Product Overview

Coordinating Claro wall plate and accessories sold separately. Let Lutron Maestro CFL/LED Occupancy Sensing Dimmers turn the lights on and off to your favorite level. It's a simple, easy, and low cost way to save energy and add light automation to your home. Install a Maestro Occupancy Sensing Dimmer and lights turn on when you enter the room, and then turn off automatically after you leave. The dimmer works just like a Lutron Maestro dimmer, gradually turning lights on and off, allowing your eyes to adjust to the new light level. Use the rocker to adjust the light level for any activity, or set the preset level to ensure lights always turn on to your desired light level. Equipped with ambient light detection, you can customize your sensing dimmer to detect daylight so lights don't turn on with enough natural light in your room. Keeping the sleek design of the Maestro family, Lutron sensors will match the decor of any room in your home. Install it in the laundry room for added convenience when your hands are full, or in the kids' rooms and never worry about lights being left on by mistake. Maestro Occupancy Sensing dimmers work with any bulb type, including dimmable CFLs and dimmable LEDs. This occupancy sensing dimmer can also be easily programmed to function as a vacancy (manual-on) sensor.
  • Automatically turn lights on and off to favorite dimmed level
  • Provides the best dimming performance for LED bulbs (for list approved LED Bulbs, see "Technical Specifications" below)
  • For use with up to 150-Watt of dimmable LED and up to 600-Watt of incandescent and halogen bulbs
  • Programmable fade gradually turns lights on, allowing your eyes to adjust to the change in light, and gradually fade off, allowing time to exit a room before the lights turn off
  • Uses advanced XCT sensing technology, offering the most reliable on/off performance up to 30 ft.
  • Features programmable time-out of lights - 1, 5, 15, or 30 minutes
  • Installs in as little as 15 minutes

Is there an On-Off Override switch? And does this switch require a ground? The ground I have is to the gem box, and has NOT worked with your other Sensors. I was told that this Sensor does not require a ground.

The MSCL-OP153M is rated to control screw-based or recessed trim LEDs. Lutron cannot guarantee compatibility with LED tube lighting. There are occupancy sensor switches, such as the MS-OPS5M, that would be compatible but lack a dimming feature.

Can this item be use with the Lutron app?

No, this is my main complaint with this switch. It has the dimmer feature, but the lights always come on (via the motion sensor, anyway) at full brightness and instantaneously. Totally defeats the purpose I had for buying this switch.

I have had a few of these switches around the house for a few years and they work great. I use them in closets, hallways, outside sheds and even with a desk light so that lights come on automatically when I enter the room or open a door or set down at my desk and I don't have to flip a switch when I leave. You can never forget to turn off a light. The sensitivity is adjustable and the dimmer works on LED's. LED's do not flicker with this switch. They are easy to wire. Just 2 wires and a ground.

This switch is great but the installation instructions need improvement. I wired it in conjunction with an existing 3-way mechanical switch and had to experiment to get it working correctly. I suppose it'd be okay if I had a switch that was labeled "Terminal 1" as they refer to it, but don't they realize that 3-way switches are produced by several manufacturers who don't necessarily label their product in the same manner? It would have been nice to get a wiring diagram (schematic). It also would be good if you could defeat the dimming feature if you wanted to use it on fluorescent fixtures.

