Try placing the sensor flat against the surface then slowly back it away about an eighth of an inch for the drywall as metal behind the drywall can interfere, as for the guitar you can do the same but since you know it is air behind it any high reading is bad

Can this be used to test moisture on firewood or logs? If so how to use it for that function?

It is not it's intended function. The penetration level is 3/4", I believe. IMO not enough depth to test logs, even split ones. By the time you get to 3/4" you looking at kindling wood.

What setting should be used on the meter to check moisture in fiberglass boats?

Asked by HB November 2, 2020

Answer

The ET140 Moisture Meter is not calibrated for fiberglass; you will need to test to see what gives you the best response for a comparative value test.

When using the ET140 on concrete, make sure the meter is set to masonry mode before measuring. If the concrete is drying, time might be the issue. If measuring the moisture in an existing slab, find a known dry source and measure as a comparison value. Please note: the meter is not calibrated for tile, and only can be used for a comparative measurement. For further assistance please contact Klein Tools Customer Service at 1-800-553-4676.

Answer

The ET140 Moisture Meter is designed to detect moisture in drywall, masonry, hard and softwood. It is not calibrated for plaster and will not provide an “exact” value of the moisture content, but it can be used to do a comparative value test. To perform a comparative value test with this meter, first measure an area of the material that you know is dry and record the value. Then measure the area you suspect has moisture and compare this value to the previous measured dry spot value.

Here is a product that lives up to the Klein reputation for quality and utility. This moisture meter measures the moisture in drywall, masonry, softwood and hardwood. I have used it to measure moisture levels after repairing drywall, painting and applying mortar to concrete block. Using the meter to measure the moisture content provided information on when I could apply a second coat of paint, mortar and drywall mud. It has a sturdy outer case and an easy to read clear display. There are three buttons, an on button, a mode button that changes the material to be measured, and a hold button to save readings. The screen measures 1 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches.

This is a great moisture meter and I find it accurate. It is pinless which avoids the little damage a pinned meter can cause. The settings are great: drywall, masonry, hardwood (oak, maple, etc.) and softwood (pine, poplar, etc.). The moisture meter is very easy to use, I didn't even have to look at the directions. It comes with a 9v battery so you can get it started quickly. You can easily hold a reading too. It measures as accurate as my pinned meter although I find the pine better for some jobs, like inspecting the top of fascia boards under roof shingles. One thing I did find odd with this moisture meter is it considered some moist drywall near a window of mine (@ 25%) as dry. One downside I found to this meter is it does not have a loop/lasso for holding or hanging it in the workshop.
