            Answer This Question

Thank you for the question. Loctite Instant Mix 5-minute Epoxy may work fine when fully cured and used on surfaces that are properly cleaned before application of the product. However, this product does not work on all plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, non-stick coatings, nylon products, or flexible materials. Testing is recommended beforehand understanding that the intended use may be out of scope for this product since no other details are available.

Dear Customer, thank you for your recent inquiry with The Home Depot regarding the Loctite Instant Mix 0.47 fl. oz 5 Minute Epoxy (6-Pack). This product should work fine however, more suitable products for plastics would be Loctite Epoxy Plastic or the Loctite Plastics Bonder. These products will work on most plastics but not all such as polyethylene, polypropylene, non-stick coatings, nylon products or flexible materials. Hope this helps! -The Home Depot-

                  Does it work with HDPE?
                  ByMar 22, 2022
                  1 Answer |
                  Answer This Question

Thank you for the question. Unfortunately, HDPE is known for being a difficult plastic to glue because of its “high abrasion resistance” and Loctite Instant Mix 5-minute Epoxy will not work on this material. Depending on the nature and size of your project or repair situation you might consider trying Loctite Plastics Bonding System which is designed for hard to bond plastics in small projects and repairs. Loctite does not offer a product for large projects involving HDPE.

                    Good product, bad delivery system.
This product works exactly as advertised when you follow the instructions. However, even following the instructions won't save you from wasting a significant amount of the product each time you use it. You will also most likely be unable to use all of the product in the container. The problem is the "Instant Mix" tips. When used, they waste a large amount of the product, which remains in the baffles of the mix tip even after you've dispensed the desired amount. Furthermore, if you plan on dispensing the glue more than twice, you are out of luck, because that's how many mix tips are included. To remedy both of these problems: 1) Chuck the "Instant Mix" tips (or buy a product without them to begin with) 2) Mix this stuff yourself with two items: First, a Microbrush mixer/applicator (Google it) and second, a plastic spoon. (See photos). Peasy! Now you can mix AND USE (rather than toss out with the tips) exactly how much you need AND do it as many times as you need to, especially with small jobs--and let's face it, glue repair jobs are usually pretty small. Not sure exactly what drove the designers of this product to make it more expensive, complicated and inefficient than it needs to be with these Instant Mix tips, but yeah, it happened. Fortunately, most consumers are smarter than they are. Happy gluing!

Had a finished wood mantle to set on top of a brick fireplace hearth. Could not connect the mantle with large ugly fasteners, and we did not want to destroy the brick, so we epoxied a 1x nailer to the top of the brick. 5 minutes later, we were ready to secure the mantle to the top of the fireplace with finish screws. The perfect solution to a difficult securement problem.

Good for lazy folks like me, but wasteful
This product is for folks who don't like the messy process of mixing and applying epoxy from a tube set. All you have to do with this one is to snap off the tube's cap, attach the plastic nozzle, and press the plunger. The epoxy will be mixed in the nozzle as it travels toward the tip. Two removable nozzles are supplied; I think there should have been at least 4. The problem is that for small jobs, there may be a lot left in the tubes after the two non-reusable nozzles are spent. Now, it is possible to use the remaining epoxy without the nozzle attached, but after that there will be some contamination of the contents, possibly rendering the material left in the tubes unusable the next time. Of course, if you don't use the nozzles, you will have to revert to the normal method of mixing and applying. The instructions do not fully describe the application of the nozzle. Most folks will be able to figure it out, but for others: You need to push the nozzle onto the tube set body with the locking "ears" passing between the stop tabs. Then you rotate the nozzle counter-clockwise till the lock tab reaches the stop. Do the opposite to remove it. See the attached photo. The instructions say to pull back on the plunger prior to removing the nozzle, but do not pull it back too much (maybe 1/8") or you will contaminate the tube contents and the material will be too hard to use later. Place the cap on the tube set end like in the attached photo. I suggest remembering which way the cap is on before reapplying the cap the second time (or more). You can peal off the label to see how much material is left inside at any time.
