Does cartridge 1248 require the replacement tool?

Moen roman tub fixtures using the 1248 cartridge do not require the 14272 nut removal tool; the stem extension will need to be removed, then needle nose pliers can be used to unthread the nut. You want to make sure the spout shank measures between 1 3/8” to 1 ½” in total height. In addition, the extension under the handle should have vertical splines to adapt to the new handles.
