Peace of mind, all the time. The SmartlockPro Self-Test GFCI tests itself even if you forget. Designed to meet the latest UL standard for auto-monitoring (self-test) our complete line of self-test GFCI's periodically conduct an automatic internal test to confirm that it can respond to a ground fault. With the slimmest profile on the market, the device allows for fast and easy installation, while Leviton's patented reset lockout mechanism prevents reset of the GFCI if it is not wired or operating correctly. The SmartlockPro Self-Test GFCI is the smart choice in ground fault circuit interrupter protection.
  • Provides continuous ground fault protection, detects and trips on actual ground fault even when self-test is being conducted
  • On initial power up, tests the GFCI within 3 seconds
  • Auto-monitoring exceeds the UL requirement
  • Auto adapts and shifts to more frequent testing if potential problem is detected
  • Status indicator light provides simple, intuitive feedback on power and protection status as well as indication of line/load reversal
  • Patented lockout action prevents reset if GFCI is damaged and cannot respond to a ground fault
  • Electronics are designed to minimize any false triggers
  • Reduced depth makes it easier to install in any electrical box, even shallow ones
  • Terminals allow for easy wiring options, back and side wire capable
  • External back wire clamps provide visual indication of proper wire seating
  • Withstands high torque and resists wire pullout
  • Standard brass self-grounding clip
  • Trip threshold meets or exceeds UL requirements for tripping time
  • Improved immunity to high-frequency noise reduces nuisance tripping
  • Advanced electronics design provides superior resistance to electrical surges and over-voltages
  • Compatible with all decora devices and wall plates; available in select decora colors
  • UL federal specification WC-596 rated

All of these GFCI outlets are ungrounded. I understand that the GFCI aspect serves the same purpose as grounding, but is there a practical difference when used in the garage with power tools (this is a dedicated circuit)? Code requires GFCI outlets in the garage (I believe). Are there any with grounding as well? What is appropriate?
Asked by: Aaron
You do not give enough information. The recepticle has a green ground screw to attach a ground wire to. If you have metal conduit through to a metal box ground the box to the receptacle green screw. Drive a copper rod in the ground out behind your garage and ground the green screw to it if you want to be sure the outlets are grounded and you do not have a service ground. Call an electrician.

I am putting outlets in a covered porch, on the posts, facing inward. The boxes will be weatherproof with weatherproof, in-use covers and all wiring (UF-B) run through schedule 80 pipe. Can I use this receptacle? I saw another brand that stated it was outdoor rated, but it isn't as good a brand as Leviton.
Asked by: Frank
This model is not outdoor-rated. You should consider the GFWR2 instead.

I have other circuits coming to this box. Replacing old GFI in bath. When removing old, I made mistake of not marking the LINE wires. To find my line connections, I used a GB tester. Placed one probe on the ground wire and the other on both black. The correct wire clearly lit the tester. I left the probe on the black wire and expected touching one of the two white would give me my line white. Unfortunately both whites light the tester. There are 3 sets of romex coming into the box. One has the black that is testing for line. The white in this cable is going to the GFI. The other two sets white and black are going to wire nuts with jumper on both white and black going to GFI. Can you help
Asked by: Howard
First I am not an electrician, but I have been wiring my basement and everything has passed so far. From what you describe, the first set of black and white wires are your "Load" coming into the outlet and should be attached to the "top" screws on the outlet (one on the left and one on the right). The instructions will tell you which one takes the black and which takes the white. The second set of wires with the jumpers will go to the bottom part of the outlet (which comes covered with a warning strip indicating it is for the "Load going out"). These wires will go to the next outlet that you are wiring. If the GFCI outlet gets tripped, it will cut off power to the rest of the outlets. One other thing which I didn't know until I researched it, the Leviton outlets are tested at the factory and are shipped in the "Tripped" mode which means no power will flow until they are reset and the only way they can be reset is to be installed with power applied.

20 amp Leviton GFCI installed correctly, but is Flashing Red

This outlet has been installed for over five months and has been green all the time and working fine, but as of today, it has started flashing red and no longer works. The circuit at the panel is still on and there is power to the outlet, but the outlet and the additional outlet it is protecting, no longer work. Does the flashing red mean I have a bad GFCI outlet?
Asked by: SIJ
Check your breaker. You may have an arc fault breaker or a ground fault breaker which you will need to reset also. You may also have an outlet which tripped one too many times and it should be replaced.

The GFCI outlet was easy to install, as a homeowner, with terminals that allow you to wrap the wire around the terminal screw or slide it down behind a metal clamp. Either way you tighten down the terminal screw to hold in place. I found the tamper resistance features made it more difficult to push the Reset button all the way in. In fact I resorted to using a screw driver to gently push the button into place. The tamper resistant features also require more push to insert the male plug than the older models.
