Frankly, the very positive reviews are a curiosity to me. I suppose if all you want to do is verify a live or dead circuit and/or confirm if line voltage is (roughly) 120 VAC or 240 VAC, then this tester would be adequate. However, you will not be able to determine the exact voltage--only the approximate. For example, let's say you have an AC generator and you want to know if it is putting out 110 votes or 130 volts, all you will see is a light indicating that you have 120V. I bought this as a gift for someone to check their 1.5 volt and 9 volt used batteries to determine if they still have a usable charge. Nearly depleted 1.5 volt batteries still happily light up the test light which suggests those batteries still have usable life. A true tester (aka meter) would tell you what the exact voltage is, not whether you are simply in the ballpark. You know if you are reading 1.4 volts or less that it is time to replace the 1.5V battery. In short, you can read the voltage label on the batteries and glean about as much information as the go/no go lights. Unless a battery is nearly dead this tester will indicate it is in good shape. For true diagnostics, you need a meter, not a series of on/off lights. It is misleading that it says it includes a low battery indicator. That indicator is for the internal tester batteries, not for what you want to check, and it only flashes if the internal batteries are low..

This Klein Voltage Tester is a very handy little tool to have in your electrical pouch. It is compact, is easy to read and convenient to handle. It fits in your shirt pocket for quick access. I like the slim design and the quality appears to be very good and rugged. The test leads are short and have caps which are handy when doing circuit board tests. Get one of these for your electrical kit.

This Klein model ET 40 AC and DC voltage tester is very compact and easy to use. It has a hardwired set of 9 inch test leads (see picture) which will fit most any test situation. The leads tips store right in the sides of the tester (see picture), clipping right into the side of the tester. The tester can easily be stored in a small space or fit into your pocket or belt because the body of the tester is only 5 inches in length and it has a handy clip to secure the tester (see picture). It has fixed voltage ranges which will show an LED display when the voltage reaches that level (see picture) as opposed to a specific digital voltage readout value. For some DIY applications, this is just the right tool to use. It runs on two 1.5V AAA batteries, and the compartment they are in is secured by a screw so no worries about it all coming apart if dropped (see picture)! This is very a rugged tool. I highly recommend it for situations where you frequently work with certain voltage levels such as in power supply or automotive system testing (12V) as well as around the house with standard 120 or 240 volt lines.

Device is not easy to use for determining if AA or AAA batteries are still good. Also, I tried it with a AA battery which I know was weak and it tested as good with this device.
