Q:Why is this little hose kit so ridiculously expensive? It's almost as much as the Whispa unit itself

Answer This Question

A:  These questions are routed to the product supplier. I can answer technical questions about the product, but I can’t speak to the pricing policies. However, I agree with you that the price seems high. As a plumber I know that flexible connectors that can handle high temperature fluid can get expensive but not this expensive. I will inform Home Depot that I think they should look at this.

Q:Other than the valves, what is the difference in just using stainless steel washing machine supply hoses?

A:  Chris, The part at the end of your response regarding maintenance is exactly my concern. So now that I understand the differences in the hoses discussed, am I correct in assuming that using this particular hose kit would be acceptable in your eyes? Thank you for your very detailed response and time, I appreciate it.

A:  Allow me to rephrase and restate your question so that I can better answer it and help those that might also read this. What are the properties that are critical to a kick space heater hose kit or hydronic heating in general that make them different from conventional potable water plumbing items? First heating water can reach temperatures above 200 F, although it is typically 180 F where as potable water in the US is capped at 120 F. So you are dealing with much hotter water. Second portable water has oxygen in it where as boiler water does not It is what we refer to as dead water, All the oxygen in heating water is removed so that the ferrous metals do not rust. Oxygen has the unique ability to travel through the walls of certain pipe. and enter the heating water. This is called oxygen diffusion. It is why you should never use water pex on heating systems. You need to use heat pex that has an oxygen barrier. It you use material that does not have this barrier oxygen will defuse through the wall of the pipe enter the system and destroy it from the inside out. Most plumbers I know do not use hose kits. They hard pipe them in copper. This essentially guarantees a bigger project down the road when the unit needs to be serviced. Let me explain. At some point the unit may fill with animal fur or the motor may fail etc. If it is hard piped there is typically no way to get at it. The most commonly used solution is to cut the base out of the cabinet to get at it from above. Then put a new cabinet bottom above it. The idea of needing to eventually cut my cabinets to access a mechanical devise never made sense to me as it does not represent good planning. Using an appropriate flexible material for the last few feet makes a lot of sense. When service is required you can then under any restraining hard ware and slide the unit our like a draw. Would I use a washing machine hose. Probably not. I would have to make sure they had the right proprieties. Many seem metal but are actually plastic.

Q:Can this kit be used to install a Smith Environmental KS2006 hydronic heater with 1/2" connections and are the braided hoses better than the Smith Hose kit?

      A:  Simply The Best !!!

A:  We provide The Home Depot with both the Smiths and Myson units; and I have always been disgusted by the high price of the Smiths hose kit. Thus I would do exactly what you are suggesting and there should be no problem.

Expensive. I didn’t like the shut off valves. They had a very small port inside. This would have reduced the flow to the unit by about 75%. So I replaced them with full port valves. I wanted to be sure I got the rated 7000 BTUs. Was the rating with or without the hose kit?

Each of the two hoses had a kink. For the high price, they should be perfect. Returned to Home Depot with no problems. Found other hoses that should work for about a third of the price.

The valves are not full port and it appears to restrict the flow too much. For the price paid I expected more but I was in a hurry. Other options on the market, kits and components, may be a better price / performance option.
