Can this product be used in basement walls?

I’ve done some frame rot repairs (from water damage) in a finished basement wall, but completely forgot to put the insulation back in before putting up drywall and completely finishing everything. The cement has been sealed and there’s no more leak. There are only 4 bays to be filled, so I’ll only need one bag.
Asked by: TMLo
Hi, you prolly could but it will start to settle after awhile so the top piece would lose its insulation as it settles.

This product does have a few pluses, non-flammable and guaranteed not to settle. The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is the functionality of the blower. I constantly had to move the stuff around so it worked, I literally was unable to leave the machine for more than 30 seconds without it clogging up. In fact my hired help quite on me with 7 bags left to go (after 5 hours of being in the attic, I can't blame him). When I returned the blower I mentioned that the right side paddles did not work properly and I had to put my hands in the hopper repeatedly to get insulation to move through. Staff didn't want to hear what I had to say because they recently replaced the motor on the blower I rented (mention the replaced motor THREE times). I finally said it was a complementary rental and I wasn't seeking any restitution, that they should look at the paddles on the right side and left the store. I love Home Depot and will always be a customer, but sometimes a little customer service would be nice. Now what to do with the 7 bags of unused insulation?

The product, once installed, worked just fine (after all, it's just blown-in insulation). But the machine that is used to chop up and blow was a royal pain in the neck! We had trouble starting it and had to run to the Home Depot for counsel. It turns out that unless the top half of the machine is very precisely mated to the bottom half it will not start. Once working, the machine was constantly clogging - I had to stop the machine, take apart, clear the clog, then put it back together and re-start. I have used the competition's equipment (Atticat) which used to be stocked at Home Depot and it is MUCH smoother and easier to deal with. After reading so many positive reviews I was looking forward to a pleasant experience but that was not the case.

Our attic desperately needed to be topped off since the original insulation was not installed to Zone 5 spec (barely came up to the top of the ceiling joists, and settled below in most places). I like that it is made of recycled material, the insulation is noncombustible in nature, and especially the non-settling feature. Settled insulation wrecks its original R-value, and you start to lose too much in heating and cooling costs, not to mentioned decreased comfort. We don't have any storage in our attic, so putting this in should give us a very long time of proper R-value and a more comfortable home. One other note - definitely rent the machine even if you don't need 10+ bags, and also get a 5-foot length of 3-inch PVC pipe to help you get into the far corners of your attic.

My wife and I installed R49 insulation in 1,200 SF attic in about 3.5 hours. She loaded the machine while I blew the insulation the attic. The insulation and machine were easy to use for any home owner that is slightly handy. My wife is not at all and she was able to load the insulation with ease. The only issue we ran into was the instructions told us to insert half a bag in insulation at a time. We found that would clog the machine, so we could only insert 1/4 bag at a time. The insulation went much further than we expected. Our attic had no insulation and we were able to archive R49 with 20 bags for 1,200 SF. For first timers we recommend blowing insulation in the attic early in the morning while the attic has time to cool all night.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Needed to top up the fill in my attic. The original builder insulation has compacted over the year... Needed to top up the fill in my attic. The original builder insulation has compacted over the years. Picked up some eco fill fiberglass and it was easy to work with. Rented a machine to blow the insulation into the ceiling. Over the last few days since I blew the insulation in, the loft has remained. (This is important as part of the insulation value is the air pockets created when blowing in the insulation). EcoFill has a degree of dust but seemed better than other insulations from what I remember years ago when I last worked with insulation. I did not end up with any itchy eyes or arms. But that is most likely because of the precautionary protection I used (and that you should use) when working with fiberglass insulation. The name says it all, its small pieces of glass and you end up with slivers of glass on yourself if you are not careful It is compressed, so don't open it until you are ready.

Extremely difficult to install because Home Depot's "free" rental blower is incompatible with the product. Unlike the AttiCat system, the compressed ECOFILL must be separated into (about) one foot sections and feed very slowly into the blower. The worker in the attic will be in the heat about 4 times longer than with the AttiCat. We will NOT purchase this product again.
