Possibly my technique is flawed, but more likely my circuit circumstances are not cooperating with the product engineers. It seems that no matter how many attempts using different techniques, I got unreliable results. Also, it gets worse when the branch circuits are longer and complex. The idea was to save time by locating the breaker without having to turn off multiple breakers in searching for the one. There was almost no point in making this purchase, except for that handy little outlet checker with the ground fault test button. It is useful when checking wiring integrity and seeing if there is a functioning GFI somewhere upstream in the circuit.

Klein ET310 Still need to do it the old way ...
I have a 3500 sq ft home with 40, mostly unlabeled, breakers. After five years of the hunt and peck method of locating breakers where I needed to perform work, I decided to buy the tool to do the job properly by mapping the entire box in one day. I knew the Klein name and reputation and decided on the ET310. I am well familiar with the need to clear any memory between searches with the reset. However, either it is too sensitive or, not sensitive enough, or for other reasons, I was only able to positively identify about 65% of my searches. Unreliable searches turned up multiple breakers as possible "hits" with a solid signal. This made those searches impossible to discern a location due to identical signal strength at multiple breakers. This results in the old fashioned yelling between two people (wife), "Is it off?" while throwing breakers. So, whats the point??? I could never trust that it would give me the right breaker enough that I would be able to rely on it to then perform work on that branch without the old yelling method. I really wanted it to work but, alas, not to be.
