Thank you for your interest in our products LP SmartSide Panels should be installed using 8d, hot-dipped galvanized nails. You will need to penetrate your framing 1-1/2".

According to LP brochure The weight is 1.5 lbs per square foot. 8 ft x 4 ft panel = 32 Square feet x 1.5 lb = 48 lbs per panel. Be sure to follow the manufactures installation instructions. You can download them from box in lower right corner on Home Depot's product page.

I see no reason that it could not be used in a basement. It is an exterior grade product.
