      A:  It will not run off pure DC as the compressor has an AC motor. It may or may not run off an inverter. Most inverters, especially the cheaper ones, do not generate a pure AC signal, they generate what is called a "modified sine wave", which usually does not work well with AC induction motors. It's not to say it wouldn't work, but it's a crapshoot. The better quality solar inverters for whole house are usually sine wave and that would not be a problem.
