does it need to be vented?

does it need to be vented?
Asked by: Bob
Yes. Otherwise it just put cool air out the top and hot air out the back. It will actually make the area warmer. Just like trying to cool a room by opening up the door on your refrigerator.

The vent hose gets very hot. Since this hot hose is exposed to the interior, it radiates heat back into the room. That appears to be self defeating as the AC now has to work against the normal room temperature AND the radiant heat emitted from the hose. Is this radiant heat from the hose normal?

How problematic is it to use as a stand alone with/out vent to exterior?
Asked by: pat
Optimally, you want to vent it outside. They recommend not to extend the vent duct they provide (5'). I chose to cool off a small interior room of my house and let the hot air blow into the other rooms of the house. Later I bought some extra duct work and vented it to the nearest window, and that worked just fine too.

Customer Reviews

14,000 BTU (8,000 BTU,DOE) Portable Air Conditioner, 115-Volt w/ Dehumidifier Function and LCD Remote in Graphite is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 612.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Works ok but dont expect it to last longer than the 1-year warranty This worked ok when it was new out of the box (tried it in a room a bit bigger than 500 sq ft and it didn’t do much at all, but anything smaller it did fine). Then it broke and LG has been giving me the run around for three weeks. The unit really only lasted for about four months of actual use. After storing it, I set it up this summer to find out the refrigerant had slowly leaked out. This sort of thing happens sometimes and isn’t a big deal to me as long as the company makes it right by repairing or replacing the unit. Instead LG has required document after document and endless phone calls with a “3-5 bussiness day response time” between each step. And that’s not the time to actually get it repaired, it’s just for them the decide if they’re willing to repair it since it’s out of the one year warranty! If you’re willing to pay this price for possibly only one year of use, then this review does not apply to you. If you value your time and money find a better brand than LG.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LG is GREAT Its a window vent AC. Its been in for about two months. It has exceeded all my expectations. For several weeks, its been extremely hot outside. And it cools 3 rooms on 1st floor. Each room is about 15' x15' on the average. * Its about the size of a small dorm refrig. * it hasnt displayed "the need to drain" message yet. * this is important- its a 14,000 btu rating and it seriously moves the air. Thats good. * my electricity bill is normally high in the summer months and with the LG on 98 % of time, I havent noticed a difference. * the vent hose gets warm and i put some bubble wrap around it in the beginning. I dont think it makes a difference. * when it runs its what i call a "white noise" . * it has passed my test. I enjoy ac in the summer. * main point also, i didnt have to put a heavy window unit in.. the LG is movable and has wheels on it. I have wall to wall carpeting and i can naneuver it arounnd. * installation of the vent hose and panels was easy.. Cost was low 400.00 range...

This ac unit was installed in my bedroom (approx 20x 16 ft) just prior to the onset of our recent heat wave. Ambient temp in room at time of install was 84.6 F. Approximately 15 min after turning on the unit the compressor shut off so the fan simply distributed 84 F air. I called tech service at LG and the agent explained how to reset the unit so the compressor would turn on. He thought he had solved my problem. The compressor shut off again and again after failing to cool the room by even 1 degree. After several “resets” with the same results I called LGs tech service again. This time the “technical assistance” agent advanced the crazy notion that the unit was “short cycling” after failing to cool my room by even 1 degree because my room was too small! She could not be dislodged from this silly hypothesis so I gave up on LG and returned the unit firmly resolved to consider LG an absolute last resort in future purchases.

I bought this to help cool a very hard-to-cool-room on a very hot weekend when I was having many guests. It was easy to set up and operate, and I think it made enough of a difference to help in a meaningful way, even though I knew it was way under-powered for the space. That said, it's important to understand the reason behind the new DOE BTU ratings for these standalone units. The vent hose that connects the free-standing unit to an outside exhaust throws off a LOT of heat. That's why the nominal 14,000 BTU rating is knocked back to 8,000 BTU - it can put that much heat back into the room. I heavily insulated the (provided) exhaust/vent hose, which definitely helped. Also, it was very effective in reducing humidity, which certainly increases comfort, even if the temp doesn't go down as much as you had hoped.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Built I really like this AC. It's powerful and offers 2 speeds. Also, it has the ability to use an external water drain mid way up when using the unit as a dehumidifier only. On Cool mode, the collected is used to cool the compressor and evaporates out the exhaust hose. It has a short power cord, so if using an extension cord use a min of 14 AWG, 12 would be ideal. But nothing excessively long, measure to fit. The auto open and closing louvers are a nice touch since the vents are on-top and they help prevent something from falling in. The Air Pressure coming from this vent is pretty powerful. It can be felt over 7 meters across the room. The exhaust hose is a good length. The only sad part are the wheels are very small, so when it sits on a soft carpet, the bottom drain port is pressed into the carpet. Another cm added to the diameter of the wheels would have been nice. For now, it sits on a piece of plywood.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from wish the hose would stay on the machine without duct... wish the hose would stay on the machine without duct tape. However we are very angry with LG company. Bought online, they shipped us a broken AC unit, sent a broken part to replace the broken part and then next replacement part was wrong part. A tech had to visit each time. LG refused to replace the new broken AC unit , let us ship it back for a new model or refund our money. They stated they are obligated to repair. If we had bought it in a store , it would have been replaced immediately. We are over 7 weeks out and the machine is still broken. It cost as much for all the tech visits as the AC unit and we had to buy another AC unit to safely manage the hot spell while waiting for repair of a brand new, never been used AC unit. Not a good way to do business.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from As the other 1 stars mention... Bought this unit in May 2018 and it worked like a charm during the summer of 2018... stored the unit indoors over the winter, went to fire it up in May 2019 and its stopped cooling and the compressor makes a noticeable whining noise. Bought the service plan with the unit and have gotten nothing but the run around trying to get this unit fixed, meanwhile the heat continues. Not sure what's a good alternative but for the price and hassle, it's just not worth it. HD

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Will ONLY cool the room it is in I've had this ac for almost a month now and I do not recommend that ac or any single hose portable ac for that matter. During one hot week, I've let that AC run 24/7 in my small 3 1/2 apartment (roughly 530sq.ft. total) The unit is located in my bedroom. It made my bedroom cold but the rest of my apartment actually HOTTER than the outside temperature. I tried setting up some desk fans to push the cold air out of my bedroom but it simply doesn't work. Only the room the unit is in gets cold and the other rooms WILL get hotter than the outside temperature. This is due to the poor engineering of any single hose portable ac. When on, this ac will shoot A LOT of cold air. But because that unit creates a vacuum effect in the room it is in, all the air from the other rooms are sucked into the room this unit is it, meaning the cold air NEVER leaves the room the unit is in. Meanwhile, hot air from outside is sucked into the other rooms. I hope this made sense. I do not recommend this ac. Always get a window air conditioner when possible, if it's not possible, get a dual hose portable ac. Never buy a single hose ac to cool more than one room; it simply cannot work. Now for the unit itself. It looks pretty good, very sleek design. I found that it makes as much noise as any typical air conditioner or big desk fans on high. It's located in my bedroom and the noise it made didn't prevent me from sleeping. If anything it helped me fall asleep due to the constant white noise it created. My window is 55 inches tall and I was able to correctly install the exhaust with the plastic pieces it comes with. (with the help of some duck tape) On a side note: because this unit is so poorly made, the room will never reach the set temperature and the unit will constantly stay on. Just a heads up for the electricity bill.
