Switch plate size: 1.34” W x 3.7” H Better take picture of your original switch plate On the door, then enlarge it, you will see produce company and item number. Very important to purchase same item to save time and money.

Can I source just the push button switch to replace?

Asked by Joe April 1, 2020

Answer

I don't see it for sale at Home Depot, but the switch seems to be a Carling P267T-1D. A brief search on the internet will find a number of sources for it. Make sure it's a normally closed switch, i.e., momentary-off.

When the button is pressed does the light go off?

Asked by Terry July 25, 2019

Answer

Yes. It is a normally closed switch, so the circuit is closed, i.e., light is on, when the button is NOT pressed.

Hi , Thank you for choosing Leviton. Yes, as long as the door closes tight enough to trigger the switch they should be no problem.

Where can I find installation instructions?

I don't think there are any. As an engineer and woodworker, I had no trouble figuring out how to incorporate this into the door frame while building the wall. These are difficult, but not impossible to retrofit into an existing wall/door.

Will this switch work with a recessed LED light in a closet?

Yes as long as the 3 amp rating is not exceeded.

If these are older units, like the one in my 1929 home, the spring may be worn out, or the button shaft has started to catch on the shaftway in the switch. The best course of action is to replace the entire unit, especially as older versions of this switch type are not likely to be UL-listed. It is unlikely you'll be able to buy the switch "guts" only, and if you buy the Leviton product and try to remove the innards and put them in the existing switch carcass, you will definitely void the product's UL listing.

Answer

By "unit" I assume you mean the switch. Yes, you can buy the switch, but probably not from Home Depot. I have used these switches in two homes, and have never had one fail. There are two main reasons why your switches have failed, mechanical or electrical. The switch has probably not failed electrically unless you are trying to turn on too many watts of light bulbs. I see that the entire unit is rated at 3 amps, which is over 300 watts. If you are turning on many bulbs with one switch, try using LED bulbs instead. It's more likely that your switch has failed mechanically. They have a very short travel, which is unfortunate, so they require very careful adjustment when installed. Many electricians/contractors do not take the time to properly adjust them. There are two nuts on the switch bushing, one on the inside of the plate and one on the outside. This allows you to adjust how much the button protrudes from the box. If it sticks out too far, closing the door will eventually break the switch. If it sticks out too little, the door will not push it in enough when closed and the light will stay on. You need to find an SPST (single pole single throw) NC (normally closed) momentary push button. A quick search found this one (https://guitarpedalparts.com/product/spst-momentary-pre-wired-soft-touch-foot-switch-nc/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIso2MpJeW2gIVim5-Ch0EMghZEAQYASABEgIDOfD_BwE) which is sold by a company that sells parts for guitar pedals although the switch is certainly not designed for only that application.

Pretty closely matched the previous switch, although I had to shape the corners of the wood frame a little to get the faceplate to sit in the old faceplate's spot. The doorjamb switch works flawlessly now.

First time using this brand door switch but seems to be just as good as the competitors and it's a good thing too because is seems as tho they've (the other big box competitor) stopped carrying the one I've used for so many jobs in the past. These little switches are awesome so I'm super glad these guys still offer one because I'll definitely be returning to buy more in the future.
