On my own towel bar the space from wall to the outside of the bar is 2/16 short of 3 inches then add about the same for the ball end of the bracket. Total distance is almost 3 inches

There is a plate that is behind the towel bar that you screw in first. Then the towel bar fits on this plate and a tiny screw secures it to the plate! Brilliant!☺
