About This Product

The SmartlockPro Outlet Branch Circuit (OBC) AFCI Receptacle offers advanced technology to help protect against electrical fires resulting from arc-faults. Designed to detect a wide range of potentially hazardous arc-faults resulting from damage in branch circuit wiring as well as extensions to branches such as appliances and cord sets, the OBC AFCI responds by interrupting power. This helps reduce the likelihood of the home's electrical system being an ignition source of a fire. Often unseen, arc-faults can occur anywhere in the home's electrical system including within walls, at loose electrical connections or within electrical cords accidently damaged by impinging furniture. AFCI's are now required by the National Electrical Code in many areas of the home.

Highlights

  • Use of TEST and RESET buttons is similar to traditional GFCI receptacles of which consumers have become familiar with this means greater acceptance of the technology and a more user-friendly platform
  • Automatically tests the AFCI every time the RESET button is depressed, the AFCI will not reset if the AFCI circuit is not functioning properly
  • By blocking reset of the AFCI if protection has been compromised, the SmartlockPro OBC AFCI reduces the possibility of end-users incorrectly assuming that a reset AFCI is providing protection
  • A line-load reversal diagnostic feature is provided which prevents the AFCI from being reset and stops power from being fed to the AFCI receptacle face or through to downstream devices

Q:Do these protect against arcing in appliances plugged into them? If a fan or transformer plugged into one fails, will it trip?

          Answer This Question

A:  Yes, in my experience, the appliance will cause it to trip. I was using an old food processor and must have accidentally exceeded its capacity, causing the motor to burn up instantly. When this happened, it immediately tripped the outlet. In fact, it blew the outlet and so I had to replace it entirely. If you just want to be 100% sure if the same will happened to your particular kind of appliance, you might want to call the customer service number for Leviton. I have found them to be great about answering such questions.

A:  Hello yes, if a connected or plugged in device has an arc fault the outlet will trip.

              Safety First
This device, is a Listed, duplex, tamper-resistant (TR), outlet branch circuit protector which will protect against arcing faults at the receptacle and downstream of it , when properly installed as the first receptacle outlet in a branch circuit. Note: strict compliance with the National Electrical Code (2014) may require the wiring "upstream" of this first outlet to be other than a non-metallic wiring method, such as MC or AC cable, or metallic raceway or wireway. Instructions are supplied for installation, where permitted by local codes, and the "load" terminals are marked with tape to minimize the chance of mis-wiring the supply wiring to those terminals (if that occurs, the device will not reset... following the troubleshooting diagnostics should identify the error). Self adhesive labels are provide to mark the "downstream" receptacle outlets as AFCI protected. The sliding "shutters" in the device make insertion of an object other than a parallel blade attachment plug difficult, providing an additional level of protection. Once installed, do not forget to routinely (monthly) test the function, using the built in test feature. Access to this test feature is required, so this device should not be installed in a location where access is blocked. The device is of the "self-grounding" type, if mounted to a grounded metallic box, additional bonding is not required to the receptacle.

              Products you can count on!
Leviton is the company I look for in electrical components. I have updated and replaced all the outlet and switches in my house with Levitron products. Not one has failed or let me down. This current outlet will power my new water fountain. Each wire post is clearly marked and labeled with the power turned off this is a simple ten minute job for any DIY'er.
