Q:What does ?shelf ladder? mean and why is the height capacity of this ladder so much less when it is used as a ?shelf ladder??

      Answer This Question

A:  It has to do with which rung the ladder is rated for. When this ladder is open one can safely step on a higher rung. When it is flat and leaning against a wall the rating allows standing one rung below.

A:  This ladder is a commercial/industrial rated model. Front rungs are triple riveted, as well as angle braced. For every front rung there is a rear cross brace and they are double riveted. This is the high quality/heavy duty ladder you will only need to buy once.

A:  Mine does not stand flat on a flat surface, it wobbles!

A:  Shelf ladder is shown in the second picture. You can lean it up against a wall or pole. The height is less doing this because you can only climb so high before you're too close to the wall to work. I have this ladder for my home and love it.

      by|Feb 23, 2022

A:  There is a shelf on top to hold items you are working with. The cross configuration allows this ladder to stand securely with less spread at the base compared to typical step ladders. The soft feet and bumper on the back of the shelf improve versatility and stability. Using this ladder for electrical and mechanical tasks for my home build. The top step puts me into the 9' ceiling with a stable base. Great addition!

DANGEROUS! Ladder Collapsed While Working on it
I bought this latter from Home Depot a few months ago after comparing against the other ladders, Werner, etc. And I really like the thick spreader versus the thinner ones from the competition. The ladder felt sturdy even though it was slightly uneven - which I attributed to the fiberglass molding. I have used the ladder about 30 times and it has felt stable and worked well - until yesterday. I was halfway up the ladder and marking a wall to my right. I leaned into the ladder to make a second mark about 3 inches further than the first mark. The ladder just crumbled from under my feet and I fell to the ground. After getting up, I noticed (photos attached) that the spreaders had completely buckled - not sure how that happened. I am less than half the rated weight, and if it collapsed under my weight, I can't imagine how it can be safe for the average American male weight of 197 lbs?!! Reached out to Louisville Ladder and waiting for their response.

Louisville Ladder 6 ft. Fiberglass Cross Step Ladder (10 ft. Reach) with 300 lbs. Load Capacity Type IA Duty Rating review: Wow! This ladder is the perfect height for working outdoors and indoors on your house. I recently used it to string up Christmas lights and it just worked superbly. It is heavy which is a good sign. It unfolds and folds up without too much difficulty. The feet on the ladder are just superb - they grip tight on wood, dirt, grass, all surfaces. There is one unique part in the design also - it has a v neck at the top - this is great when you are working at an angle say on a 4X4 or 6X6 post as it rests perfectly. I just used it tonight to assemble a very tall wedding arch and the wind was blowing. I felt sure-footed as I worked on the next to top step - you feel very safe when using this ladder. I have never had a Louisville ladder but I will be acquiring more - very durable and a very safe footing using the ladder. There ya go!

This is an amazing ladder to have around the house. It's practically multiple ladders in one. You can use it as an A-Frame ladder, or you can lean it against walls, poles, etc. The top has rubber against the side the ladder will be leaning against, as well as the feet of the ladder. The tray up top features a wide variety of uses, such as holding drills, screwdrivers, nuts and bolts, screws. There is a magnet as well. Ladder is very sturdy, solid build with quality components.

I got this ladder to replace an old aluminum one I had, and it’s a huge improvement in my outdoor work process! I love that the straight front leg design lets you face where you want to work without having to turn it sideways to get close enough. My first uses were to clean the gutters and then hang several strings of lights around the house. As an average-strength-gal, this ladder is lightweight enough to easily maneuver up and down deck stairs and around the yard, yet feels very sturdy and stable when you're on it with no wobbles - I love the grippy feet at the bottom. The top of this ladder has little cubbies for everything - holes for your screwdriver, etc, and even a magnetic section. Makes the top of the ladder a really useful feature. I found it easy to fold and unfold when moving it around the house and my feet felt stable on the rungs even after walking on damp grass and then climbing back up and down again. For storage, the ladder has two black clip braces that you can use to ensure the legs remain clipped together - a nice extra feature if you're storing it on its side in the garage like I am. Finally, I can't say color is a reason to buy a ladder, but the bright colors just really look awesome and made me happy while doing yard chores.

I love this step ladder. I don't know if this is a new category of step ladders, but it is specifically designed to lean against the wall in use (see pics) rather than a traditional A frame configuration. We've all done this with our standard step ladders, but they have always been shaky when used this (improper) way. As you can see from their design, the two halves are hinged one step below the top. The top has great grippers that face the wall surface and provide a comfortable and steady feeling when used. There are also clips (see pics) that hold the two halves together in this leaning configuration. The top also has holes and compartments for your tools, screws... as well as a magnetic area ( very cool). The feet are very stable. I like the fiberglass design. Fairly light, but very sturdy. I recommend.

The Louisville 6 ft. Fiberglass Ladder is a very strong ladder which is not too heavy to move around. It is a ladder that can be used open and free standing or you can position it while closed and climb while it is leaning against the wall. It feels comfortable while climbing and standing on it. It is also a perfect height for use outside. I am able to reach the eaves and gutters. I also like the two clips that keep the ladder closed for storage and these clips keep the ladder closed while moving it around or when you are using it in the leaning position. The 300 lb. load capacity is a plus.

This ladder is perfect for around the house. It doesn't weigh a ton and at six feet tall it gives me enough height to reach everywhere inside my house and I am able to reach the gutters to the ground floor on the outside (although I can't see inside them). It has plastic bumpers on the feet and top to protect your walls, and stays folded so you can hang it or carry it easily. The rungs are well braced on both sides and the ladder is steady and well designed for stability. Because of its unique design with the bracing legs set lower, the ladder can sit closer to a wall.

This is a high quality step ladder which is built very well. The strength of the joints is obvious when you open this up, and the stability is impressive. The ladder doubles as a self standing step ladder, then when folded up, it has the rubber bumpers to keep it from scratching walls if used as a leaning ladder. Now a small point but useful item is that the top is shaped so you could put it up against a round object like a pipe and it would be more stable than a ladder which does not have the cut away in it. I like that as my first use for it was to add a pipe fitting on top of a 3 inch PVC vent pipe leaning this ladder against the pipe. It was nicely stable doing that. The magnetic right side on the top is nice for screws or small screw drivers, to hold them in place. Now the one negative about this is that it does not have a paint can shelf like most other step ladders. That reduces substantially the amount of area you can place tools or materials on. But all in all, its a real nice ladder. I do recommend this ladder for general use.

This is a very well designed unique step ladder. It has a ton of features. You can use it as a standard step ladder. Or you can use it as a leaning ladder against a wall if that is what you need. The top step has a lot of really cool features. There are plenty of tool holders, places to put a paint can, a magnet and rubber "feet" to help stabilize it against a wall. It is very sturdy. Extremely well-built. That brings me to the only two things I could find wrong with it. It's very heavy. I know that adds to the sturdiness, but it hurts in portability and use around the average household. Also, the one that I got has slightly uneven bottom feet. It doesn't make it unusable at all it's just a little wobbly at first. I might try to exchange it but I'm not sure yet. I would recommend.
