Family Handyman says that "cabinets need to have self-closing hinges for the dampeners to work." Is this true? Doesn't seem right to me. Also, why would self-closing doors need a dampener?
Asked by: Curious
Hi Curious! A self-closing hinge is not necessary for the dampers to work. If a door is hung properly or the traditional hinges adjusted properly the door will close easily once given a slight push, the weight of the door is sufficient to do this. The damper simply slows down the rate of close when the door is almost closed. It takes out the annoying snap of a cupboard door closing like magic. Self closing hinges if set up properly should close with a simple push and should not need an additional damper

Customer Reviews

Soft Close Cabinet Door Damper is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 180.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from No more slamming While going through the aisles in Home Depot, I ran into this damper and thought to give it a try. Material is all plastic and does not feel sturdy at all. Installation requires a drill and a 3/32 drill bit to make pilot hole. The hole is to be made at a 65 degree angle. The damper sits in the very corner of the cabinet where front vertical and horizontal panels connect. You in fact can screw it where ever you want but the corner will be the best place where it can get maximum beating. You absolutely do not need any special skills to install it, the process is fairly simple. So far, I don’t hear any cabinet slamming and it’s been working great. On most of my kitchen cabinets, I had to install 2 dampers on each door (one top and one at the bottom) since single damper was not really stopping the door if I closed it a little hard. But with 2 in place, it’s working just as I wanted. It’s a simple solution to avoid door slamming and giving your cabinets a high-end look. I cannot speak about longevity but for now I am liking it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Flawlessly I was skeptical about these cabinet door soft close devices, but I have to admit they work great. They are easy to install with only one small screw; I put all ten in in less than 10 minutes. And they work instantly just like the high priced soft close cabinets everyone wants now. I didn't have to adjust any of them, but I played with the adjustment screw as a test and it works well, too. The instructions say to use two for heavy doors, but my doors are pretty heavy (42" uppers) and they are way strong enough for them. This is a really cool thing someone could put in and surprise a loved one with; you know, for extra credit. They seem to be built strongly, but I'll update this review in a month or so. They don't take up much space, but they are visible and obvious when the door is open. No problem for me. I highly recommend them.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Will Buy Metal Ones Next Time Based on all the positive reviews, I bought 30 of these a year ago, installed them all the fist day and they worked great. I posted a review saying I couldn't be more pleased. But a year later I'm disappointed. They look like metal, but they're plastic. The plastic flange that holds them in place gradually gives way over time, so that they no longer stay in position. As the door closes, the soft-close device pushes back, allowing the door to close rapidly and hard. They wore out first on the cabinets we use the most. On cabinets we use infrequently, they're still holding up. But it looks like they'll all break eventually. A real metal flange would make them adequate. But the plastic is not. I won't buy them again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Change OK cabinet doors to something fantastic! These cabinet door soft close dampers do exactly what they should and are so easy to install. I installed the dampers on some inexpensive cabinetry in our laundry room. The doors banged when we shut them. I was just waiting for something to break. Now, no more stress and we didn't have to change our behavior. Our family still does the slamming action, but the doors close gently...and all the way! The damper casing is all metal so I expect that it will last for the life of the cabinets!
