Is the silicone sealant the same thing as silicone grease?

Asked by: Arcwist
no they are not the same, sealant is a glue product and grease is lubrication

Follow-up to "Can an EasyFix Flush Valve Repair Kit be replaced"

Thanks to GENIUS for the fast reply. I have been considering using the EasyFix Flush Valve Repair kit but first I would like to know what to expect long term. I assume that the black seating surface from the repair kit will eventually wear and cease to function properly just as the original seat has failed. A 5 year guarantee is mentioned on the front of the repair kit packaging but a statement on the back mentions only free replacement of the flapper. Does this mean that Korky expects the black seating surface from the repair kit will never fail? Korky does not recommend removal of the black seating surface. Does this mean that it CANNOT be removed and replaced even if it fails?
Asked by: JMiles
Yes it can be replaced. Pry the old seat off carefully. Clean the old silicone off with your fingernail or pocket knife and install the new kit as per instructions.

Can an old 2 inch EasyFix Flush Valve Repair Kit be replaced with a new one?

If, after years of use, the 2 inch EasyFix Flush Valve Repair Kit begins to fail due to wear or damage to the black flush valve seat, can the old black seat be removed and replaced with one from a new repair kit? This may really be a question about how the silicone sealant will behave after being in place for an extended time.

Do these come in 3inch diameter.

I have a Glacier Bay 1.28 gpf toilet. It is leaking at the Flush Valve. I did replace the flush cap but it still is leaking.Added some food color into the tank and saw that it had leaked into the toilet bowl. I am looking to find a 3inch diameter Flush valve replacement kit for this toilet, seems like they are hard to find as the ones in the store all said for 2inch replacement kits???. So do they make 3inch for this toilet. I also came across a Korky Flush Valve repair kit but again only in 2inch, was wonderiing if they make one that is for a 3inch Flush valve, and if so could I try this as a possible fix. Thanks.

You need to get one of the 3 inch replacements. Something like this may work: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Korky-3-in-Adjustable-Toilet-Tank-Flapper-3060CM/202183799

Having fixed the toilet that was noticeably leaking from the tank into the bowl between flushes, I’m going to make this change on the other one, too. One thing: It takes 15 minutes for the silicone sealant that holds the wider seat in place to cure. So if you’re doing more than one toilet at once, yourself time to finish the first before you start the second. You don’t want all your toilets out of commission while the silicon cures!

The toilet had started to turn on and run for ten seconds every hour or so to refill the tank. I bought this product because it has the black seat. My experience in leaking toilets is there is an uneven seating problem that no flapper will cure. By securing the seat with silicone the flap can rest secure and tight against the black seat, preventing the leak. I had to move the chain clasp down a few links because the chain was too long and the handle end would have hit the top of the toilet before lifting the flap. The clasp easily came off and went back on without much effort. I installed it a week ago and my water does not turn on anymore until I flush the toilet. The concept is simple and straightforward so there is very little to dislike in this product. There was plenty of silicone so I saved the excess for that next little repair or seal I may need.

If you use this product you will still need to buy and pack additional plumbers putty around the inside and the outside of the ring without getting any on the sealing surfaces to stop the leaks. This is another untested design that doesn’t work reliably under realistic conditions of use.

Installed in a couple of minutes, dried to use in less than a half-hour. Stopped the extremely slow leak that I had been experiencing over the last few months. Haven't heard the water tank re-fill by itself in the last 10 days (since installed). VERY pleased with this product!

The toilet in my guest bathroom had a slow leak that persisted for months, even after replacing the flapper. This fixed it. The tube of sealant that comes with this said to let it dry for 15 minutes after application, but I found it still hadn't set after half an hour. I let it dry overnight.

Had to wire it to the two horizontal posts with dental floss to prevent both hinges (holes in the rubber) from coming loose during a flush. Should be made out of harder/stiffer rubber, so the hinge holes will stay in place and not bend off the hinge posts.

This doesn't happen every time, but if the rubber was harder I think it would line up every time.
