Questions & Answers

Why is the meter giving the max wet reading when I have no leak or water penetration for vinyl flooring over concrete slab in my kitchen ? I put it on masonry setting since there is no subfloor only a slab under the vinyl flooring.
ByApr 30, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Klein Tools Cat. No. ET140, Pinless Moisture Meter may show high readings on vinyl flooring because it can detect up to 3/4-inch deep and pick up moisture or adhesive in the concrete below. For best results, compare with a known dry area; adding a small spacer between the tool and the flooring may also improve accuracy.

Will this meter measure moisture content in a concrete garage floor?
    ByApr 29, 2026
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

The Klein Tools Cat. No. ET140, Pinless Moisture Meter detects relative moisture in materials like drywall, masonry, hardwood, and softwood. It can be used on concrete (masonry), but provides relative readings only, intended for comparison and indication of moisture, not exact moisture content.

What setting would you use to measure under laminate flooring?
      ByApr 5, 2026
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Klein Tools Cat. No. ET140, Pinless Moisture Meter should be set to Hardwood mode when measuring under laminate flooring, as laminate is a high-density wood-based material. Please note the meter has a maximum sensing depth of approximately 3/4", so readings may reflect moisture in the subfloor beneath the laminate.

Would this detect moisture underneath tile?
        ByFeb 16, 2026
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

While it is not designed to be used for tile, the Klein Tools Cat. No. ET140 Pinless Moisture Meter may produce some results when used for this application. The recommendation for this use would be to use the masonry setting to provide a relative reading on a known dry area as a baseline and compare to a suspect area. However, depending on the underlayment used, there may be a false positive that will max out the meter if there is metal mesh or similar material underneath the tile. Another non-invasive option to check for moisture would be a thermal imager.

Yes, Klein Tools Cat. No. ET140 Pinless Moisture Meter can detect moisture content up to 3/4-Inch deep. With a plaster wall, you should get a baseline by measuring a known dry area to establish a "normal" reading and then compare that reading to suspected damp areas.

Will this detect moisture inside firewood if the surface is damp?
              ByJan 3, 2026
              1 Answer |
              Answer This Question

Klein Tools Cat. No. ET140 Pinless Moisture Meter may register moisture if the outside of the firewood is wet (rain, snow, condensation), even if the core is relatively dry. A tip to get the most reliable result is wipe the surface dry, split the log and measure the core, taking multiple readings and averaging them.

Not Accurate at All - Woodworkers Beware!
Do not buy if you want accurate measurements. I bought this unit for woodworking and moisture detection within my home. The accuracy on this is +/- 4% for wood and "Relative" for drywall and masonry. What does that even mean? The pictures are from a 70F garage maintained at 45-50% humidity. As you can see, the cheap meter that uses pins is pretty much spot on in terms of expected moisture content. This is on a softwood bench that has been maintained at this humidity for > 1 year. From the Manual: Accuracy: Wood: ± 4% Drywall & Masonry: Relative readings

Not as Accurate as Pin Model
I'll start by saying that I primarily use this for wood working. I really want to like this, I have other Klein tools that I love and this sort of misses the mark. I bought this because I didn't want to damage the wood I was using with pins, and this looked great for that. What I found was that the Klein was regularly off 2-3% vs my pinned model. I settled with 3 stars though is because it's consistent, so I can still use this to check when the moisture level has settled and stopped decreasing.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Need to keep my wood dry and klien got my back. I build cabinets and this lets me monitor the moisture content in the wood, and it works great.

Here is a product that lives up to the Klein reputation for quality and utility. This moisture meter measures the moisture in drywall, masonry, softwood and hardwood. I have used it to measure moisture levels after repairing drywall, painting and applying mortar to concrete block. Using the meter to measure the moisture content provided information on when I could apply a second coat of paint, mortar and drywall mud. It has a sturdy outer case and an easy to read clear display. There are three buttons, an on button, a mode button that changes the material to be measured, and a hold button to save readings. The screen measures 1 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches.

This is a great moisture meter and I find it accurate. It is pinless which avoids the little damage a pinned meter can cause. The settings are great: drywall, masonry, hardwood (oak, maple, etc.) and softwood (pine, poplar, etc.). The moisture meter is very easy to use, I didn't even have to look at the directions. It comes with a 9v battery so you can get it started quickly. You can easily hold a reading too. It measures as accurate as my pinned meter although I find the pine better for some jobs, like inspecting the top of fascia boards under roof shingles. One thing I did find odd with this moisture meter is it considered some moist drywall near a window of mine (@ 25%) as dry. One downside I found to this meter is it does not have a loop/lasso for holding or hanging it in the workshop.

I had never used a moisture meter before. I'm not sure what others are like, but this one couldn't be easier to use. I did know I didn't want a pin-style meter for my purpose. Found a discolored spot on the ceiling. Bought this to check before I started cutting holes. The readout was clear that it was a wet spot. A few inches over, not wet.
