Q:can this switch be used with LED lights?

Answer This Question

A:  Yes. I purchased and installed one in August 2020 for that precise purpose. It requires a neutral wire in the outlet box, but the switch has the braided neutral wire pigtail ready for connecting. A separate pilot light hot wire is connected directly to the hot line in the box. The rest of the switch is wired normally. The current for the pilot light goes through the pilot wire and neutral and not through the LED load, so you don't get any dim glow from the switch on the LEDs when the switch is off (only the pilot light glows). Even though this is a three way switch, I only used it as a single pole in this setup.

A:  Yes, but it is not a dimmer.. only as on and off.

Q:I see the pilot light is on when the load is on, which is what I want. However... I don't want it to be illuminated when the load is off, as this says it is. Can that be defeated?

A:  The pilot light has its own two separate wire legs so you can power it on and off the way you want depending on if you feed current to those legs or not..

A:  The pilot is separately wired so it can be connected however desired.

A:  No, I do not believe it can. Illuminated switches are manufactured to be in a lit fashion when off, to allow for locating the switch in a dim or no light scenario. That is part of the internal manufacturing of the product. You would probably need to find a Pilot Light switch that was just that...Pilot Light only.

Q:Can this 20 Amp switch be safely used on a 15 Amp circuit?

      Answer This Question

      A:  yes

      by|Mar 20, 2019

A:  Yes. It can. However the opposite should nevet be done because on overload the switch would burn and the circuit breaker would not trip. That could cause a fire.

A:  Hi , Thank you for choosing Leviton. No, because it is capable of tripping the breaker if load exceeds 15A.

      by|Jan 23, 2021

A:  Using a 20 amp switch on an existing 15 amp lighting circuit is no problem, as the lighting circuit will draw no more than what it was designed to do with 14 gauge wire. The switch is just manufactured to take a higher amperage usage for a 20 amp circuits.. It is just made to withstand a higher load running thru it. A 20 Amp receptacle, on the other hand, CAN NOT be used with 14 gauge wire as it has the potential to allow something with a 20 amp cord cap to be plugged in, and that something could overdraw the the rating of the 14 gauge wire.

A:  Yes. Its rated for 20 amps, which is more than 15 amps

Q:Hi, Can this 3-way switch be wired so the pilot lamp is "on" when the load is "on" regardless which of the 2 switches turned the load "on?"

A:  Yes, the 5638-2W will illuminate when the load is switched on, regardless of which 3-way switch was used.

A:  This switch is a 5638-2W, which is a 3 way switch. The 5628-2W (not in this ad) is a single pole switch. The answer to your question is yes. However, you may need to install an additional wire between the switches with this type of switch.

You may need to pull an extra wire! The pilot light is wired separately from the switch -- the hot and neutral pigtails are effectively connected as a separate load. This might require a fourth conductor between the switches depending on how you're using it, which means it can't be used as a drop-in replacement at both ends of an existing 3-way run. You might get lucky, if you only need the pilot light at one end and/or you have a separate neutral already supplied to the box, you may not need to add an extra conductor. The switch feels solidly built and switches quietly, like any Decora Plus switch. The pilot light is pretty bright so it's easy to see. The light spills over between the toggle and the frame, but I don't find this to be a negative. It does exactly what I wanted it to do.

The light operates the my fixture and the pilot light is working. However, the illumination is not working when the fixture is switched off, as it supposedly should per description. Frankly, I could care less about this the next peeves. 1) The switch flexes before snapping into position. I checked my other regular Leviton switches (they physically look different with a dividing line in the middle), and they have a determinate definite snap. They barely, or don't flex at all. It just the feeling that the switch is not physically well constructed. 2) The led itself is not that bright. 3) The light switch illuminates with the LED and it has that bizarre strange dirty look, like there some part of the switch is randomly filled with some material (see the photo).

I wanted a lighted 3 way switch that was different than the standard decora one you can purchase in the store. This is nothing special. The standard lighted decora switch probably is more elegant than this one that I had to wait 10 days for to pick up at the local home Depot store. The quality of the switch looks stronger and there is the option to have the light indicator on all the time if you wish which the standard switch to not have, but there is an extra wire you have to deal with as well.
