Temple-inland ultra stock MDF is valued for its defect-free composition and highly uniform density that allow it to cut, rout, shape and drill cleanly, holding intricate detail with a minimum of waste and tool wear. Panel for panel, it's hard to beat for material efficiency, machining performance and productivity. Ultra stock MDF also finishes beautifully and consistently. Its flat, smooth surface delivers exceptional results whether laminated, direct printed or painted. Sanded with a range of available grits, it performs well even with very thin overlays and dark paint colors. Dimensional stability is another important benefit. Is this an acceptable option to cut down and paint as use as a finsh product on my risers on my stairs. I would want to make sure it is durable enough if someone were to kick it while walking up the stairs.

Too late, I already used the 1/2" mdf. It seems to work great!

Is this suitable for a large shelf in a basement store room? We have a 15' square storeroom in the basement that I am converting to a laundry. It is dry (but naturally humid once there's laundry going on.) Our house is on a hill so the room has a11' square floor then a raised area 4' wide around 2 sides of the room. That raised area is covered in really rough flooring boards andI'd want to lay this over the top. What's the best way to seal it before laying it?
Asked by: johnmnz
Thanks for the replies. Based on them I am going ahead with MDF which I will cut and varnish outdoors. I will also not have the bottom edge in contact with the floor in case of a washer overflow (though I suspect that, should the washer overflow, replacing a couple of sheets of MDF will be the least of my problems!)

Can half inch MDF panel be used for speaker enclosure, like two 15 inch speakers & horn for Karaoke?

Asked by: Knyghtwolf
No. Absolutely not. It must be 3/4" or wider for subwoofer enclosures.

I typically use this type of MDF to trim out designs when building headboards, bookcases, chests or many other kinds of painted furniture. If you have a good blade on your table saw and you take your time, you can get a laser straight cut with a perfect edge that looks fantastic when painted. It is easy to shape with a router, and it stays in place well with glue and just some pin nails or brads. One thing to note if you have not painted MDF before is I typically get the best results with an oil based paint. If you want to use a water based paint, I recommend using an oil based primer and then letting it fully dry first. This stuff sands well and you can use it for a wide array of projects. I don't typically use it for anything structural, but depending on the size and weight requirements, you technically could, but I find it is better for just trimming those projects out more than anything else. Very cost effective too.

The difference is the store did the 5 cuts for me, no charge! This saved me a bunch of time and work. Since my table saw or circular saw are small this would have been extremely hard for me by myself. Not to mention getting it home on or in my vehicle. It took the employee less 5 minutes to do it with the right equipment and would easily fit in my car. Service keeps my your customer.

I purchased this piece of MDF to sit under an appliance during renovation because I could not find a piece of masonite. I was able to get it cut to the correct size, but Home Depot does not have a way to cut a rounded corner and had to take it to another hardware store to get the corners cut.

Was able to make work, had to hide side on inside of project. The should not happen when a full sheet was cut and it came apart on the inside cut of the panel.
