does this require a neutral wire to function?
Asked by: Lionel
The MS-OPS2 does not require a neutral connection but it will require a proper ground connection.

Can this control a bathroom light and exhaust fan?

Looking to add this to a bathroom in a common pool area that everyone forgets to turn off. Wondering if it can simply replace the old broken timer we have in there now that controls a fluorescent and exhaust fan? Thanks!
Asked by: dbat
The MS-OPS2 is only rated for 2A of lighting load. Instead, Lutron would suggest the MS-OPS5M which is rated for 5A of lighting load or 3A of combined lighting/fan loads.

Why can't it be used to switch outlets?

What if I want to turn on and off LED lights that plug into outlets? Is this only because someday someone might plug something super load intensive in?
Asked by: EEMO
The MS-OPS2 is rated for 2A of lighting loads only. If it were wired to a receptacle and something higher than 2A was plugged in, the device would be overloaded and most likely malfunction.

Customer Reviews

Maestro Motion Sensor switch, 2-Amp, Single-Pole, White (2-Pack) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 222.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product I originally purchased two of these to install in my home. The price was the lowest I could find even amongst popular online retailers. If your life is anything like mine, you are constantly either kicking yourself (or blaming your wife) for a light left on in a closet or bathroom. I installed the first switch in the closet and it worked flawlessly. Now I just walk in the closet and the lights pop on. About 1 minute later they go off again on their own. Makes me feel like Tony Stark. It works great and the cats do not seem to set it off which is a plus. I put the second switch in the garage which works well for me however it may not work for people who spend lots of time working in the garage. The switch is adjustable so you can set the amount of time before the switch automatically shuts off so that helped me for the extended trips into the garage.

Works great in the laundry room off the garage entrance into the house. Lights automatically go on in the dark house. Love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great, Easy Installation. Very Pleased. I purchased these for the restroom and laundry room of my retail business. But, before purchasing, I read the reviews and was, therefore, prepared for "exceptions" when the light switches arrived (no cover plate, ground wire, etc.). The 180 degree sensor is very effective as it turns the light on just as someone sets one foot in the doorway. I left mine at the default 15 minute setting (before the light turns off), but am considering lowering it to ten minutes. A problem with the another sensor I bought a few years earlier is that, if there's minimal movement (e.g. reading a magazine), the light would go out and you'd have to wave your hand to let it know you're still there. Not so with this sensor. The instructions were accurate (but the print was so small, I needed a magnifying glass) and installation was a breeze. Overall, so far, I am very pleased with this purchase. We'll have to see if they stand the test if time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from If you have and older house read this. The Maestro “auto switch” REQUIRES A GROUND TO OPERATE, in BOLD LETTERING on the accompanying installation instructions. This is not stated in the online product specs. If your installation is pre-60’s check before you buy. Some of the negative reviews may have installed this without a ground connection or did not connect / have a true ground. You will have to purchase your own wall plate as they don’t know what size (1,2,3 gang etc) box you’re installing in. The color of the set I received was white.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what we wanted We placed these motion sensitive light switches in rooms that did not have any windows and that we knew we'd want to turn the light on every time we entered it (walk-in pantry and 2 bathrooms). Great decision! We also put one in a small room (broom closet) that we designated for our cat. The one in this space is connected to an exhaust fan and placed very low on the wall. Everytime the cat enters, the fan comes on to eliminate any odors created. The switch comes on immediately (hands-free) and turns itself off after it senses that the area is no longer occupied - just as described.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these switches I love the fact that they are customizable on how you want them to function, for example I put one in our laundry room that automatically comes on with any motion which is perfect. However, I tried to use another the same way in a main floor bathroom but every time someone walked by the bathroom the light would come on so instead I made it so that you turn the light on manually every time and then it will automatically shut off after X amount of time when there is no motion detected in the room but if there is motion in the room it stays on... I can't say enough good things about this product, just perfect if this fits what your description of what you are looking for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, BEWARE NEUTRAL WIRE REQUIRED Despite what this site may claim, you will need a neutral ground wire to have this product work. I bought three and intended to use one in my basement bathroom. It would have been perfect, but the builder didn't include a ground wire. No wiring solution would allow it to work. I did wire one in our walk-in closet (with overhead 200W of incandescence) and one switch in our garage so far, both work great. Programming is very easy and this product can be used as a push button with a timer, or as an occupancy sensor to power on automatically. Our closet switch has been programmed as occupancy with a one minute timer. You are able to walk into the closet and the light turns on automatically. If you are moving around at all in the closet the light will stay on indefinitely. Walking out of the closet the light will turn off within one minute. The peace of mind that the lights were not left on all day is great, both for bulb life and for electricity usage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I like this product...annoys my kids! My husband had a little trouble trying to program the length of time that the light stays on. I think it still needs a little tweaking as far as the range of motion. It's connected to the light down the hall, but every time I open our bedroom door it goes off. My daughter's don't like it because it's down by their bedrooms and scares them when the light goes on, especially in the middle of the night! We put the second one in the hallway off of the garage and it is set for "daylight" since there is a window right there. It only comes on at night and the range of motion is smaller. It's nice to have a light go on when you walk in the door, especially if you're carrying packages. All in all, I like them. You do; however, need to purchase a switch plate seperately. I just bought generic ones which were much cheaper.