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
Installed this in my daughters house for kitchen lighting. I previously replaced the incandescent lights (track fixtures) with LED bulbs in her kitchen. This unit works as a '3 way switch', or as a simple switch. MSCL-OP153M is rated 600W incandescent or 150W LED. If you don't need the 3 way switch function, a slightly lower cost version of this switch is available. These type of PIR (Passive Infra Red) switches are usually either: Occupancy Mode - Automatically turns on the light, then off if no motion is detected Vacancy Mode - You have to manually turn on the light then it shuts off if no motion is detected This switch works either way, you configure it. Setting / teaching / programming it at what level of ambient light it should turn on is the hardest part. Easiest to do at the ambient light conditions when you want auto activate. The included instruction sheet is sufficient for basic out of the box installation. However I'd recommend downloading the "full guide" (see below) from Lutron for maximum versatility. Ramping in and out the light level, sensitivity, timeout etc. You may need to remove the cover to pull the light disconnect switch, they call it "FASS" in the guide. You need to open (pull forward) this switch to program it. Installing this switch took me under an hour, and I'm not a professional. Most of that time; What breaker controls the power to those lights? Is this a 'simple switch' or part of a '3 way switch' hook up. The switch has 4 connection points: Push in 14AWG solid and standard screw connections (3 points), and the ground. There are multiple ways to wire two (or more) switches to independently control a light. Their web page has a 24 page pdf guide / information here: http://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/048480a.pdf Field of view is near 180° from the face of the sensor. It has manual overrides for PIR functions. That is, it will work as a simple switch, but that defeats the features of a 'smart switch'. Since this is an 'electronic switch' you cannot use an ohm meter to pin it out...you need to read the manual! On initial power up, the switch does a self calibration that may take a minute or two to become functional.

(What's this)
This automatic light is a fantastic solution to a problem area we had in our home: I have a laundry room that leads to a half bath, but the light switch is on the opposite end from where most people enter. I really didn't want to have to run new wiring all the way around the room to install an additional switch, so this was the perfect solution. Now, when anyone opens the door, the light automatically goes on. An additional thing that's nice is that the light doesn't come "blasting" on...it "dims up" so it's not a shock to the eyes. Same when it turns off. The product allows you to set a length of time for the light to stay on (1, 3, 5, or more minutes), and you can also turn it on or off by pressing it if you wanted to. Mine is a smaller area, but other buyers might be interested to know that this switch senses a room up to 900 square feet, which is a pretty large room! It does have settings so you can adjust it as to where it senses the motion from, which we did...we didn't want the laundry room light turning on every time someone walked past it in the living room, and the setting worked fine to prevent that. It was nice that it came with a (very high quality, not your typical cheap plastic) wall plate, however we didn't use it because our switch was on a two switch thing, so we just bought a wall plate that would have held one GFCI and one regular switch, and it fits perfectly. (See photo). Very easy, perfect solution, good quality item!

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
Got my first Maestro dimmers about 17 years ago for my home theater and this is my third addition since then. This unit was just installed in a full bath on the main floor that acts as a powder room. Its a nice addition if you have dirty hands or your hands are full and don't want to or can't touch the wall switch. The main reason for installing it was that this room is an interior room and always needs lights on when in use so why not have the lights come on automatically and people are then less confused by the multiple switches in the wall. Being able to set the time delay for the auto off feature is nice as well. I have it set to 1 minute (the minimum) for now and that will work for my application but it is nice to know that I can adjust it to several other settings. There is a little switch at the very bottom of the unit called the "FASS" that puts the switch in programing mode to allow you to set four different variables: timeout, sensitivity, ambient light sensing and light level memory. Using the FASS and indicator lights to program the unit is well explained in the instruction sheet. Be sure to pay attention to the directions for use of the heat dissipating fins on the sides of the unit. If you have other dimmers in the same wall box you will want to see the instructions for removal of some of the fins. Read the directions carefully since once the fins are removed the wattage rating is permanently lowered (de-rated). This applies to all of the Maestro units I have installed. The removal of a standard dimmer and replacement with this unit took about 15 minutes including finding the proper breaker. Reading about programming the FASS and doing the programming was another 5 minutes or maybe a bit longer. Very nice addition that will now allow me to change the vanity lights to LEDS and I also plan to add a time delay Maestro switch to control the fan in the bathroom in the near future.

I purchase two of these sensor dimmers for the top of the stairs (Front and Basement), then a companion dimmer for the front one which is a two way... They work fairly well but the sensor range is not as advertised... It is supposed to be 30 ft horizontal, 4 ft vertical, yet with the sensor set to highest sensitivity it will not detect anyone coming from the bottom of the stairs until you are on the last step at the top which is right in front of the sensor... Planning to return and purchase another brand...
