Questions & Answers

What is the average bulb life in hours?

I would like to know how long the bulbs last when ran 1 to 2 hours per night, and in a dry northern CA climate with occasional rain. Can rain damage the glass or the fixture?
Asked by: DIYGuy
I think the best answer for this is how the bulb is installed. No ones seem to use these bulbs until their true life expectancy. The problem with these high current, high temperature bulbs is that they fail due to heat. If there is either a heat spot on the bulb from improperly handling the bulb with your bare fingers or otherwise getting something on the bulb it will heat up and burn out very quickly. The other problem is heat problems from the metal holder/connectors. If there is not a good connection to the bulb then this creates resistance and with high current causes high heat and then burns up once again. The connectors also get weak from having heat problems. After you burn a bulb out from a heat problem the metal gets weak and causes high resistance. If you can somehow both keep all contaminates off of the bulb AND make sure you have an EXCELLENT low resistance connection to the bulb these have the potential of lasting a reasonable amount of time. Another cause for trouble is just being outdoors where there is a lot of weather and temperature changes that will change the pressure of the connectors thereby increasing the resistance and temp as time goes by. I have always used gloves and make sure never to touch the bulb at all and also check and adjust the contacts to get max pressure on the bulb and even have put some kind of spring device like a type of paperclip on the outside of the connector to keep constant pressure on the contacts. And cleaning and checking the bulb on a regular basis. It is a hassle and with the new LED super low current, low current and high output I'm not sure why anyone would spend this much time except for the fact that they will put out a ton of light for a super low cost. These are dirt cheap compared to LED lighting but totally unreliable in an outdoor environments. And the cheaper the contacts the more prone to failure they are. If you insist on having this older technology make sure to get the best bulb socket you can get. And do everything you can to keep a good connection. 10 times the current create 50x the heat problems causing premature failure. I have ran these for years on a single bulb. My First one I installed when i built the building 25 years ago and i have only replaced the bulb twice. But I rarely use it. Maybe 1-hour a day average and usually a bunch at one time and then not at all for weeks at a time. My original unit cost me $10 so it wasn't a high dollar unit it was just properly installed and maintained. I have also had indoor torch lights which have been outlawed in CA since they have been known for causing a lot of fires but I continue to use my very old units. I did have one burn up and had to replace the socket since the metal would not hold a bulb properly anymore. Once overheated the metal looses it spring tension around the bulb and has to be replaced. and in this case just replacing the bulb worked for about a day until I replaced the socket. Even with my optional paperclip trick, the metal just had too much resistance after overheating. I hope this helps someone understand the relationship of high current devices where a spring socket is used. If it could be soldered in it would probably last for the duration of the bulb life but I could not make this work when I tried.

Are these lamps dimable?

I am looking to incorporate these fixtures into a scenic design (for theatrical purposes) and would like to be able to wire them to our dimmers. does this lamp support dimming? Thanks
Asked by: Trev
You would have to find a dimmer switch that could handle the wattage. My lamp is 500 watts. My opinion not a good idea. That is a lot to put on a dimmer switch.

How are these wired in

Do they have knock outs
Asked by: Ken
Must be grounded. It comes with wire nuts. It should screw down on to a metal box when using a metal plate that accepts the fixture threaded stand pipe. The nut is on the fixture. Most applications will use the plate but It does not come with a plate you must purchase that extra. You can not and do not mount the lamp to anything but to an approved base. It uses T-3 bulb and comes with a choice of bulbs 300 watt or 500 watt bulb. The fixture when on for a short time will be to hot to touch. You need at least one inch clearance around the back, top and bottom, left and right sides, That said the front glass is extremely hot. Absolutely do not mount this device directly on wood. I am picturing some folks might be tempted to drill the lamp and mount it on the wall and that would be a good way to have a fire. Do not mount closer then 4 feet from ground. This lamp is for outdoor use only.
