I have the flat window well covers that seem to sustain more weight and cost more but can not be seen. The plastic curved ones do not seem to last as long and breakable and home depot has some you might like that are rectangular.

The cover does not come with any mounting hardware. The consumer needs to purchase screws and anchors that coincide with the material the home is manufactured from. The cover mounts to the house using those screws and anchors.

Answer

Depending on the shape of the well, would depend on the cover we have available. We have the 4425R (44" x 25" x 4" rectangular) Or, the 4425E (44" x 25" x 4" elongated) or the 4822C (48" x 22" x 4" circular)

it says 42 inches but when you look at the description its says 17 inches long. which is it?

Like anything plastic it has a lifespan based on weather and uv exposure. I had some thst lsted about 5 years, i kept them on 2 more years but they were brittle and started to crack and slowly obtain holes. Mine were on south side of house also. They're great at keeping rain out of window wells and critters. If you have brick, "brick clips " (a spring loaded clip usually for hanging pics on fireplaces) work well to attach them. For the price definitely worth it. But like anything else, monitoring the condition is important.

Fit well for my use. I tucked top lip under siding so water would not get behind it as easy. Wasn't very expensive so if it lasts a few years, it is worth it

Lasted until it snowed (they were up one month)
Not able to secure these to your house if you're not eager to drill into your siding... too tall to slip under the siding. We drilled some holes in the base of the cover and staked them into the ground. holding up to the wind so far. Keeps the rain out fine, but...the first snowfall of the year made them buckle and break. Might work better for people who don't get snow.

Impressive flexibility of the plastic is helpful in sealing the edges to the basement window frame with only just a few well-placed screws. The translucency of the plastic is sufficient to observe any weeds that choose to grow in the window well later on. It is a great addition to our home.
