Product Details

Makita delivers grinding performance with the 18V LXT Brushless 4-1/2" / 5" Paddle Switch X-LOCK Angle Grinder with AFT, tool only (XAG26Z). The unique feature with this angle grinder is the X-LOCK Technology, which is a quick-change system for tool-free wheel changes. A click-mount and pull release lever make changing wheels easy. The XAG26Z is ideal for grinding and cutting a wide range of materials including tile, concrete, pipe, conduit, and more. It's powered by a Makita-built brushless motor for longer run time, increased power and speed, and longer tool life. The BL Brushless Motor eliminates carbon brushes, enabling the motor to run cooler and more efficiently for longer life. Active Feedback-sensing Technology (AFT) turns the motor off if rotation speed suddenly slows or the wheel is forced to a stop. The XAG26Z also includes a large no lock-on flush-mount paddle switch with two-stage lock-off. In the event that a battery is installed while pulling the paddle switch into the ON position, the anti-restart function prevents the grinder from starting. It's part of Makita's expanding 18V LXT System, the world's largest cordless tool system powered by 18V lithium-ion slide-style batteries. Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger.

A:  The XAG26Z uses x-lock and has an electric brake, so the wheel stops a second after letting go of the paddle switch. The x-lock is a quick, toolless system for changing wheels. The XAG25Z has x-lock but no brake. The XAG04Z has neither.

A:  This 18v cordless grinder has a hand grip switch instead of a thumb switch, and it has the toolless quick change design. This is the most advanced design.

A:  Thank you for your question. The XAG26Z 18V LXT Lithium‑Ion Brushless Cordless 4‑1/2” / 5" Paddle Switch X‑LOCK Angle Grinder was designed to be used with our X-Lock quick change system . Makita does not offer a hook and loop for this tool.

Excellent tool - tool-less change for discs, tool-less guard adjustment and brake make this a pleasure to use. Seems to be made to the same fine quality level as the other brushless Makita tools I have used with good power and battery life. The tool comes with two different guards, the side handle and two discs to get you started. The guards attach by pushing them onto the tool and rotating to the desired position with a latch to hold them in place (see picture). The discs change out by lifting a lever on the tool head to open the X-Lock - you simply push the new disc down onto the lock and it latches into place. In use the tool seems to have plenty of power and the trigger switch is ok even with gloves on. It's a nice safety feature that the disc stops spinning within two seconds of releasing the trigger. I was initially concerned about the availability of X-Lock discs but they seem to be pretty widely available and not too much different in price from the old style though you may have trouble finding some less common types of disc in the X-Lock style. Overall I am very happy with this tool, especially with the freedom it offers after being tethered by a corded angle grinder.

Looks like another quality made product from Makita. Everything looks well-made and designed. It uses the same battery as most of their other tools use. There’s a battery level indicator on the tool also. It comes with a side handle that can be used on either side. Two guards are included, according to what disc that you’re using. They are easily installed, adjusted and removed. The switch is easy to use and comfortable. Operation is smooth and the brake works very quickly. The disc will be stopped before you can lay it down. It’s fast. Now for the X-LOCK. I really like that you can install a disc and when it’s clicked or locked in, it’s locked in. There’s no re-tightening or loosening as you’re working. It’s there and with no tools , nuts or fasteners to keep up with or lose. Some discs are directional and it’s very important that they be installed correctly. Even the best of us can make mistakes, but not with this tool. It will only go on the correct way. Changing discs are quick and easy with the X-LOCK, but my favorite thing is knowing it’s on there and it’s on there correctly. Read and follow the manual, it’s very well laid out and easy to understand.

This is a heavy duty angle grinder that I would categorize in the professional use category, due to the high quality and the many many features it has. The tool weighs 6lb., so it is designed to be used with two hands. The handle on it can be attached on the left side of the grinder or the right, making it easy to do any kind of project. The battery weight, depending on which size you use, helps to balance the unit, being attached at the end of the body. The unit fits in your hands well and works smoothly and is easy to use. Now for the real reason to buy this grinder: It has an extremely well thought out feature called the X-lock. This allows you to change a cut off wheel, wire brush wheel or grinding wheel very very quickly and easily! There are 2 wheel guards with the grinder, one is for use of depressed center wheel, flap disc, wire wheel brush, abrasive cut - off wheel and diamond wheel. The other guard is for grinding and sanding wheels. The guards are easy to change with the use of a moving slide lever. After your guard is on, putting on a wheel is done by pulling up the lever on the top part of the grinder and pushing it on. It is just really That Simple!! To remove, pull up on the same lever and the wheels automatically comes off, no hands, and no wrenches! It is a very well thought out design and looks like it will hold up to heavy use. In conclusion-- this Model # 26Z angle grinder has Such A Wide Variety of Features, that it would be considered the Bently of grinders.! It's really best to look on Home Depot's website and watch the videos... Highly recommend this wonderful tool!!!

