Is this an acceptable option to cut down and paint as use as a finsh product on my risers on my stairs. I would want to make sure it is durable enough if someone were to kick it while walking up the stairs.

Too late, I already used the 1/2" mdf. It seems to work great!

Is MDF OK for outdoor use?

Asked by: Phil
My homes builder, a premier builder in the area, used MDF panels, fluted, for exterior pillar cosmetic facing. Twenty years ago. The only reason I'm replacing the MDF is because the cedar wood trim started to rot and wicked up some moisture into the MDF but really not too bad, and because the panels are 20 years old. It's cheap so why not replace. The panels were caulked in very well and painted with what appears to be 2 or 3 coats of latex paint. Oh, I live in Seattle. These pillars are exposed to the 8 months of rain here. Plus I didn't know it was MDF and I always hosed them off. So while MDF is not made to be an exterior product, it is my opinion that it certainly can be if sealed properly. I'm using it again same application. It beats the $500 and up fiberglass pillar wraps or the very expensive $100 sheet, $400 minimum, not to brand name bash, so it starts with an Ex and ends with a tira, which I've been told does not finish out well if it's to be fluted or similar.

Is this suitable for a large shelf in a basement store room? We have a 15' square storeroom in the basement that I am converting to a laundry. It is dry (but naturally humid once there's laundry going on.) Our house is on a hill so the room has a11' square floor then a raised area 4' wide around 2 sides of the room. That raised area is covered in really rough flooring boards andI'd want to lay this over the top. What's the best way to seal it before laying it?
Asked by: johnmnz
Thanks for the replies. Based on them I am going ahead with MDF which I will cut and varnish outdoors. I will also not have the bottom edge in contact with the floor in case of a washer overflow (though I suspect that, should the washer overflow, replacing a couple of sheets of MDF will be the least of my problems!)

Can half inch MDF panel be used for speaker enclosure, like two 15 inch speakers & horn for Karaoke?

Asked by: Knyghtwolf
No. Absolutely not. It must be 3/4" or wider for subwoofer enclosures.

I typically use this type of MDF to trim out designs when building headboards, bookcases, chests or many other kinds of painted furniture. If you have a good blade on your table saw and you take your time, you can get a laser straight cut with a perfect edge that looks fantastic when painted. It is easy to shape with a router, and it stays in place well with glue and just some pin nails or brads. One thing to note if you have not painted MDF before is I typically get the best results with an oil based paint. If you want to use a water based paint, I recommend using an oil based primer and then letting it fully dry first. This stuff sands well and you can use it for a wide array of projects. I don't typically use it for anything structural, but depending on the size and weight requirements, you technically could, but I find it is better for just trimming those projects out more than anything else. Very cost effective too.

When purchasing the product, I requested the board be cut in strips and the assistant manager told me "the reason the store sells saws is so these items could be cut at home". I am a loyal customer that visits this store multiple times each week and I spend a lot of money here. There are other stores nearby that will not come at the customer with that type attitude and offer better pricing on many items. Most all the associates I have met in this store have been great but the attitude I was met with when asking to have this board cut was unacceptable. To his credit, he didn't not completely refuse to cut the board as he cut some of what I requested but he was very rude throughout the process.

Used this for making interior window and door jamb extensions. Takes primer/paint pretty well. A little dusty while cutting but that’s to be expected when using MDF.
