The Leviton 20 amp outlet with two built in charging ports is a great space saver no matter where you install it. My charging station was in the kitchen at the end of the cabinets where there is plenty of room to work. Previously you had to hunt a wall wart charger because they get carried off all the time. The installation only takes minutes and the Leviton outlet slides right into a regular outlet box very snugly. It needs a two screw cover plate so be sure to get that at the same time so you don't have to make another trip.

The Leviton USB charger outlet works as advertised. It was easy to install and has a nice contemporary design. When I did the install, I made sure since this was a 20 amp outlet, that I had 12 gauge wire going to a 20 amp breaker. In addition, I used the green ground screw and attached it to the metal outlet box for concern about RF noise. I also used black electrical tape over the outlet screws to reduce the chance of spark and/or shock while installing or future remove if needed.

The Leviton Brand, 20 Amp Tamper Resistant Duplex Outlet with Type A and Type-C USB Chargers, White, offers real USB device charging convenience were space allows for its installation. This feature packed duplex receptacle is somewhat bulky and as such there may not always be space in some receptacle boxes for its installation. I tried installing this receptacle in two locations in my kitchen where house guests would find it convenient for charging their portable devices without success due to space limitations. I did find a receptacle box in our guest bathroom protected upstream by a GFCI, deep enough, and with enough space for its installation. With both the Type A and C USB ports in use, and an 1875-watt hair dryer plugged in, all devices were powered perfectly. Due the bulky nature of this receptacle I only rated it 4 out of 5. To be a perfect five, it would have also needed to be more compact in construction.

I have a custom home with Leviton outlets and switches throughout so I felt confident ordering this USB Duplex Outlet. It has one USB A and one USB C outlet in addition to the two standard, 20amp outlets. I considered purchasing the more modern “usb with power delivery” outlet because I think it can provide the higher voltage USB charging levels needed for tablets and some laptops. However, I decided I still need a USB A outlet to charge some of my older devices (e.g. an old kindle). I recommend checking the circuit you are using; it should have a 20amp breaker for this 20 amp outlet. Leviton also makes a 15amp version for 15amp circuits. You can tell that this is a 20amp outlet because of the angled plug holes. The USB circuitry makes the outlet about twice as thick as the plug I removed, but my electrical contractor used deep boxes, so it fit in easily. Installing this outlet is simple. It is very clearly labelled and includes a strip gauge to make sure your wires are the correct length. Unfortunately, figuring out how to remove the old outlet was a little more difficult. Eventually, I figured out that I needed to use a jeweler's screwdriver to press the latch holding the wires in the back of the old outlet. I included a photo in case you have to remove a similar device. Once I pressed on the latch, the wires popped out easily, and they were stripped to the perfect length for my new outlet! I moved the ground wire from the old outlet to the new one, slipped the white wires in the slots labeled “white”, tightened that screw, slipped the black wires in the slots labelled “Active”, and tightened that screw. That’s it! The stiff wires needed a little persuasion to fold nicely back into the box, but there was plenty of space for this outlet. Now I can charge my phone and my bluetooth headphones at the same time. And I can leave my chargers in my overnight bag so I won’t forget them on my next trip!

With more and more devices accepting USB charging options, this outlet adds flexibility with both Type A and Type B charging ports as well as two 110 volt outlets. Installation is easy but make sure to shut off the circuit breaker before beginning the install. This charging outlet is compatible with many items including, but not limited to, Smart Phones, Tablets, Cameras, Lap Tops and USB capable Flash Lights.

Handy duplex outlet for an area where you want both normal 120 VAC plug-in and need to also charge electronic gear (cell phones, etc.) and don't want to take up space with an adapter (wall wart). This will connect USB type-A and type-C plugs as well as two 120VAC plugs.. The outlet could be installed in either a 20A or 15A circuit, but is is rated for a 20A circuit. I replaced a standard duplex outlet in my shop with this outlet. Now I can have my Isotune Bluetooth ear buds charged and ready for listening to tunes and enjoying the noise cancellation feature. My Cell phone can be charging while I'm working in the shop. Two other pieces of equipment can be plugged into the 120VAC openings at the same time (battery chargers, lights, power equipment, etc.). I added a small shelf below the outlet to ensure I have a place to hold my phone and other items while charging. A word of caution about the wiring. Most outlets have white (neutral) on one side and black (hot) on the other side. However, due to the electronics inside this device, both white and black are on the same side of the outlet. Just read the marking to ensure it is wired properly. The instruction tell you to strip the wires at 3/4". That is good if you are installing this at the end of a circuit and will be wrapping the wires around the screw. However, if this is in the middle of a circuit (two cables need to be connected), then the insulation should be stripped at about 1/2" and the ends slid under the connection plate that gets secured with the screw. Ensure you tighten all screws so a wire doesn't pull out. Don't ask me how I know that. As always, ensure power is off before starting installation.

Leviton is known for quality electrical products and this duplex outlet, with both type A and type C USB chargers, lives up to the Leviton reputation. The tamper resistant feature is becoming more standard with new outlets and one which I like. The installation was typical for a duplex outlet - no problems encountered. The outlet also came with an oversized outlet cover in white, which I chose not to use.

The Leviton outlet with Type A and Type C USB chargers is a great product across the board. With anything that has to do with electrical, I always check and then double check to make sure there is no electrical current prior to starting the project. There is nothing wrong with hiring a licensed-professional electrician. In some scenarios, even if someone flips a breaker to temporarily cut power to something (an outlet in this case), there can still be phantom voltage. I use two devices to check and recheck before touching any wires. The first device you will see in one of the pictures is one that you plug into an outlet. It will not only tell you if the outlet has power, but it will also tell you if the outlet is wired properly. In the picture I took, you can see that there are no LEDs lit which passes my first check. I then carefully unscrew the outlet from the box and pull the receptacle out. The second device I use to check to electrical current is a non-contact voltage detector pen. You will see in the one picture that I am using the pen to touch the jacket part of the black (hot) wire. If the pen goes red, it is detecting current. If it stays green, no current is detected. I also check all other wires to make sure the pen stays green. Last thing on safety is to let everyone in your home know that you are turning a breaker off. This is to ensure that someone doesn't accidentally flip the breaker back on while you are working on that circuit. Now for the product itself, my phone utilizes a standard USB port to charge, but my wife's phone utilizes a Type-C USB port. This outlet allows for both devices to be charged. I took a picture of the outlet cover plate that I used so you can see what fits with this outlet. This is a great product that I would love to eventually have one installed in most rooms of my house. Be safe!

It is inevitable that technology continues to change and as soon as we all got set on USB plugs, the next generation is coming. This outlet provides a nice combination of both with both the common USB and the new USB type C charger. I recently purchased a new iPad and it came with a totally new plug and wasn’t able to use the existing outlets I had previously installed with just the USB. I found the outlet super easy to install and replaced my existing one in less than five minutes. I also found the outlet to put out quite a bit of power and charge my devices faster than they would with the typical plug adapter.

very convenient. i have tried a previous versions with only usb type A and another that has only usb type C. i prefer this one as it has both type A and type C. this is preferred for me since i have a mix of cords that are type A to C and others that are type C on both ends. it is easier to have an outlet situated near where you frequently charge devices like a nightstand or entry way table and not have to worry about a power brick. the only thing you need to charge nearly any device is just the cable. the obvious disclaimer if you are not knowledgeable with safe electrical installation and standards consider hiring a professional.
