The 56WHT Durawall can be trimmed to fit the size needed. Trim the side of the flat panel panel that is covered by the corner panel. Go to www.mustee.com and look up the instruction manual for more detail.

The usable area of the shelves is about 3-1/2 x 9-1/2 but you have to understand that they are not perfect rectangles. There are curves everywhere.

Answer

The corner pieces are 18" along the back with a 2" overlap, making the original center panel width 40". Actual width of the center panel really does not matter because the 72" possible width is the important number. You cut the center panel to adjust to the width you need below 72". If there is drywall in your bathtub alcove, it already comes down over the lip of the tub. This surround attaches to the drywall so at the bottom you simply fill the space with silicone caulk. An attached molding would leak. You need the drywall or other material behind this surround. It is not made to attach to the studs. This from the Home Depot listing page for this item: "•Glue-up, adhesive installation mounts to drywall and similar surfaces"

Can this product withstand the cold temperatures of winter? We need one for our cabin which doesn’t have heat.

Good question; I live in a temperate climate. So research the manufacturer and get feed back. My experience is do not use the recommended adhesive; but cowboy up; I used a loctite adhesive and got good results after the recommended adhesive failed. This time, I would use Liguid Nails, "STICKS TO ANYTHING". Put it on like troweling a tile. Also be careful with calking as it will flex and separate with freezing/thawing, so calk twice a year.

Can this be glued over durock cement board?

The answer below is correct. The back and side panels can be deeply scored with a razor knife and then bent to snap off the unwanted portion.

When installed in a cold climate the product will accept the cold like any fixture. Allow the product to warm up to room temperature before applying hot water to prevent thermo-shock.

This product took a long time receive from the time of order placement, approximately 1 month. It had been at my local store for over 2 weeks before it was available for pickup. When I picked it up, the box was heavily damaged, but there was no visible damage of the surround on first observation. Upon unboxing at home, I found that 2 of the flat panels were broken near the edge. Luckily, these breaks did not affect my ability to install this surround, as I was able to use the 2 broken panels on the sides that required trimming, and I was able to trim away the damage. The only quality defect of the product was in the casting of the shelves, there were slight casting defects visible on the shelves, though they did not detract from the functionality of the product. The panels were easy to cut down to proper size with a straight edge and a good sharp blade, just score and snap. Drilling a hole for the shower spout was also very clean with a good hole saw and the panel clamped between two pieces of wood. Overall, this is a good product, and the finished product looks very nice.

Product installed for an oversize tub (36 x 72). Contractor had no issues with cutting to size. After reading comments related to seeing glue through the walls, i requested the contractor to spread the glue evenly versus just beads, and that worked well, cannot see any glue through the walls. Walls are thin, i do see small imperfections (ex. dimples) in places. Shelves are functional, but thin as well. Color was fine - bright white, matches tub fine.

For the price, the quality of material is very nice and adequate to do a simple remodel of a typical shower/tub setup. We had an old metal framed/glass door shower enclosure on top of our tub which had gotten so gross and mildewed that it was impossible to clean properly. We removed this enclosure and used 4 of the pieces since we had an open back wall. I had to build a custom end cap to finish off the open corner piece which came out nice. We then added a wrap around shower curtain system, aslo from HD (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Barclay-Products-60-in-Corner-Shower-Curtain-Rod-in-Polished-Chrome-4118-60-CP/205689536) Before starting make sure you have a good hole saw kit and a long metal straight edge for scoring the panels to cut with a sharp utility knife. Make sure when gluing the panels to the wall, you apply glue to both the wall and the backside of the panels if you want to eliminate the risk of one of the panels popping off as it did to us. The only caveat to this type of set up which would apply to any 5-piece setup is that the installation is lengthy and tricky to align all the panels. You will need more glue and caulking than you would expect. My recommendation is to only use a 5-piece setup if you don't have the option of installing a 1-piece or 2-piece caulkless shower/tub combo in an alcove-type layout. This however was not possible for us and we're happy with the final result.

Great product for custom size shower enclosures
When it was time to repair tub shower walls in my bathroom, I spent some time looking at quite a few tub surround products that would fit my custom size tub/shower area. I came across the Durawall five piece product, and saw comments that indicated it could be sized to fit. The unit went up without any complications, and was relatively simple to size the pieces to fit just right, easily accommodating the extra length on the side wall. The only slight downside from my perspective is that as I was going for a sheer finish look to the surround, it was somewhat difficult to apply the silicone caulking around the edges of the product such that it adheres well with wear given that the surface of the wall unit is made not to have things stick to it, and the product itself is quite thin. Overall, I'm quite satisifed with the product, and the value.