Makita adds another game changer! The X-Lock system is fantastic. I love the fact that I no longer have to worry about tightening or worrying about a grinder nut coming loose. Using the X-Lock system is very easy and rest assured is very safe. I took this grinder for a few rounds cutting some rebar to try it out and everything worked perfectly. Holding the grinder was easy and keeping the trigger lever activated while balancing and holding the grinder felt very natural. The only con is that I wish I had gotten this sooner! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I've been slowly transitioning all of my corded tools to battery rechargeable tools, and Makita is one of the best around. Not only are they easier to use not having a cord, they all have great power and run time. This Makita is very well made and well balanced. Fits in the hand well. It takes seconds to transition from a grinding tool to a grinder. The detachable side handle is a nice feature for storage.

If you are reading this review and you are a homeowner handyman shopping for a good quality, well built, sturdy and easy to use Angle Grinder, in my opinion this is a GREAT option and without hesitation, is my suggestion for a homeowner. Take note this does not include a battery or charger (clearly stated as “Tool Only”) this helps keep the tools more reasonably priced if you have enough of those already, I love that. Another solid Makita tool. The first time you pick it up it just naturally fits in your hand without any awkwardness. You can tell it’s a very well made, sturdy and well-balanced tool. With the battery it’s not a heavy tool. The handle can be moved from side to side. Its electric brake stops the wheel in almost instantly, which makes it feel safer. Switching disks is a snap with the new X-LOCK mechanism. Anyone not familiar with X-LOCK should look it up this is a game-changer and IMO is the way to go. Like I heard someone say “if you can pull a beer tab, you’ll be an expert with X-Lock”. Comes with 2 wheels; a grinder and a cut-off as well as 2 guards one open bottom the second is enclosed. The guards are easily adjustable to turn to move its protective area depending on your situation. This also has something they call “Active Feedback-sensing Technology” which after looking into simply turns the motor off if rotation speed senses a binding action, this is another a great safety feature as this is one powerful tool. Hopefully I’ll never test that feature.

Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless 4-1/2 in./5 in. Paddle Switch X-LOCK Angle Grinder with AFT, Tool Only (Model XAG26Z) is a great addition to my cordless tools. I have several other Makita cordless tools and am a believer in their quality and long battery life. This grinder comes with the tool, 1 guard for grinding and a separate guard for cutting. It comes with a detachable side handle and 1 grinding disk and one cutoff disk. The X-LOCK system allows you to pull a lever and quickly change disks with no tools involved. The only downside of this is that you have to use only Makita’s X-LOCK disks. Right now this model is so new that the only disks being sold for this model by Home Depot are for ceramic & granite, and the masonry disks. Keep in mind that this model does not come with a battery or charger.

The Makita XAG26Z, 18V, Cordless Angle Grinder is a durable, versatile tool for tradesmen or a do-it-yourself person. It is perfect for cutting or grinding off excess material at lightning speeds when working away from a power outlet. It's not the lightest cordless angle grinder on the market (5.5+ lbs.), but has a solid ergonomic design that provides a comfortable, secure grip so you won't have to worry about the grinder slipping out of your hands, even when wearing gloves. Makita has incorporated many safety features to protect the operator as well as tool-free grinding/cutting wheel removal via Makita's impressive X-Lock quick-change system. However, this tool requires specialized disks because of this style of attachment. This versatile angle grinder can use either a 4-1/2 inch or 5-inch abrasive wheel or a wire wheel brush attachment. Additionally, a special wheel guard is also included for use with cut-off abrasive wheels only.

This cordless angle grinder seems to have Makita's typically good fit and finish with attention to detail and usability. First impression was that the tool has a nice feel in my hand with the paddle trigger easy to operate - the safety switch can effortlessly be flipped out of the way with a finger while pulling the trigger. Notably, the balance of the tool is great, using a 5 amp hour battery, the grinder is nearly perfectly balanced front to back while holding the grip and it feels about the same weight overall as the corded 4" angle grinders I have. Tool-free guard installation/positioning is a nice feature that uses a simple spring activated slide to index the location of the guard. One of the key features of this model is the X-Lock: a mechanism for quick changes of the disk. This is both a blessing and a curse. First, the good: it is super quick and easy to use - the release lever on the back of the head is easy to operate and large enough to use with gloves on. There is a very positive click that indicates the disk is secured with no discernible play and releases eject the disk for no fuss changes. The bad: It does not appear that this tool can be used with standard arbor disks, so you're tied to Makita's offerings on consumables. Additionally, it does not appear that HD purchasing has caught up with the needs of this tool, so standard abrasive grinding disks and metal cut-off wheels are not showing available even through the website (as of Feb 2021).

This grinder is primarily used as a cutoff tool in our household. The paddle switch is common to many of this style of tool which makes it easy and comfortable to hold when working. The active feedback (AFT) feature will automatically shut the tool down to prevent damage from excess force. The X Lock cutting disk attachment for fast and easy change of the cutter/grinder with fingers only - no wrench required.
