What does it mean, must be vented through a window? Does it mean you cannot just put it in a room, plug it in and turn it on? Point of getting a protable air conditioner for us would be NOT to have to vent it through a window. If we have to do that, why not get a window air conditioner? Please explain. Thanks.

Physics. The heat has to go somewhere. If you dump the heat in the same room with the cold the room doesn’t change temperature.

Does the window venting work on a awning window which opens out and is 23 inches by 23 inches?
Asked by: KD
I also have a window with a 23" inner dimension. From that, there is another 1/2" loss from grooves that hold the screen in place. Not certain 23" part can fit snugly. I had a similar problem with a window mounted unit and it took some patience to get an OK fit. So I am buying this unit soon, and when it arrives, the very first thing I will do is fit the vent into the space. If it doesn't work, I'll take the whole thing back to the store before I unpack it further. A lousy 1/4 inch can wreck an otherwise good choice. Engineers who design these should factor in that a 24" window is a NOMINAL dimension, not what exists in the real world.

Asked by: Horacio
The unit sits on the floor in the room and a hose goes to the window kit. You have to have a window that opens as a slider or hung window. The kit is just to attach the hose to and seal off the rest of the window to prevent cool air from going out and hot air from getting in.

14,000 BTU (10,000 BTU, DOE) Portable Air Conditioner, Dual Inverter, Quiet, Energy Eff, Wi-Fi with LCD Remote in White is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 71.

So this is unit is quite powerful and remarkably quiet, in that it produces significantly lower decibels than any of the other four portable ACs I've owned. But the type of noise it makes is different -- where for other portable ACs the most noticeable sound is a sort of rattling, with this unit what's more noticeable is the the high-pitched whine of the compressor. It's so high-pitched that I found it almost painful to hear. I returned the first one of these I bought thinking it might be a one-off defect, but the second unit I tried had the same issue. Ultimately I think the value of this unit turns entirely on how sensitive one is to that high-pitched whine.

