If neon light is out is switch defective

Asked by Tim October 17, 2020

Answer

Perhaps, but not likely. Did it ever light? If not, you may have it wired incorrectly. There is very little that can go wrong with a neon light. There are just two electrodes (wires) located near each other in neon gas. When electricity is applied to the wires, the neon gas glows. There is no filament to burn out. There is a current limiting resistor, but nothing short of physical damage to the glass envelope would cause it to fail. You do need to have three wires attached to the device. One, usually black, feeding power to the switch. Another, almost any color except white or green, feeding switched power to the load. If you have this much, the switch and load will work, but the neon light will not light. You need a third wire, most certainly white, which feed the neutral side of the circuit to the device. Without a neutral ware, the lamp is not going to light. There are switches that do not have a separate lamp, but have a neon bulb within the switch handle. These types will light when the switch is off and will turn off when the switch is turned on. These type do not need the neutral, white, wire to operate.

Yes, this will work great for that application. It can be used in place of any standard 15 amp switch, it just adds the lighted indication so you only when it's left on. Obviously you can't use the standard switch cover but you can use an outlet cover instead.

They're should be 4 connections on the switch, one for ground, one for common, one for hot and one for the switch function. I'd say that if it doesn't have 4 connections then you have the wrong one.

I installed this switch but the pilot light stays on constantly. Why is it doing this?

You will need to exchange the “hot” and “switched” wires. They probably are both black, but the “switched” could be red. Be absolutely sure the power is off before even taking the cover off of the switch.

So, if i install this switch for an attic light and the light bulb burns out, the switch’s indicator light will go out?

No, if your light bulb burns out this switch's indicator will just stay on. This switch is not intelligent enough to detect the presence or absence of a downstream load

The switch is an excellent Product, I used two of them for two inline duct blowers for my wood furnace to direct the heat where needed and I wanted to see what one was on or off at a glance at the switch. If you look at the switch cover you will see a fuse protecting the smaller wire going to the duct heaters. I used one on our master bedroom walk in closet because my wife doesn't know how to shut the light off when she walks out, she can see the switch light to remind her. HOWEVER, LEVINGTON NEEDS TO KNOW THAT WHO EVER DREW THE LINE DIAGRAM IN THE BOX LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED. IT POINTS TO THE BLACK SCREW AND SAYS "COMMON" THEN IT SAYS "HOT" THIS IS CONTRIDICTARY OF EACH OTHER. IN RESIDENTAL WIRING THE WHITE WIRE IS COMMON AND THE BLACK WIRE IS THE HOT WIRE. THE LINE DRAWING SHOULD ELIMINATE THE "COMMON" AND JUST SAY HOT.

A PERFECT SOLUTION I needed a switch to operate a wall outlet for a towel warmer bar that has no built-in switch (the warmer bar plugs into a wall outlet). To avoid the potential hazard of plugging/unplugging the bar from the outlet (which is located in a wet area) my solution was to wire this switch to the wall outlet, so that the warmer bar could remain plugged into the outlet, and could be operated by the wall switch. The built-in pilot light on the switch also fulfills an important safety concern, by providing a visible cue (see pictures) when the towel bar heater is switched on. This product was a perfect solution. I am moderately experienced in household wiring, so I found installation to be reasonably straight-forward. For those who are not as experienced, wiring this combination switch might be puzzling, so here’s a few tips and attached pictures (when viewed from the front of the switch): 1. Black (line-in wire – from power source) connects to top right side (black colored) terminal. 2. Black (load wire -- to outlet/appliance/light) connects to top left side (copper colored) terminal. 3. Both white (neutral) wires (line-in wire and load wire) are pigtailed together and connect to bottom left side (silver colored) terminal. 4. Bare copper (ground wires) connect to bottom right side (green colored) terminal. The sole reason for the silver colored terminal connection is to supply power from the source to the pilot light. The wiring instructions, printed on the inside of the packaging cover are in a font so small as to be practically useless. However, wiring information is also widely available on the Internet. I am very pleased with the result, and would recommend this product for similar applications where it is helpful or important to visibly highlight that the switch is in the “on” position.

When I first purchased it I thought all you would need to connect is one hot and one negative. However you needed to connect two negative wires and when the circuit was made the red light was so dim you could hardly see it. So returned it and got a regular switch.

This is the second one I've had over the years and having that light to indicate whether a circuit is active is a big help. Using this one for a gutter heating cable to eliminate ice build up in the winter.
