Can i make the motion sensor work ONLY when its dark outside

Asked by Eddie October 5, 2018

Answer

I've had this light for over 3 years now and it's never operated during daylight hours, maybe during early morning or late day snow or twilight situations where motion is detected. You have to make sure that the light sensor bubble faces close to the direction for which the sun travels for optimal performance.

Is this light 2016 Calif energy code section 150.0 (k) compliant?

Not sure. I suggest you check with the manufacturer or see if the specs have the answer to your question. I will say this light gives great light and looks good too!

I only need the ligjts to light a path along the side of the garage. Are the lamp heads and motion sensor flexible enough to point downwards? Thanks.

That's the reason I purchased and still utilize these units, for their "spot on" illumination. As long as the light sensor bubble is not blocked they can be adjusted in many directions, the baffles can also be turned to allow exact light focusing.

Is there a photocell (so lights do not turn on during the day)?

Yes, this light does not turn on during the day, but it does activate from dusk to dawn.

Correct as long as you have switching capabilities to that fixture.

can you use switch in house to turn lights on from inside house?

Answer

You can override the automatic on/off feature of this light. I used it that way a few times. How to do it is clearly explained in the directions. You can override by using just the light switch. (If you just want an outside light to turn on/off by the switch, then obviously there are less expensive products. The key feaure here is the motion-sensing feature.)

Overall, a fine product at a fair cost. This Lithonia LED security was extremely easy to install and works pretty much as advertised. One small but terrific touch was the inclusion of a wire “hook” to suspend the light from the outlet box while connecting the wires – it made twisting the included wire nuts much easier. One improvement would have been to use the newer “push-in/lock” wire connectors but the nuts worked fine. The instructions are great and the only tools needed to install (assuming an electrical box is already installed) are a Phillips screwdriver and a small slotted screwdriver (to affix the tiny set screws holding the light's glare shield in place). The lights and sensor are easy to point and lock, thanks to a large flat finger-grip screws that tightens the joints without tools, and one can easily point the sensor as much as 180 degrees away from the lights if desired. In operation, I found the sensitivity to be adequate. Although I never got the “70 ft” of range advertised, I could easily trip the sensor walking 40 feet away, and the lights are sufficiently bright to illuminate objects over 150 feet away. The lights can be also be operated manually (after dark) by switching power off, waiting 3 seconds, then switching power back on. The unit looks good and seems well built, but the price is pretty high – as much as twice the price of competitor units with similar capabilities. Still, Lithonia has a better reputation for quality and durability and the ease of installation and flexibility of adjustment is worth some extra cost. I recommend this unit.

Overall nice light that works fine and is very bright, even outside in the low 20 degrees. These comments may be helpful to others. First the hook they provide to hang the light while you connect the wires is a good idea in theory but really didn't work for me. The way my existing exterior waterproof box was mounted, it didn't allow for the wire to loop over anything and stay put. Second, the fixture wires were almost too short and were not stripped enough. (If you have done lights before, then all this can be overcome while you ready the light: Prep the wires for correct connection; install the provided bracket; and connect the light to hang off the 3 wires if needed.) Third, at first the light did not test at all. You move the switch to TEST and nothing. The "trick" is that the switch clicks into TEST. If you slide it to TEST, then it is not in test mode. Minor, but I couldn't find that in the instructions. Fourth, the light hoods require a tiny screwdriver. (Find one before you climb up the ladder to install the light.) Fifth, you need some silicone or caulk to seal around the light. A rubber weather "washer" is normally included but not with this exterior light. Sixth and lastly, there is a one-line comment somewhere in the instructions that the light needs a dedicated circuit and can not have a motor (like a garage door opener) on the circuit. This is not listed anywhere on the box. In practice, this light is probably going to be located near a workshop door or a garage door - all of which have openers. Normally, lights are on one circuit and outlets on another; however, in a garage often there is one circuit. In my case, it is working just fine in conjunction with a workshop (garage) door opener. It gets a top rating for construction, light brightness, and overall ease of installation.

This unit is a dual light outdoor LED security flood light system. It has a nice bronze finish. It has a 180 degree sensor to allow it to activate from all angles and up to 70 feet away. According to the product literature, these lights provide 1600 lumens and since they are LED’s it only uses 19 watts of energy. The lights also come with optional visors you can use if you want to avoid light going into your neighbors homes. Also according to the literature, it lights up an area of approximately 60 feet by 100 feet if it is mounted at a height of 20 feet. I don’t have it mounted that high but that seems to be a fair estimation of the coverage. The installation of this light was very simple and I had it up and running within 20 minutes. I installed it during the day but once night came, I found that this light does an excellent job of flooding the area with light. I have a different motion light and this new one seems to do a better job of flooding my yard with light. The motion sensor seems to work as advertised and I have not had any problems where it didn’t activate. I have only had this light for about one month and it’s working fine. The lights have a claimed life of 50,000 hours but obviously I haven’t had it long enough to confirm that. I think this is an excellent light and I would definitely recommend it.

Old light bit the dust and we needed a great motion light on the house lighting the walkway from driveway to front door for mom. This one did the trick. It comes on at first detection of motion and lights up the entire walkway. The leds are bright and probably cover over 75 feet of light when mounted on a one story eave. Energy efficient is a plus and longer lasting bulbs an even bigger plus. The box looked rather small and the light inside did too. I was confused. Once I took out of box and stretched it in open position it is a very nice size. It was an optical "conclusion" on my part. It does actually come in white and a bronze so besides all of the great features and quality workmanship and design you also have color option for your needs.

Poor Longevity, No Customer Service
Had these (two fixtures) in my garage for about four months before one started flashing on and off when triggered and, shortly thereafter, the other dimmed noticeably. Tried contacting them and received no response at all. Not acceptable - especially for over-priced lighting!