I am not experiencing the high-pitched sound that I see in a few other reviews. The unit does an overall excellent job in providing cool to cold air in a rather large space. The auto-swing feature helps to circulate the coolness throughout the room. LG was literally the only maker I could find that had a window kit that was large enough, 60" max, I need 58 of them for my window. Anything more needed, probably going to have to find some sort of speciality item. Most other makers cap at 46 to 54 inches. This uint is a tad pricey in comparison to some other brands, overall, I believe the extra is worth it. LG had made a nice quality unit that works well and I would recommend and purchase again within hesitation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cool features! I recently purchased this portable AC unit in preparation for the unbearable heat of the California Summer. So far, it works like a charm! My husband is more of a tech person so he really enjoys all the cool features this AC has to offer. I’m usually the person that gets frustrated with tech, but even this ac is easy for me to control which is awesome. It cools my entire house within minutes. And it’s not as loud as other ac units which is a plus. I especially enjoy the timer feature where it turns off by itself because, let’s face it, we all forget to turn things off after a while. It’s unique look is also a great touch. The last AC I owned had the vent exposed which wasn’t too great because it would collect dust fast or there was a rick if things accidentally falling into it, but this one has a cover that opens/ closes the vents when the machine is on/off. It also moves up and down as the machine is on so that it spreads the cool air around the area (and faster) instead of just shooting it in one direction. And I can’t forget about the coolest feature so far- it connects to WiFi and your phone!! Definitely worth every penny! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beware of the high pitch, tinnitus-like squeal I've rarely been this torn about a product. It's an amazing portable AC unit that looks great, was easy to install and, most importantly to me, saves energy by using the DC motor. I want to love it but can't: the problem is the scorchingly high-pitched squeal it emits when running. I'm not sure if LG has a repair method or fix for it but it's to the point that the CIA may use it as part of their enhanced interrogation techniques. I don't think I have above average hearing but the drilling, whiny tone pokes holes through my brain. I did a fair bit of research and a number of websites listed this as the the best (or one of the best) units money could buy. I'm quite disappointed that an otherwise spectacular unit could be disappointing and, ultimately, unusable--at least for me. Then again, I could perhaps wear my noise-cancelling headphones in the house to mitigate the tone but then I wouldn't be able to hear much of anything at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from quiet, well designed, sleek, smart DISCLOSURE: I've owned this unit less than a week (my friend owns one as well, which I helped set up) so I can't comment on the long-term reliability, only functionality compared to other units I've owned or used. 【TL;DR】 This is about as good as it gets in portable air-conditioners - and that's quite good. 【INTRO & BACKGROUND】 I've owned several "window shaker" type air-conditioners over the last decade, and one other portable. Window models are slightly more efficient (because the "hot section" sits entirely outside) but are extremely inconvenient to install unless your building is designed with a port for them. Many allow "street noise" through, nevermind being rather noisy themselves. Most portable A/C units use generic "guts" and just replace the outer cosmetic shell. This LG is different, which I'll explain in the pros and cons below. I'm going to start "from the ground up" because LG's design team really hit a home-run with this one. 【FEATURES & PROS+】 • The "smooth gliding caster wheels" are extremely durable, easy-rolling and swiveling - many portables use cheap, "office chair" type wheels that bend, break, and clog with hair. • There's a drain plug centered near the bottom of the unit and connected to a 2-pint water tank. The device evaporates water through the exhaust hose but the tank acts as a buffer if it can't remove enough. The device will shut-down if the tank fills up and will send a warning, including one via the smartphone/tablet app, to empty the tank before resuming operation. • the included vent panels store in a slot built onto the back of the unit - this is a MASSIVE improvement over every other portable on the market where you need extra storage space (or a roll of duct tape) to store accessories • the included window vent panels are thick, reinforced, high quality, non-brittle plastic (ABS or PVC perhaps?) and there are enough of them to cover wide windows. In fact, in my apartments with average windows, there was enough paneling to install in TWO separate windows. I cut an extra port in one of the panels with a Dremel routering jig (see pics) and now I don't have to move the exhaust panel, just the unit. • the exhaust hose points VERTICALLY from the back of the unit - another massive improvement over other brands in which the hose exits horizontally - less clearance is needed, and the hose stores right on the unit • dual-inverter compressor - in short: the compressor motor can run at different speeds which makes it not only more energy efficient but MUCH quieter, especially on start up. Instead of the *CLUNK...RATTLE* on compressor start/stop that gives box units the "window shaker" nickname, this one quietly spools up and down, making it great for bedrooms. • smartphone/tablet app monitoring & control - you can check room temperature, check the unit's status, and fully control it from anywhere in the world. Once connected to the network, the unit can be controlled via app even when you're away from home. (you may need the geeky-kid-next-door to make sure your home network doesn't block this) • app allows for scheduled start and stop, as well as delayed ON/OFF 【QUIRKS & CONS-】 • the remote control is anemic and very sensitive to direction - I've practically given up on it in favour of the smartphone app, and the on-unit control panel (no biggie - I think LG assumed people would use the smart app or panel and the remote was an after-thought) It does stand upright, and comes with a wall bracket, though. • The app is slightly quirky: there's a lot of wasted space that results in having to scroll, and click "expand" tabs. I'd like to see this improved by having all controls on the same screen - simple sliders or radio buttons instead of MASSIVE sections would solve this. • Unit requires a 2.4GHz WiFi network with WPA/WPA2 security (doesn't support WEP, not that you should be using WEP security in 2019). Once connected, the app will find it no matter where you are. (5GHz WiFi or on cellular data) • No ECO/AUTO mode - HOWEVER... the "DRY" mode seems to function exactly as you'd expect an ECO/AUTO mode to: it still uses the compressor to cool the air/dehumidify, but runs the fan on low only, then shuts the entire unit off when the target temperature is reached. 【Conclusion】 Despite the quirks, all of the pros of this unit (smart accessory storage, wheels, low noise level, smartphone monitoring & control anywhere) make it a winner for me, and my friend who owns the same unit. While on my bus commute home, from my smartphone, I can check my apartment temperature, command the air-conditioner to power on, and set a target temperature. I get home and the apartment is habitable. An aside: the smarts and dual-inverter, quiet compressor in this unit are available in LG window models, as well as split systems. If your home has a port for a window type, that might be something to consider. Top marks - this is as good as it gets in portable air-conditioners.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Loud It's still too cool outdoors to tell whether this is an effective cooling solution, but it is *loud*. Given it's high price tag, I would expect better quality, but there is a very loud high pitched noise that comes from the unit whenever the compressor is on. According to LG's website, this is "normal". It is in no way 44dB, as stated in the description.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It really is very quiet especially on low. Better than any other AC I have used by a long shot. G... It really is very quiet especially on low. Better than any other AC I have used by a long shot. Good for sleep or watching TV in the same room. There is a slight whirl (not really a whine in my opinion) at certain speeds but my aging ears only pick it up at certain angles. Not a big deal at all sitting 8 ft away and I hate noises. Like other portable ACs, the vent duct hose eventually warms up and leaks heat into the room which kind of works against the AC's cooling power. Like other portable ACs, the fix is simply a duct sleeve to insulate the duct to the window. Not pretty, but it makes all portable ACs I've used more effective. The duct tubing on this unit is better than most but not really an air tight seal on the window. Duct sleeve taped over also mitigates that. Wifi and phone control works surprisingly well but no ability to integrate with IFTTT or SmartThings etc. Kinda of a waste of the wifi feature. Would have given it 5 stars if it could integrate. Cools well and fast on high, maintains decent on low, but only used on one 80+ degree day so far so can't report for high humidity very hot days yet. The dual rotor compressor makes this unit very efficient. But I think you would only reclaim your money compared to a cheaper but less efficient model if you used the unit all summer for several years. So value is subject to your use case. For me, quiet means everything, so this unit is worth the extra cost without thinking twice. I work that into my value equation.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from high-pitch noise kills the fun I bought it a few days ago only because it was advertised to be quite 44dB in sleep mode. However, it is not even close. I have my own noise meter and the the measurement did not go below 50dB. I am just wondering how guys from LG made these measurements! Moreover, this high-pitch noise makes you turn it off. Horrible sound. There is no way anybody can sleep in the room when AC is on. And lastly, window installation kit is too short. Where I am supposed to find an extension for it?
