The unit is a nice unit, with a couple exceptions. The flange has to be oriented (one flange edge is stamped "bottom"). However the marking is very faint. On the last one I installed, I slipped up and got the bottom flange off by 30 degrees. I had to guess at new hole location to get the proper position to make the top surface level. If the marking would have been more pronounced, the mistake would not have happened. Another feature that I added was to slide 1/4" mess hardware cloth on the base (slide under the unit before nailing it down). My wife thinks the opening could allow mice to enter into the attic. Not sure if it is true, but the hardware cloth is a neat addition. Another tip. Years ago I installed one, and lifted the shingles above the unit in order to remove the nails which are in the way, preventing you from sliding the flange up all the way. This time, after cutting the hole with the Saws-all, I switched blades, to a long fine tooth blade. You are able to easily slip this under the shingles to cut the nails. Much neater and quicker method.

I used these vents to replace existing vents on my home. I used the spinning unit only, and was happy it bolted on to the existing base without modification considering the home was built in 1982. They seem sturdy and I paid a little extra for this brand because of the american bearings installed.
